Chapter 166: Soil Preparation

It had been three days since the dragonkin successfully moved in.

As planned, they were currently engaged in land reclamation, working from morning until evening to prepare fields.

As expected of dragonkin, they were all confident in their strength, and the work was progressing very smoothly.

At this pace, soil preparation could begin tomorrow, and planting seedlings the day after.

Having already trained the goblins, I was impressed once again by their quick learning, and so I was teaching them carefully, step by step.

Among the new settlers were also carpenters and a cook, each now working in their respective fields.

Though there was only one cook, I was especially grateful for them. When we hold events, I expect they’ll be able to help out like Norman-san did.

Cooking for dozens of people would surely be hard work, but I hoped the cook would do their best.

“Sato-san, we’ve finished plowing the designated area.”

“That was fast. The plan was to start soil preparation tomorrow, but… shall we begin today instead?”

While I was harvesting, the one who came to report was Drake-san—the leader of this group of settlers.

He was a ruggedly handsome dragonkin man.

All of the new settlers this time were dragonkin, the same race as Ashros-san.

Apparently, pure-blooded dragons like Yato were rare. Aside from Kurikara-san, Tia-san, and Yato-san, only two of Kurikara’s relatives lived on Mount Betelgeuse.

Thus, most of those living around Mount Edelgius were dragonkin, forming the support for the dragonfolk.

It was from Drake-san that I learned this fascinating bit of information.

“If it’s alright, I’d like to start today. Of course, it’s up to you, depending on your own schedule.”

“No problem on my side—let’s begin today.”

“Great! Then I’ll head back first and tell everyone to get ready.”

With that, Drake-san dashed back toward the settlement.

Though it was quite a distance from here, it seemed he could cover it in about five minutes.

Once again amazed by the physical abilities of dragonkin, I wrapped up my harvesting and rode Ash’s wagon to the settlement.

Thanks to Ash, I arrived quickly.

Yet even so, the dragonkin were already fully prepared, waiting eagerly for me.

Their sparkling eyes said everything—they were excited about starting real farming, even without words.

“Sato-san, we’re in your care.”

“““Please teach us.”””

“Likewise—thank you. Well then, let’s begin with soil preparation.”

I led them to where I had prepared composted leaf mold in advance.

By mixing this into the plowed soil, we could create rich, fluffy earth that crops would grow well in.

“Huh? Sato-san, what’s this black soil?”

“This is leaf mold, made by fermenting fallen leaves and rice bran together.”

“Rice bran…? Fermentation…?”

Drake-san tilted his head like a puzzled child, not quite grasping it.

Because fermentation was required, I had made it myself this time, but in the future I planned to have them create it too.

It sounded complicated in words, but in reality the work wasn’t so hard.

Better to try it than explain too much.

“I’ll teach you how to make leaf mold later. For now, don’t think too hard—just mix this black soil into the fields you’ve plowed.”

“Mix soil with soil, huh… That’s an idea we never even considered.”

“Ordinary soil doesn’t have enough nutrients, so the idea is to add enriched soil.”

“I see… That makes sense. As expected of someone recognized by Lord Yato.”

Satisfied, they began mixing right away.

They carried and blended the soil.

It was tough work, but the dragonkin handled it with ease. Watching them, I couldn’t help but admire their strength.

Power really was a versatile, useful ability.

“We’ve finished mixing it into this one plot… Is that good enough?”

“Yes, that’s perfect. This is soil suitable for farming now.”

“Just by touching it, I can tell it’ll grow far better than plain soil. If I were a crop, I’d want to grow in this soil.”

“That’s a unique way of putting it. Anyway, please change all the plowed areas into this rich, fluffy soil.”

“Got it. Thank you for the clear explanation, Mr. Sato.”

“Not at all—let’s grow some delicious crops together.”

That concluded today’s soil preparation lesson.

With the goblins, I had to constantly oversee them, but with Drake-san’s group, they would surely manage on their own.

All that remained was to teach them how to make leaf mold, after which I would hand things over to Sheila-san.

She had been studying farming daily for this purpose, and I was sure she could teach the dragonkin even better than I could.
