Chapter 165: The Settlement

It had been about two weeks since the decision was made for the dragonfolk to relocate.

In that time, under Sid-san’s leadership, houses were built for them, and a settlement where the dragonfolk could live was completed a few kilometers away from the villa.

Sid-san’s employees, who I had mentioned before, also moved over here, and with the dragonfolk carpenters helping in the construction, the settlement was finished ahead of schedule.

Now that everything was ready for them to move in, I sent word to Yato the other day, and soon the dragonfolk who wished to relocate would be coming.

The main goal was to teach them techniques, but otherwise, I planned to let everyone live freely. Still, I was very curious to see how this place would change.

Even as things stood, the fields were expanding, and we were getting closer to one of our goals—a large farm. The fields would only continue to grow.

And once food was no longer an issue at all, I could start thinking about building lodgings.

Where and how to construct them was still a matter to consider, but for now, I thought of turning the back mountain into a monster ranch.

The plains side would be used for expanding farmland, and on the villa side near the main road, I wanted to construct the lodgings.

Of course, once the time came to begin full-scale construction, I intended to go see the king again and properly consult with him before proceeding.

As I was thinking these things over, Sheila came over to me.

“Sato-san. We just received a message from Yato. She says that tomorrow she’ll be sending the dragonfolk who wish to move.”

“Tomorrow? That’s sooner than I expected. I’m excited, but it’s pretty sudden.”

“Perhaps they’ve been eagerly waiting. Will you start teaching them farming right away tomorrow? If so, I’d like to join in too—I’d love to try teaching.”

“It depends on how motivated they are. Personally, I’d like them to take it easy tomorrow. After all, the real work starts with land clearing and soil preparation, which is heavy labor.”

“Ah, I see. So you really will be teaching everything from scratch. I don’t know much about soil preparation, so I guess my role will come a little later.”

“The soil is the most important part. That’s where I’ll begin, and I want to make sure to teach it thoroughly.”

Over the past week, I had gone through my books on agriculture once again.

I was confident I could teach them properly, and I wanted to pass on the knowledge clearly.

And if farming could also be done in the area around Mount Edelgius, I planned to contact Milagros-san and teach the demonfolk agricultural methods as well.

It might be seen as “sending salt to the enemy,” but Milagros had said they were on the verge of starting a war due to food shortages.

Perhaps this could even become a way to prevent war with the demonfolk. At the very least, if it meant improving Milagros’s circumstances, I wanted to help wholeheartedly.

“Sato-san, you really are kind. Most people couldn’t give so much of themselves.”

“I don’t really feel like I’m ‘giving.’ I just want to value human connections, and besides, I’ve been treated kindly by many people myself.”

“That’s because you’re kind to others, so they want to return the favor. Truly, from the bottom of my heart…I’m glad I met you.”

“And I’m glad I met you too, Sheila-san. The road ahead is still long, so please continue supporting me.”

“Of course! I’ll support you to the very end.”

For some reason, Sheila and I ended up exchanging words of gratitude, then laughing sheepishly at each other. After that, we began preparing to welcome the dragonfolk who would arrive tomorrow.

The goal was for them to eventually become fully self-sufficient, but at the beginning we would give them all the support we could.

We carried food out of the storage, and Ash transported it by wagon to the settlement.

One concern was that this might put a heavier burden on Ash for a while.

He had already been invaluable in hauling materials for the construction. It might be worth buying another monster capable of pulling a wagon.

Snowdeer, after all, had been relatively inexpensive. Running a wagon between the villa and the settlement like a shuttle bus could even be interesting.

That would be a decision to make after consulting with Rozzo-san and Sid-san. For now, I focused only on the preparations.

We stocked the food storage that had been built in the settlement and readied the farming tools.

Even though the schedule was suddenly moved up to tomorrow, thanks to everyone’s cooperation, preparations were completed perfectly.

All that was left was to wait for the dragonfolk to arrive. Excited at the thought of gaining new companions, I ended my day.
