Chapter 163: Resolve
The day after serving them food, Milagros-san, Yato-san, and Ashros-san returned home.
In particular, Milagros-san had been deeply moved by the dishes I made, leaving behind countless words of gratitude before departing.
I hadn’t known before, but I’m glad I didn’t choose to turn away just because they were demons. Now, I’ve resolved that if someone is in trouble, I’ll actively help them.
This place isn’t just run by people dragged in from another world—it’s also home to many different kinds of monsters, and even dragonfolk come here to visit. So at this point, looking at someone with prejudice just because they’re a demon makes no sense.
Even among the locals living here, there are plenty of unusual people.
I want to create a place free of discrimination, a place that welcomes everyone except truly evil people.
That’s the vow I made in my heart after this recent incident.
Still, despite such a grand resolution, this place remains basically peaceful and calm.
I braced myself to accept anyone, but a whole week passed without anyone visiting.
The fact that there were zero visitors in a week was a little anticlimactic, but this tranquility is also one of this place’s charms.
Besides, this morning, a small bat-like monster came flying in carrying a letter.
On the letter was written “Milagros.” Just knowing Milagros-san was safe made my spirits soar.
The contents were, once again, words of thanks—too many to count—and a report that they had returned safely.
It seems they’ll report to their family from here on out, and no matter what decision is made, they promised to let me know.
Of course, I want them to be persuaded somehow, but even if we end up enemies, the fact remains that Milagros-san is my friend.
Still… I really, really hope they’ll manage to convince their family.
“Sato-san, may I have a moment?”
While I was rereading the letter over and over and silently sending thoughts to Milagros-san, who had gone back to the Demon Lord’s territory, Sheila-san appeared, looking a little flustered.
I stopped my “telepathy pose” and turned to face her.
“It’s fine. Did something happen?”
“Just now, Yato-san arrived, and she brought dragonfolk with her.”
“A dragonfolk? Someone we don’t know?”
“Yes. It seems they have a request… could you come for a moment?”
“Of course. I’ll go right away.”
What could this be about?
I couldn’t guess, so I had no choice but to hear directly from Yato-san.
I followed Sheila-san quickly and hurried toward where Yato-san was.
The moment I stepped outside, a strange sight unfolded before my eyes.
That strange sight was… several dozen dragonfolk.
I had thought there would only be a few, but I never imagined Yato-san would bring so many along.
“Ah, Sato! Over here!”
“Yato-san, thank you again for last week. But… what’s going on, bringing such a large group?”
“Well, the truth is… I’d like you to take in these dragonfolk here in this village!”
“What!? You mean, all these people want to move here?”
“That’s right! And just so you know, I didn’t force anyone—every single one of them volunteered to come!”
I had braced myself for accepting anyone, but I never expected several dozen immigrants to appear all at once.
And I had no idea why the dragonfolk would want to move here specifically.
“Of course, we’ll accept anyone… but is there some particular reason? It’s hard to imagine why such a large group would suddenly want to move here.”
“Ashros, explain in my place!”
“Understood. There are three reasons. The first is simply admiration for life here. My lady has been spreading the word, and after hearing her stories, these people became captivated and wanted to come.”
I see.
Knowing Yato-san, she probably exaggerated here and there, and that stirred up admiration in them.
“So that’s it. I can just picture Yato-san bragging about this place.”
“Yes, that’s right. The second reason concerns the demons. My lady thinks it would be wise to strengthen this settlement’s fighting force. After considering methods, she concluded that relocating dragonfolk here would be the fastest solution.”
“So Yato-san, you were worried after hearing Milagros-san’s story? Thank you for that.”
“It’s only natural to help friends! Besides, they all came here because they wanted to, so it’s their choice!”
“Even so, I’m really happy.”
“Nufufu. If Sato is happy, then so am I!”
Even if that’s the case, I couldn’t help but smile broadly at Yato-san’s concern.
“Save the flirting until after we finish explaining. The third reason is this: they want to learn your agricultural techniques. From what I’ve seen, aside from the fields you personally manage, Sato-san, the others are ordinary soil, correct?”
“Yes. The ones I manage directly are ‘Skill Fields,’ but the others are just slightly improved regular soil.”
“I thought so. The soil doesn’t seem very different from that around Mount Edelgius. So, if they learn your techniques, they might be able to create farmland near Mount Edelgius as well.”
I see.
Since it’s a mountainous area, it might be tricky to replicate exactly, but with the right effort, farming should be possible.
I’ve bought plenty of farming books, and if sharing my knowledge helps the dragonfolk prosper, that makes me happy too.
That said, part of me worries—if they succeed in cultivating farmland near Mount Edelgius, maybe Yato-san and Ashros-san won’t come visit as often anymore.
