Chapter 161: The Demonfolk

After eating, it seemed she had grown sleepy again, and drifted off once more.

The blue-skinned woman woke up at night, just as I was returning from my bath. She came down from the second floor.

“Good morning. How are you feeling?”

“Mhm. Thanks to you, I’ve completely recovered. … Once again, really, thank you.”

“No, it’s fine, you don’t need to worry about it. I’m glad you’re better.”

It seemed like she might have circumstances she couldn’t talk about, and I hadn’t intended to pry… but the blue-haired woman sat down on a chair in the living room and gestured for me to sit as well.

“My name is Milagros. What’s yours?”

“I’m Sato. Was it alright to tell me your name?”

“Mhm. You saved my life, and after eating such delicious food, there’s no way I could keep quiet. If there’s anything you want to know, ask me. I’ll answer everything.”

She had been so wary before, yet now she told me to ask anything. I was happy she opened up, but honestly, there’s only so much I can even ask.

I don’t know much about this world. If Sheila were here, she would have come up with good questions, but right now she’s off playing games in the recreation room. And besides, Milagros might not talk so freely if Sheila were around.

In short, I had to come up with my own questions.

“Um… then, is it alright if I ask what you are? You’re not… human, are you?”

“I knew you didn’t know. … I’m of the Demonfolk. You probably guessed already, but yes, I’m a demon. Do you regret saving me?”

“No, I don’t regret it at all. Are demons and humans on bad terms?”

“…Huh? …Haha, you really don’t know anything. No wonder you went and saved me. Sato-san, at least you know about the Demon King, right?”

Revealing that she was Demonfolk seemed to be a huge confession for Milagros, but in my ignorance I didn’t really grasp the weight of it. Still, even I know about the Demon King. After all, I was dragged into the Hero Summoning meant to defeat him.

“Yes. I do know. He’s the one fighting against humanity, right?”

“Exactly. And the Demon King is also Demonfolk.”

“What!? Then… does that mean you’re one of the Demon King’s subordinates?”

“I wouldn’t say I’m his subordinate. For now, it’s only that we’re of the same race.”

“Ah, I see… that’s a relief. I know someone who’s aiming to defeat the Demon King, and if you were his subordinate, it would have been… awkward.”

I truly felt relieved.

It seems Milagros isn’t one of the Demon King’s underlings, but she easily could have been.

It made me realize how complicated things can get if you don’t carefully consider who you help. …But honestly, even if she were under the Demon King, and I knew that at the time, I think I still would have helped her.

Aside from her blue skin and horns, she’s just like any other human being. That’s a difficult problem.

“Mhm. But… I might still end up joining him. I came from the Demon King’s territory, and I traveled into human lands to decide whether or not to serve under him.”

“I see… So you’re someone who has influence over others?”

“No, not me. My father is the head of our town. My older brother and sister are pro–Demon King. My father and I are against joining him. So I came here to investigate before we make a decision.”

“And after investigating, did you decide to side with him?”

“Mmm… The plan was, if the Dragonfolk joined the Demon King, then we would too. If they didn’t, then we wouldn’t. But we couldn’t get an audience with them. Worse, we ended up being chased away, and I barely escaped with my life… only to collapse in the place where you found me.”

So that’s why she had collapsed behind the mountain.

…Wait a second.

The Dragonfolk she wanted to meet—could it be Yato and Kurikara? If so, maybe I could act as a bridge.

“Um… the place you went, was it Mount Edelgius?”

“Mhm. So you know where the Dragonfolk live too, Sato-san?”

“No, I didn’t know from knowledge. It’s just that some Dragonfolk who live there happen to be acquaintances of mine.”

“What? You know Dragonfolk?”

“Yes. I’m closest with someone named Yato, and I’ve also met her father, Kurikara-san.”

“Huh, that’s unexpected. No wonder you didn’t seem too shocked seeing me. …Wait. Did you just say Kurikara?”

She had been surprised enough just that I knew Dragonfolk, but when she realized I’d mentioned Kurikara, her eyes and mouth opened wide in shock—an almost cute expression.

“Yes. I know Kurikara-san.”

“You mean the Dragon King Kurikara?”

“I think so, yes.”

“Amazing! I’m so sorry for thinking you were weird or suspicious before!”

“Eh!? Y-you thought that!? W-well… should I speak to Kurikara-san on your behalf? If you stay here a little longer, I think I can arrange for you to meet him.”

“Really? Please, I would be so grateful. Sato-san, I truly owe you everything.”

Milagros kept bowing her head to me over and over.

But I only know Kurikara by sheer chance, and I’m really not anyone special. I wish she wouldn’t lower her head like that.

Still, it makes me happy that I could help her. Given my closeness to Yato, I don’t think the Dragonfolk would side with the Demon King. And if that’s the case, I’m sure we can build a good relationship with Milagros.
