Chapter 134: Campfire
I had been fired up, thinking “Let’s work hard to develop this place even more!”, but autumn will be over in just about a month.
It’s frustrating to finally be motivated, only for the winter season to come and get in the way. But I can’t control the seasons, so I just have to accept it.
I had spent NP (Nature Points) on the goblin team, but I’ve managed to steadily save up again in the meantime. My current NP is 57,470, and it looks like I’ll be able to save another 30,000 NP before winter, so I’m not too worried about running out.
Helena, as well as the goblin team, have made a huge difference. Compared to last spring, the NP acquisition rate is on a whole different level.
Thanks to Ash and the carriage, even trading regular crops goes smoothly now. I’ve also saved up a fair amount of local currency too.
Granted, most of that local currency will probably go into building a bathhouse, but still—being able to earn a steady income is a big deal.
This winter’s goal is to earn a bunch of money from dungeon crawling and have Rozzo and Sid build some useful tools with it.
Compared to last year, we’ve got way more people who can join dungeon expeditions. I’m expecting we’ll make much more money this time around.
Ideally, I’d love to form balanced teams and have them compete to see who can get furthest into the dungeon. But unlike mock battles with wooden weapons, dungeons are actually dangerous.
Pushing yourself too hard just to win could lead to serious injuries—or even death—so I’m not planning to turn it into a competition.
Still, it’s best to form teams early. I thought I might as well make a small event out of it.
So—I decided to hold a baked sweet potato party using the freshly harvested satsuma sweet potatoes while we sort out the dungeon teams.
As always, I asked Rozzo and Sid to build a big campfire.
I used NP to buy aluminum foil, wrapped the sweet potatoes in it, and tossed them into the fire. Now, it’s just a matter of waiting.
Compared to previous events like the flowing noodles or fireworks, this one’s a bit simpler. But there’s something incredibly calming about watching a big fire burn.
It reminded me of my old corporate days, when I had trouble sleeping and would watch fire videos on YouTube. Sitting here warms both my body and my heart.
“I thought it would just be burning stuff, but I actually really like this. The crackling sound is so soothing.”
“Same here. I’m surprised how much I’m enjoying it. It’s obvious, but fire’s warmth really heals the body and soul.”
“Satou and Sheila are weird! I’m disappointed! I was hoping for something like those flowing noodles I missed in summer!”
“I agree with Yato. Master might be weird for being comforted by fire.”
“I actually like it. It’s so relaxing I could fall asleep right here.”
“Me too! I could watch it forever!”
“Really!? I don’t get it. After all that effort, it just feels kinda meh.”
“Yeah, I gotta admit I’m a bit underwhelmed. Still, I am looking forward to these baked potatoes.”
Everyone started sharing their thoughts—and the reactions were all over the place.
I get why Rozzo, who works with fire all the time, wouldn’t think much of it, but I still find it really nice.
Lime and Mash weren’t even paying attention to the fire, and Helena and Yato didn’t seem very interested either. It might be that monster-type races aren’t drawn to fire.
Sid also has a bit of a monster-like side, so that kind of lines up.
“Hey, Satou-san. You were thinking something rude just now, weren’t you?”
“No, no! Of course not! I was just thinking about how to form the teams!”
“You sure? You had that ‘I’m totally judging you’ look in your eyes.”
Sid’s surprisingly sharp for someone with that personality, and I broke into a cold sweat. But I managed to deflect it.
Besides, it is true that the main point of this gathering is to decide on dungeon parties and enjoy baked potatoes—so technically, I wasn’t lying.
“What do you mean by party selection? Are we doing something?”
“We’re organizing teams to tackle the dungeon. During winter, we can’t grow crops, so we go dungeon diving instead.”
“W-Whaaaat!? I didn’t know that! Then… does that mean no one will be here if I visit in winter?”
“Some people will stay behind, but most of us will probably be in the dungeon.”
“Then I’ll go to the dungeon too! Count me in for this party selection thing!”
That sudden declaration came from Yato.
A bit unsure, I looked to Ashros for help… but…
“If it’s for dungeon exploration, I think both Lord and Lady will approve.”
“If I call it ‘training,’ I can go!”
Well, with that kind of approval, I had no reason to refuse.
So, Yato will join us in the dungeon, with Ashros accompanying her, of course. I’ll go ahead and include the Yato–Ashros duo when forming the dungeon expedition teams.
