Chapter 125: Work Performance

Starting with the cheaper goblins, I managed to make six of them into familiars with 10,000 NP.
Being able to get six familiars for just 10,000 NP—only goblins could make that possible.

As for the actual costs: Goblin Worker, Goblin Rookie, Goblin Traveler, and Goblin Porter were each 1,000 NP.
Goblin Fighter and Goblin Warrior cost 3,000 NP each.

There are many other goblins in the 3,000 NP range, and depending on how well the six new goblins plus Shirei and Villager perform, investing more NP into expanding the goblin squad seems like a good option.
As for their appearances, like Shirei, they just wear distinct outfits, but otherwise look the same as regular goblins.

Since the names are hard to remember, I decided to just reuse their species names—Worker, Rookie, and so on.

“Well then, Shirei. I’ll first focus on teaching you how to harvest. Once you’ve got it down, please teach the Villagers.”

“Uga!”

And with that, I began instructing Shirei.
By teaching slowly and carefully, he was able to learn properly, but even for Shirei—who’s likely the smartest among the goblins—his learning speed was only slightly better than Yato’s.

Considering that Shirei will now have to teach the Villagers, I can already foresee that it’ll take a while before they become a reliable workforce.
Resolved to take the long view, I completed the harvest training with Shirei.

“Sato-san, it seems like Shirei can handle work. But do you think the Villagers will be able to learn the job?”

“Well… We won’t know until we try. But even if they can’t do it, I’m not too worried.”

Villagers only cost 500 NP.
Even if they couldn’t work, I wouldn’t be upset. If farming doesn’t suit them, I’ll just find them something else they can do.

Ideally, the 3,000 NP Fighter and Warrior goblins will learn to work, but if that doesn’t work out either, I’ll just find a different use for the goblin squad.
Without setting expectations too high, I decided to observe them for a few days.

About a week has passed since I purchased the goblin squad.
Helena has been working hard, and after some lessons from me and Sheila, her cooking skills have improved a lot.

Surprisingly, she also showed a natural talent for games. She’s already reached a level where she can rival Sheila, despite the latter being more experienced.
Every night now, Helena and Sheila face off in a fierce Smash Bros. match—it’s become a daily routine.

“Ugh, I’m so frustrated! I almost won, but I just can’t beat Sheila-san!”

“Helena-san, are you still hung up on last night’s match?”

“I may not look like it, but I hate losing—so yes, I’m still stuck on it! Um… if Master is okay with it, could you coach me tonight—?”

“Helena, no sneaky moves! If you’re getting coaching, then I’m joining too!”

“Kuh—Sheila-san, I didn’t notice you there…”

“Hehe, I’ve been here all along.”

Although their relationship grew through cooking, the two of them are now fierce gaming rivals.
But it’s not like they dislike each other—it’s actually nice to have a rival so close at hand for some fun competition.

“Oh, that’s right. Shirei just came to the villa and said he finished the training. He asked if you’d come take a look.”

“Really? It took some time, but hearing it’s done is great news.”

“Yes! If the goblins can now contribute, things will become much easier!”

Even though it took a full week just to teach them harvesting, if they’ve really learned it, that’s a huge win.
Before starting other farm work, I decided to go check on the goblin squad’s progress.

“Shirei, is it true the team can now harvest crops?”

“Uga! Ugaga!”

As if to say, Just watch, Shirei barked some commands, and the goblins began harvesting.

It looked like he had assigned roles: the Fighter, Warrior, Worker, Rookie, and Traveler were in charge of harvesting.
Meanwhile, the Villager and Porter goblins handled transporting the crops.

Since Porters are naturally good at carrying things, and the Villagers could manage simple transport tasks, the workflow was running very smoothly.
Shirei kept a close eye on the details, issuing precise instructions whenever he spotted something amiss.

“Shirei, you’re amazing! This is going even better than I imagined. Thank you all for learning the work!”

“Ugaga!”

“Ugaa! Uggagga!”

“Uga! Ugaga!”

I couldn’t understand what they were saying, but each goblin responded warmly to my words of thanks.
Thanks to anime, manga, and novels, I’d always had a negative image of goblins, but seeing them like this, they’re actually quite charming.

They’re living in houses that Sid-san built over the summer, and they bathe every night, so they’re clean and don’t give off that typical “dirty goblin” vibe.
Given Shirei’s workload, I don’t think I can add any more goblins to this unit… but I’d still call this a huge success.

“Keep up the great work. I’ll prepare rewards depending on your performance.”

“Uga!”

After Shirei saluted, I saluted back and left the goblin unit behind.
Their productivity is impressive—hard to believe I only spent 25,000 NP. This experiment turned out to be a real win.

As I considered what kind of rewards to give Shirei and the others, I decided to redouble my own efforts so I wouldn’t fall behind.
