Chapter 123: Helena

The day after Helena became my contracted familiar.

She woke up earlier than anyone and prepared breakfast for Sheila and me.

She looked great in an apron—adorably cute, in fact.

Maybe that thought showed on my face, because Sheila gave me a cold, side-eyed glare as we sat down to eat breakfast.

“Thank you for making breakfast. Do you know how to cook?”

“Yes, Master. High Sylphs eat meals just like humans, so I can prepare simple dishes.”

“It doesn’t smell bad, at least.”

Her response made me wonder how exactly the contract with me turned her into a servant familiar, but for now, breakfast took priority.

A strangely shaped omelet and slightly burnt bacon.

Compared to the meals Sheila and I usually made, it looked a bit rough, but it didn’t seem inedible.

It smelled good too. If it weren’t for the ingredients of this world, it might have actually turned out delicious.

“Well then, let’s eat.”

“Please, enjoy!”

After our usual pre-meal greeting, I eagerly took a bite—but…

Despite how it looked and smelled… it tasted terrible.

“Ah—no good. This is not tasty at all!”

“What!? …Munch munch. I think it tastes fine… Sheila, maybe your taste buds are the problem?”

Helena frowned slightly and responded with a pout to Sheila, who had bluntly called it bad.

The two of them turned to me simultaneously, waiting for my opinion.

“W-Well, I guess it’s not completely inedible…”

“Gaaah…! So my cooking really was bad!?”

I tried to soften the blow as much as I could, but Helena still looked shocked.

It’s a bit unfair to compare her to Sheila, who’s always loved cooking and was skilled even before meeting me, or to myself, who lived alone in Japan and had years of experience. But the truth is… her cooking really wasn’t on par.

“From tomorrow on, Sato and I will resume making meals as before. Helena, please stick to eating.”

“D-Does this mean I’m already out of the lineup!? P-Please! Could I at least have one more chance?”

“Helena seems eager, so how about we teach her how to cook? If that’s okay with you, Sheila.”

“Hmph, I don’t mind. But I’m a bit strict when it comes to cooking, just so you know.”

“Master, Sheila! Please teach me!”

And so, we decided to start teaching Helena how to cook starting tomorrow.

She gave off the vibe of a beautiful, capable older sister, but that image was already beginning to crumble.

Even if she ends up being the kind who seems like she can do anything but can’t actually do anything, that gap can be charming too. As long as it’s fun, that’s all that matters.

Besides, things had been a bit tense between Sheila and Helena yesterday. If cooking together helps them get along, that would make me happy.

With those thoughts in mind, we ate our not-so-great breakfast and headed out to the fields, where I taught Helena the day’s work while we farmed.

—After work.

After that underwhelming breakfast, I was worried Helena might not be much help—but she performed admirably in the fields.

As a High Sylph, she could not only control the four elemental magics like Moji, but also use light and dark magic.

Light and dark magic didn’t seem particularly useful for farming, but in dungeon exploration, she might be able to rival Sheila’s performance.

And unlike Moji’s drawback of having a low magic power pool, Helena had no such issues. With both Moji and Helena, we were able to water all our existing fields and still had energy left for tilling and soil work.

Our own workload had essentially been reduced to just sowing seeds and harvesting. Thanks to our contracted beasts, the labor had been significantly reduced.

Now I was starting to think—maybe it’s time to create a third field.

Currently, we have:

One skill-focused field for crops that restore NP.

One field for Japanese crops for personal consumption and crops from this world to sell for money.

So maybe I could split the latter into two:

One for food crops.

One for crops meant purely for profit.

Helena just helped reduce our workload, and here I was thinking about increasing it again… But I had a plan.

That plan was—buying a large number of cheap contracted monsters.

So far, I’d prioritized quality over quantity. But going forward, I wanted to buy a bunch of lower-tier beasts who could handle sowing and harvesting.

If I can entrust the third field to those creatures, everything should run smoothly.

So, even though I just contracted Helena yesterday… I think I’m going to purchase a new monster.
