Chapter 111: The Girl on the Brink of Death
Starting the next day, the leisure room saw a sudden surge in activity. Portia and Lois joined in on the games, and I recommended manga to Rozzo and Sid. Ever since we enriched our entertainment options, both Sheila and I were noticeably more motivated, and seeing Portia and Lois — who had been reluctant to speak much until now — smiling and enjoying themselves was truly heartwarming.
With that momentum, I felt like working hard in the fields again, but… something was off. My body felt unusually heavy. Sheila seemed to notice changes in her own condition too.
“…Sheila, have you noticed any heaviness in your body lately?”
“Yes. Wait… don’t tell me you’re feeling it too, Satou?”
“It’s not so much heavy as it is… I just don’t feel at 100%.”
“Same here. I had a hunch, but it’s been like this since Lua left, hasn’t it?”
“I think so. Ever since she arrived, I felt lighter somehow.”
If Sheila felt the same, it likely meant Lua had some kind of ability that enhanced those around her. The effect was noticeable even in everyday life, so in battle, it must be extremely significant.
Joel and Brittany once said that Lua could match Sheila’s strength as an adventurer — this must have been what they meant.
While I was glad Lua was putting her abilities to use, I also selfishly wished she’d come back soon.
As I was reflecting on how impactful and helpful Lua had been, Crow suddenly swooped down to us with great urgency. I was startled — Crow never came down unless I signaled him to do so.
“Crow, what’s wrong? Did you find something… huh? What’s that you’re carrying?”
Crow had something in his beak. At first I thought it was an object, but then… it moved slightly.
“Satou, I think it’s alive. If it were a threat, Crow would’ve dispatched it without a word. So maybe he brought back something non-hostile?”
“We’ll have to take a look. Sheila, could you fetch a magic orb from the villa?”
“You mean a 【Heal】 orb, right? I’ll get it right away.”
I didn’t know what Crow was holding, but the fact it barely moved while being carried told me it was in critical condition. I had Sheila go retrieve the healing orb we recently bought, while I checked on what exactly Crow had brought back.
“Crow, can you set it down gently over there?”
Following my instruction, Crow softly placed the figure on the ground.
As I rushed over to check, I saw… a young girl, likely around Joel’s age.
She had no visible external injuries, but her shallow breathing made it clear she was in serious condition.
I immediately placed her in a recovery position and called out loudly. Since her heart was still beating, CPR wasn’t necessary. Her body twitched slightly in response, but she didn’t wake up.
“Satou, I’ve got the orb!”
“Thanks. I’ll use it right away.”
The moment I received the orb from Sheila, I rubbed it to activate the magic and cast 【Heal】 on the unconscious girl.
A green aura wrapped around her, and her strained, shallow breathing began to stabilize. I’d bought the healing orb out of curiosity, but I was truly glad I had it now.
“Ah, she opened her eyes! It’s a girl… right?”
“I think so, but she doesn’t seem like an ordinary girl.”
When I had placed her in the recovery position earlier, I’d noticed small horns protruding from her head. She seemed to be a demi-human of some kind, though I couldn’t tell which species.
“Can you hear me? Does anything hurt?”
“…Hmm? Who are you? Also… where am I?”
She spoke… with an old-fashioned, haughty tone.
Caught off guard by her archaic speech, I explained the situation as clearly as I could.
“My familiar found you passed out and brought you here. You’re not suffering from memory loss, are you?”
“My memory is fine. My name is Yato.”
“So your name is Yato. Did you come from the royal capital? Or from the city of Lanzore?”
“Hmm? Never heard of either place! I came from Mount Edelgius — I am a dragon!”
“…Huh?”
I offered her a place to rest at my home and said we’d search for her parents, but she reacted with disbelief.
“You don’t believe me, do you!?”
Honestly, I’d assumed her memories were scrambled from her ordeal. But then I noticed Sheila beside me opening and closing her mouth in stunned silence, signaling something with wide eyes.
Even I caught on — Sheila, who’s always calm, was visibly panicked.
“…Wait. Are you seriously a dragon?”
“I just told you I am! I do not lie!”
Sheila vigorously nodded, affirming that Yato was telling the truth.
My 【Otherworld Farming】 skill had hinted that dragon-types could be familiars, so I knew dragons existed here. But still — this girl looked entirely human, except for the horns. The disconnect between her appearance and what I expected from a “dragon” made it hard to process.
“Sorry, it’s just… you look completely human. Are you maybe a dragonkin or something?”
“I am no dragonkin — I am a dragon! I’ve just taken on a temporary human form!”
“So you transformed into a human. That makes sense. Still, do you remember why you passed out?”
“That… I can’t recall.”
Just moments ago, Yato had been proudly speaking with her chest out. Now she turned away and curled up, clearly pouting and trying to dodge the question.
“Are you sure? If you do remember, please tell me.”
“I said I don’t remember—”
Before she could finish, her stomach let out a loud growl.
At first, she tried to deny it was hers, but her ears turned red, then her entire face blushed. The sound was too loud to cover up, and it was clear she realized she couldn’t talk her way out of it.
