Chapter 104: New Residents

It’s been about three weeks since our trip to the town of Lanzole.

With the creation of the carriage and making Ash my familiar, these past three weeks may have been the most intense I’ve ever experienced.

First off… we’ve had three new residents move in.

One of them is George-san, a friend of Sid-san who used to work in a sake brewery.

He’s a 62-year-old grandpa who loves alcohol and moved here thanks to Sid-san’s invitation.

You can’t really tell by looking at him, but it seems he has beastfolk blood in him—his grandmother on his mother’s side was a quarter dog-beastkin.

Now that it’s been pointed out, he does look a bit hairy for a 62-year-old, but he doesn’t have ears or a tail, so he just comes off as a regular old man.

Like Rozzo-san and the others, George-san doesn’t do farm work—he just keeps making alcohol. There was a brewery building we’d built that hadn’t been used, so having him come was incredibly helpful. Now we can enjoy a drink every night without worry.

And the remaining new residents? Surprisingly, it’s Brittany-san and Joel!

Apparently, both of them were so moved by the otherworldly food I served that they decided to move here.

Brittany-san had originally worked solo as an adventurer, and upon hearing that  Rozzo and Sid had moved here, she decided on a whim to relocate her base to our village.

As for Joel… shockingly, he quit the Royal Knight Order and moved here.

I think I mentioned this before, but Joel was an exceptional talent who joined the Royal Knight Order as the youngest in its history.

He said he was struggling to grow recently, but he’s only 13—his prime is still ahead of him.

Donny-san had high hopes for him, bringing him to that mock battle tournament filled with seasoned warriors. Yet after eating the food there, Joel decided to quit the Order. Donny-san complained to me, and I did try to convince Joel to go back, but he simply said, “I’ve already resigned, and my mind’s made up!” So, I gave up trying to talk him out of it.

We’d just recently met a woman in Lanzole who graduated top of her class from the magic academy but chose to run a magic tool shop instead. And on the way home, Sheila and I talked about how living happily is what matters most.

So honestly, I think it’s fine.

If this is the path Joel chose, I don’t want to force him back into the Knight Order.

Those who come are welcome, and those who leave aren’t chased. That’s the principle I’ve decided to live by. Joel still has a long life ahead of him—if he ever wants to return to the Order, I’ll gladly see him off then.

Also, the fact that Brittany-san moved in at the same time likely played a big role for Joel.

Brittany-san said she’s not retiring as an adventurer; she just changed her home base and plans to continue taking quests.

If the timing works out, Joel can accompany her on requests. After work, he can train with Sheila or Lua-san.

With Lime, Mash, and Thread also around, he’ll never lack sparring partners. Honestly, I think there’s a good chance he’ll grow stronger here than if he’d stayed in the Royal Knight Order.

…Anyway, that’s the update on our new residents.

Since building the carriage, people have been coming and going more frequently, making the village livelier.

We haven’t only added new residents—there’ve been new buildings too.

Thanks to the carriage making it possible to transport materials, Rozzo and Sid have been constructing buildings left and right.

They’ve already built two new houses, a large storage shed, and an empty house right next to the villa.

Including the villa where Sheila and I live, there are now a total of four houses.

One is for Lua and her group. Another is shared by Sid, Rozzo, and George.

The remaining two are currently occupied by Brittany and Joel.

The storage shed contains all sorts of things: handy tools brought by Velvet-san,  Rozzo-san and Sid-san’s work tools, wooden weapons for mock battles, and the weapons and armor of Brittany, Joel, Sheila, and Lua.

The empty house next to our villa hasn’t been used for anything yet.

I didn’t really have a plan for it, but the other day I decided to make it a general entertainment building.

For now, we only have manga, but we do have a solar generator, so I think it’s about time to purchase video game consoles.

As a modern person, I’d really love a PC—but there’s no internet here, so it wouldn’t be much use.

I wish I could use NP to bring in the internet, but even that seems impossible.

Right now, the plan is to get a video game console, a monitor, a DVD player, and a projector.

Since Rozzo and Sid enjoyed it before, I’m quietly planning to buy a DVD player and a projector to build a mini movie theater.

Residents will get in for free.

Visitors from outside will have to pay, which could provide us with non-farming income.

I have all these plans brewing, but the biggest issue is still NP.

Our fields have expanded, and Moji’s magic has helped speed up the work, but there’s still a daily limit on how much NP I can collect.

Maybe it’s time to stop spending NP on new familiars and start investing it into buildings and entertainment.
