Chapter 201: An Unexpected Side

Fries, the so-called Sword Saint, lifted the brim of his hat with one hand, flashing a confident smile.

The one thing that stood out to me, though, was that even Sheila didn’t seem to recognize him.

“Excuse me, I’m afraid I don’t know who you are… Sheila, do you?”

“I’ve heard the Empire has a system like that, and that there is a Sword Saint. But whether this person is truly him, I can’t say.”

“Well now… that’s a little disappointing. I thought I was well-known even outside my own country. Guess I got a bit full of myself—how embarrassing.”

Fries went from smug to sheepish in an instant, scratching his head in genuine embarrassment.
Judging by that reaction, I didn’t think he was faking the title.

“I see. Just so you know, I wasn’t doubting you. I only recently came here from another world, and Sheila has spent most of her life working in the royal castle, so she isn’t very familiar with other nations.”

“Ohh, that explains it! No wonder this village felt so unusual. Even monsters are working here like it’s normal. The rumors were a bit exaggerated, but meeting a summoned hero makes it worth the trip.”

“Ah, no, I’m not a hero. The hero is someone else—I just got dragged along by accident.”

When I explained that, Fries’s face fell again, looking a little disappointed.
He’d been getting let down repeatedly since arriving, and it made me feel kind of bad for him.
…Though, honestly, none of that was really my fault.

“I see. I thought I might spar with the hero, but now it makes sense—there’s not even a trace of power coming from you.”

“…Hmph. There’s something very rude about how you phrase things. If you’re so desperate for a fight, I’ll be your opponent. I’ll defeat you with everything I’ve got.”

“Haha, no, no. I haven’t sunk so low that I’d raise my sword against a lady. I didn’t realize I was being impolite, but if I offended you, then I apologize.”

He took off his hat and bowed deeply.
To most people, it would have seemed like a gentlemanly gesture—but Sheila clearly wasn’t impressed, glaring daggers at him.

“Oh, no need to apologize! So, are you heading back to the Empire now?”

“Not quite. I’ll stop by the royal capital before returning. I have an old friend there, and I’d like to learn the truth behind the rumors I heard.”

“I see. Then please travel safely. If you need directions to the capital, I can send someone to guide you.”

“Appreciate it, but I know the way. Sorry for intruding on your work.”

“Not at all. I hope we meet again someday.”

“Likewise. If we cross paths again, let’s get along.”

Fries put his hat back on, waved casually, and started walking toward the royal capital.
As his figure disappeared down the road, Sheila stuck out her tongue in his direction.

“He was suspicious, sure, but still… to think he was actually the Sword Saint. That’s amazing.”

“I’m not convinced that story’s true.”

“You really don’t like him, huh, Sheila? Was it his attitude?”

“That, and… he was radiating killing intent since morning. Crow and Lime were both tense because of it. And, of course, so was I!”

Ah, so that’s what it was.
That explains why Crow kept flying around and why Lime—who usually naps all day—was sitting alert in the middle of the field.

I’d only thought of Fries as “a little suspicious,” but for people as strong as Sheila and the others, it must’ve felt like constant pressure.

And then, for him to act all gentlemanly on top of that? Yeah… I can see why Sheila lost her temper.

“I didn’t notice at all. That’s impressive, Sheila—you could sense that aura?”

“I don’t think it’s impressive. I just… really don’t like that Fries guy.”

“So it’s more about personality, huh? You said you doubted he was the Sword Saint—did you think his strength wasn’t that great?”

“…No, his strength is real. The way he released his aura was far beyond ordinary. I just… don’t like him. So I’d rather he wasn’t the Sword Saint.”

“Got it. You really don’t like him then.”

“Yes. Not as much as I dislike the Minister… but he’s probably second place now.”

After sticking her tongue out once more in the direction Fries had gone, Shira returned to her farm work.

I felt a little bad for Fries being disliked so much—but honestly, I was happy to see this rare, playful side of Sheila.

…That aside, I wanted to think more about what Fries said earlier.

The “strong dragon” he mentioned—he was probably talking about Yato, right?

I have no idea where he heard that rumor, but it’s shocking that it’s spread all the way to the Empire.

Though honestly, Yato’s more like a casual friend now, and she doesn’t give off any “powerful dragon” vibes whatsoever.

If anything, she seems weakest among us.
But originally, Yato was a famous dragon known as the Yatogami.

Fries may have been a bit suspicious, but he was reasonable and polite in the end.
Still, if word of Yato has traveled that far, there’s a chance even stranger people might start showing up.

There’s not much I can do about that now, but this encounter was a good reminder—
I need to stay a little more alert from here on out.
