Chapter 200: The Suspicious Person
After the summer festival, nagashi-somen, watermelon-splitting, and fireworks, we had pretty much gone through every summer event.
Now all that was left was to wait for the weather to cool down.
Honestly, I’d love to build a swimming pool so everyone could play together—well, more truthfully, so I could admire everyone in swimsuits—but building one isn’t that simple.
I even talked to Rozzo and Sid about it, but they said it would take an absurd amount of time and effort to complete, so I had to give up.
Even those two, who were both completely fired up at the idea of seeing swimsuits, had to admit defeat—so it’s clearly a massive undertaking.
If I ever get acquainted with some incredible mage one day, I’ll make it a goal to discuss building one with them.
But for now, I’ll focus on what I can do.
So, I’ve been spending my days diligently working on the farm.
But with the increase in population and liveliness around here, various “incidents” have started happening more often.
It’s not confirmed to be an incident yet, but… since this morning, a very suspicious person has been watching us from afar.
They’re wearing a filthy robe—or maybe a poncho—and a wide, umbrella-like hat that completely hides their face, so I can’t tell what they look like.
It’s the kind of outfit that would fit right into a fantasy story about a wandering traveler, but in reality, it just looks sketchy as hell.
I can’t see their face, so I can’t tell their gender, but judging by the build, it’s probably a man.
And the weapon-like thing hanging from his waist really doesn’t help his image.
They say “don’t mess with what you don’t understand,” so at first, I planned to just leave him alone and wait for him to leave.
But even after all this time, the shady figure still hasn’t budged.
Crow has been too busy keeping watch nearby to patrol further out, and Sheila’s tension level is so high she looks ready to jump into action any second.
If this goes on any longer, it’ll start interfering with everyone’s work—so we’ll have to approach him ourselves.
“Sheila, I’m thinking of going to speak with the person who’s been watching us since morning.
Would you come with me?”
“Of course. I was just about to go capture him myself, actually—perfect timing!”
Sheila started swinging her arms around, clearly eager for action.
I wasn’t planning on fighting—just talking things out peacefully—but judging by her energy, it looks like I’ll have to be the calm one here.
With a slight sense of dread, I set out with Sheila to confront the suspicious figure.
Even as we approached, the man didn’t show any sign of running away.
For someone acting so suspiciously, he was strangely composed.
Up close, I could tell he was indeed a man, probably around my age.
He looked scruffy, but beneath that worn clothing, his body was solidly built—definitely strong.
And at his waist hung something I’d never seen in this world before—a katana, like from old Japanese period dramas.
Swords are common in this world, but a curved blade like that?
No doubt about it—it was a katana.
“Excuse me. You’ve been watching us since this morning—do you need something? If you have business here, why not come forward instead of skulking around?”
While I was still intimidated by his sword and aura, Sheila spoke up in her usual firm tone.
…Actually, firmer than usual.
She must’ve been more stressed by being stared at all morning than I realized.
“Hah. I wasn’t exactly trying to skulk around, you know.”
“Then what exactly were you doing there?”
“I heard rumors that someone strong lived around here. I came looking for them, but couldn’t find them—until now.”
“Someone strong…? Well, Sheila here beside me fits that description, but are you looking for someone else?”
“This young lady seems skilled enough, but… not quite what I’m after.”
The shabby, traveler-like man said this while looking Sheila directly in the eye.
There was something provocative about his gaze—as if he was intentionally trying to rile her up.
“In that case, you won’t find anyone stronger here. Sheila’s the strongest person in this area.”
Sensing the tension rising, I quickly stepped in.
Sheila was on edge, and this man clearly enjoyed provoking her—making for a very dangerous combination.
“Oh really? That’s a shame. So the rumor about a powerful dragon being here was false, then?”
“Before you start throwing around questions, how about introducing yourself first? Who exactly are you?”
“My apologies. I assumed I was already known around these parts. My name is Freis. In the Jeanfork Empire, they call me the Sword Saint.”
Sword Saint.
If that’s a title, then this man must be someone quite famous—someone known throughout the world.
His presence, the katana, the air of mastery—it all fit.
And his reason for coming here—to find a strong opponent—also made sense.
Still… if he really is the Sword Saint, things just got a lot more complicated.
I’ll have to tread very carefully from here on out.
