Chapter 15: A Friend’s Advice
“Hey… I heard the Weimar royal castle was attacked. You wouldn’t happen to know anything about that, would you?”
One day, Ivern showed up with supplies as usual and immediately hit me with this question.
“Hm? Oh, they didn’t keep their promise, so I decided to take action myself.”
There was no reason to hide it, so I answered honestly, and Ivern held his head in his hands.
“…So, it really was you…”
“Yep.”
He must have guessed as much, so I gave a short reply, and he let out a deep sigh.
“You know… that attack has thrown Weimar Kingdom into total chaos. They’re also having issues with the demons, and some people are saying it was the demons’ doing. Now the whole country is in an uproar, talking about taking on the demons with everything they’ve got.”
“Oh?”
“That’s all you have to say? Well… then again, I guess you don’t care about any of this.”
As expected of Ivern—he knows me well.
“Exactly. Whatever happens to Weimar is none of my business.”
“Yeah, that’s you alright.”
Ivern muttered this with a tired sigh as he unloaded the supplies.
“What’s with you? You don’t feel the same?”
“Well, they’re recruiting adventurers as volunteers, and a lot of people I know are signing up. They keep asking me to join, and it’s getting annoying.”
“So, why don’t you just go?”
Knowing Ivern, I thought he’d be the first to sign up for something like this, so it was a bit surprising that he was refusing.
I casually suggested he go, and Ivern gave me a stern look.

“What?”
“I figured it was probably you behind it all. Everyone else is fired up to fight back against the demons, but I don’t exactly feel that way. If I joined, I’d just drag everyone else down.”
“Hmm. You’re still the responsible one, as always.”
This time, Ivern’s serious nature seemed to work against him.
“If I didn’t know about your feud with the royal family, I probably would’ve joined the volunteer force too. But to be honest, this whole thing is a false accusation against the demons. I just feel sorry for them.”
While I was thinking that made sense, I finished checking the supplies Ivern had brought.
As we took a short break, Ivern seemed to remember something.
“Oh, right. After the royal castle bombing, they lifted your bounty.”
“Oh?”
From what Ivern said, it seemed like the royal family was aware that I was the true culprit behind the attack.

They probably realized I had figured out they were hiding the princess, so they lifted the bounty to appease me.
Looks like they’re pretty scared of me.
Might as well let them stay afraid.
Will I attack them someday? Or maybe I won’t?
Let them live with the stress, always wondering.
“Since the bounty’s lifted, I guess I don’t need to keep hiding. Should I go ahead and take down this barrier?”
“Wait, you should hold off on that.”
“Huh? Why?”
I’d been considering removing the barrier since I was tired of having to check whenever something tripped it or using surveillance spells to monitor the princess, but Ivern stopped me.
When I asked him why, his answer was surprising.
“They only lifted it in Weimar. The other countries still have you on their wanted list.”
“Huh?”
Wait, seriously? If one country lifted it, couldn’t they all just do the same?
“Because of that, there are rumors that the castle attack wasn’t by demons but by you.”
“Well, it’s not just a rumor—it’s true.”
“I know that. But now there might be people who come after you again, claiming you’re a criminal. So it’s best to keep the barrier as is.”
“Sigh… I still have to live this inconvenient life, huh?”
“It’s inconvenient, but it’s better to keep the barrier up to protect Meyleen.”
When he brought up Meyleen’s safety, I didn’t have much choice but to keep the barrier in place.
“Ugh, what a hassle…”
That’s when something occurred to me.
“Hey, Ivern.”
“What?”
“Do you know why the other countries haven’t lifted my bounty?”
“Uh…”
Ivern looked a bit uncomfortable as he started to explain.
“Well… I think it’s because they haven’t given up on you yet. The wanted posters say ‘dead or alive,’ but they actually want to capture you alive.”
So, they want to use me as a convenient pawn, huh?
“Those guys are as disgusting as ever… should I crush them?”
“Wait, wait, wait! Don’t go picking fights everywhere! If you do that, the entire world will come after you. You’ve got Meyleen and a child to think about—is that what you want?”

“Hmm. No, I can’t let that happen. Fine, I’ll let them go this time.”
“…With you, ‘letting them go’ isn’t just a figure of speech; you’re actually letting them off the hook, which is scary.”
Ivern sighed, and I couldn’t help but snort in amusement.
“Hah. Then they should just leave me alone. I won’t do anything if they stay out of my way.”
I only end up having to deal with them because they keep coming after me.
They should learn to stay quiet for once.
“Haha. Yeah, that’s true. You’re pretty harmless as long as people don’t mess with you.”
“Heh, you’re finally starting to get it.”
“Well, after knowing you this long, I’d better. For now, just lie low for a bit.”
“Ugh… such a hassle.”
Taking Ivern’s advice, I decided to keep the barrier up for a while longer.
And I soon found out it was a good call.
