Chapter 11: Living conditions change little by little (Part two)

“There’s an old building behind the house that used to be used by the servants until a few years ago. Now they’re all living in a new building. why don’t you use the old building?”

For a moment, I ruminated the idea.

I felt if it would be much the same as now and I wondered if I would be under the care of Lessard again.

But I couldn’t help but ask.

“I’d appreciate the help, but would you be okay with me borrowing it?”

Lessard nodded quickly.

“The house will be dusty because it hasn’t been touched for a while, but once it’s cleaned up, it should work much the same as this main residence.”

Also, there are some old but working magic tools left behind.

I’m a little hesitant to accept that suggestion here, even though I said I don’t want to be pampered and want to fend for myself.

But it’s true that otherwise I wouldn’t be able to rent a house.

“I’ll pay the rent, but I still feel uncomfortable. Is there any other kind of work I can do besides investigating monsters?”

“If so, live there, work included.”

“Well, that’s…”

“You’ll also serve as the caretaker of the old building. I’d ask you to do simple tasks such as cleaning the house regularly and cutting weeds in the garden.”

The proposal was something that even an eleven-year-old could do.

Even if the old building was to be used for other purposes, it would be difficult to use it in its old state.

So, it wasn’t strange that he wanted Ren to take care of the simple maintenance.

“Of course, I don’t ask you to do anything else. As long as you do some simple administration. In fact, that would be a big help.”

He said that even if he wanted to entrust the job of the caretaker to someone, it wouldn’t be possible if he didn’t trust him.

The old mansion has a road that connects to this mansion, so they couldn’t just hire someone blindly for security reasons.

“The servants and knights had their own jobs to do, so I couldn’t just aske them for help.”

“I see…”

“So it would be a great help to me if you could take care of it for me.”

These weren’t just words of concern for Ren.

The feelings were conveyed in every word of Lessard’s speech.

In the first place, from Lessard’s point of view, he wanted to keep Ren as close to him as possible, as he was still Ren’s protector as before.

These circumstances made this case convenient for both of them.

“If you can let me pay the rent properly, by all means.”

“No, thank you. The rent will be deducted from your salary for the work. I don’t need to tell you about the work of a caretaker. However simple the work may be, it’ll be paid separately from the investigation of monsters.”

The rent he offered wasn’t cheap.

However, considering the location and the size of the house, it wasn’t unreasonable.

The building was old, but considering that he was renting a building where he wouldn’t have any difficulties in living, he considered it rather inexpensive.

“No problem, I’ll take it under those conditions.”

“I understand. You can go to the old building anytime you like and if you want, you can go there right now to see what’s going on.”

“I’ll be ready to move in a little bit at a time.”

Ren said goodbye to Lessard and left his office.

But is this really called self-support? There’s some doubt, but there’s also the work aspect, paying not-so-cheap rent, and the circumstance of not being able to rent a place to live alone.

Considering these things, this is no different from any other important step.

I am going to work hard in Clausel for a while longer, until the reconstruction of the village is finished.

I reaffirmed that I will try to do my best in Clausel for a while longer.

◇ ◇ ◇ ◇ ◇ ◇

I returned to the guest room where I’ve been staying since spring and started to pack what little I had.

There was really not much to carry.

The only thing I had to carry was a wooden box that dad had brought from the village.

The other luggage wasn’t really much, and if I may say so, it was enough to move out even now.

“Alright.”

Anyway, today wasn’t the first day to start living in the old house.

There are no daily necessities, and if you ask me, it needs to be cleaned at least a little.

I wanted to check on things first, so I left the room with only the crate in my arms.

Then, by chance, I bumped into Licia, who was visiting him.

“Ren? What’s wrong all of a sudden?”

She looked at Ren and tilted her head when she saw him trying to carry the crate from his room.

“I was thinking of getting ready to move.”

“Moving? who’s moving?”

“Of course, it’s me.”

“—- Eh?”

Licia stiffened.

It was as if she’d been left for days at absolute zero.

    1. I think the father was a bit manipulating in this conversation he is basically next door will still have trouble going out to hunt. Doesn’t want mc to get away from his daughter

      1. To be fair, though, Ren is still the Baron’s vassal’s child, and thus has an obligation and a duty to make sure that he’s protected and provided for. To be honest, Ren is being rather impertinent to the Baron and being rather demanding. This is due to him coming from a modern world and standards, but both in real life and in this setting, it’s impossible and unrealistic for an 11-year-old to be independent and live on their own unless there are rather tragic circumstances. Also, as I’ve previously stated, it’s the Baron’s duty and obligation to look after his vassal’s child, especially after the accomplishments he’s done by saving his daughter. He can’t let Ren do whatever he wants and live too far away from him. So, by all counts, he really should continue staying in the mansion, but MC’s being a too-humble-to-the-point-of-arrogance, timid, obstinate, impertinent, and pushover beta male.

Seriously, if this was me, I’d just stay in the Baron’s mansion and do what I was told and let the Baron fulfill his obligations while looking for ways to fulfill mine and train myself as a future knight, instead of being so obsessed with living on my own and disrespecting the Baron by being impertinent with my demands. MC really ticks me off sometimes.

  1. Doesn’t he understand he’s being more unreasonable for doing all this than just staying in the mansion? I bet the Baron only said that it would be better to the old house to be kept clean cuz Ren wouldn’t back down no matter what.

If he thought things through he would understand that by staying in the mansion while working is just like those live-in jobs… He could ask to be downgraded to a servant room, but wanting to move out is modern day mentality which is why it doesn’t make sense for him to be so stubborn about it
