Chapter 17: Battle on the Highway

After a restful night at the nostalgic “Dancing Duck Inn,” we left the adventure city before dawn.

If we needed anything, we could gather more information on our way back.

For now, it was unanimously agreed that heading to the capital city was the priority.

The adventure city of Advante is a pivotal point in the kingdom, where several highways intersect. To head to the capital, we would take the “Northwest Highway,” as straightforward as its name implies.

The capital city, Surdina, is located in the northwest of the territory. It’s about a two-week journey by carriage, but we could move faster on foot.

“We’ve come quite a way, haven’t we? How much further, Saran?”

“Just a little more. We can stay overnight at the next rest town, and we should arrive by tomorrow afternoon.”

Feeling weary of the endless highway, I let out a small sigh.

Despite being the road to the capital, the streets were deserted, and the scenery didn’t change much. Perhaps it was because of winter, but it seemed like there were very few merchants around.

“After camping out yesterday and the day before, I’m really craving a bed.”

“Gregure!”

“Hehe, so even Gregure prefers a straw bed.”

Watching Fimia speak to Gregure, I felt a bit curious.

“Hey, Fimia. Do you understand what Gregure is saying?”

“Well, I’m not sure.”

“But he was just talking.”

“It’s more of a feeling…”

“Gregure!”

It’s strange how it seems to work. Despite being raised by me, Gregure has already grown quite attached to Fimia. While I don’t dislike horses, as an adventurer, I feel the desire for a mount capable of combat.

“Gregure really likes Fimia.”

“Gregure?”

“Jurg is sulking because he’s been replaced by Fimia.”

“Gregure!”

At Rolo’s words, Gregure, seeming to sense something, moved alongside me with Fimia still mounted. It’s probably because they’re from the same stable; my horse didn’t seem scared at all.

“Gregure!”

“What is it?”

“Gregure!”

“I don’t know what you’re saying, but I don’t need sympathy or apologies. Just protect Fimia.”

“Gregure!”

Ah, I see, it’s a feeling.

He’s clever. I didn’t think the swift lizard Raptor was such an intelligent monster, but at least Gregure seems smart enough to understand our intentions.

As I pondered this, I felt something cling to the back of my neck.

At the same time, Rolo shouted.

“Jurg!”

“Ah, they’re here!”

Dismounting my horse, I lifted my battle mace.

There were multiple signs of impending attack. And it seemed like we were surrounded.

Well, of course, if there’s a highway, humans will pass through it.

For monsters, it’s undoubtedly a good place to ambush.

“It’s a group of Borgul ape-men. I’ll leave them to you.”

“Got it. Rolo, let’s go! We’ll split up after engaging.”

“I’ll go counterclockwise.”

With his short sword at the ready, Rolo emitted a chilling aura as he cast enhancement magic.

Though he usually seems gentle and laid-back, in battle, Rolo shows no mercy.

Like me and Saran, he’s an adventurer who doesn’t hesitate to kill enemies.

“Alright, let’s go!”

With a thunderous noise, there was an explosion of wind and shockwave from behind.

Using Saran’s magic as a signal, we also charged forward.

“Oraaaaaaaaaaa!”

Swinging my battle mace horizontally, I knocked away the Borgul ape-men wielding crude weapons.

Despite being crude, their armament meant that the higher-ranking Borgul High and Elder Borgul were likely lurking behind the horde.

Once I find them, I’ll crush them first.

Crushing their skulls is the quickest way to end any fight or brawl.

I mowed down the Borgul ape-men.

Lately, I’ve had to do paperwork, travel, and have meetings…it just wasn’t the job for me.

Let me clear my frustrations.

As he kicked around and made a half turn, Rolo, who had also severed the head of the ape-man Borgul with a small sword, met my eyes.

“I think I was a little faster.”

“No way. I’ve taken out more of them.”

Laughing together, we turned our gaze to the main force of the Borgul ape-men who had stopped in their tracks.

It seemed they had planned to surround and confuse us, then finish us off with their main force, but they had miscalculated.

“There he is, riding on the wolf like he owns the place.”

“That must be the leader of this pack.”

Next to me, Rolo, his shortsword glowing pale blue, stood ready. The enemy numbers weren’t that many. They were insufficient to take us on.

“Oops, my hands slipped.”

Just as we were about to charge, Saran fired a pale blue lightning bolt from his staff. Several of the Borgul ape-men who had been observing were hit, and their forms quickly distorted. This seemed to provoke them, and they charged towards us.

“See? Now it’s easier.”

“You really have an unpleasant personality, you know that?”

“I get that a lot.”

With a slight sigh at the sneaky mage’s comment, Rolo and I charged together. Regardless of their numbers, once we crushed the High Borgul riding that wolf, it would be over.

“Out of the way! If you don’t want to die!”

I smashed the oncoming Borgul ape-men. As I did, a white figure rushed past me.

“Gregure!”

“Sei!”

Both I and Rolo… and even the High Borgul leader were dumbfounded.

The High Borgul leader, who had taken a blow from the flail to the head without reacting, fell from the wolf and collapsed to the ground.

“Gyaaa!?”

“Gregure!”

Gregure, who had leaped, stomped on the head of the High Borgul leader, who was screaming in pain, crushing it with a crunch. Then, as if glaring at the Borgul ape-men, he turned back.

“He’s scary… is this what they call a ‘Saint’?”

“Fimia’s a bit of a tomboy, isn’t she?”

Watching the Borgul ape-men scatter and flee, we sighed with a bit of frustration at the resolved battlefield.

“Well, that’s that. Let’s move on.”

Contrary to our mood, Fimia herself smiled with a clear, cheerful expression.
