Chapter 10: Mithril Alloy

In the middle of the night, I was lurking in the shadows, fiddling with a wire, trying to hide my presence. Is this mithril alloy? It’s so thin, it can’t be ordinary mithril.

“What’re you doing fiddling with that metal, it’s scaring me… have you become a metal fetishist like Bowman?”

“That’s a terrible thing to say. I’m not like Bowman, I’m not a metal freak. And this isn’t just any metal. It’s mithril alloy, the greatest invention of the century.”

“Oh…?”

I show the Mithril alloy wire to Vigna who has a suspicious expression on her face due to the unfamiliar words.

“Hahaha! It can’t be helped. I’ll explain it to your stupid muscle brain.”

“What? I’ll kill you!”

“I’m sorry for getting carried away Vigna-sama! An alloy is a technology that mixes metals which ends up bringing out the good characteristics of both of them. In this case, the magic conductivity is high. It’s a bit expensive, but it’s a mixture of expensive mithril and cheap easy-to-process iron.”

She’s upping the threat from crushing to killing! I’m a prince! Isn’t this woman too disrespectful?

“What? What’re you talking about? Mithril’s hard to process. If Mithril was mixed in, it wouldn’t be so thin. The mithril sword I originally had was made by a skilled blacksmith who worked very hard to create it.”

Perhaps it was because mithril was used in her own weapons, unlike with fertilizer, she realized how amazing this was. She pulled out her beautifully shining mithril sword and showed it to me, letting out a cry of astonishment.

Originally, mithril itself is expensive and difficult to process so mithril swords are given only to the best knights in our country, a kind of status.

And the skilled blacksmith who made it was Bowman. Well if you think about it, I have an excellent guard knight and a blacksmith in my possession. It’s not bad don’t you think?

“Then, try to see if it’s true. You can tell by using the fire magic on this wire. If it’s Mithril, the fire will dwell on it.”

“That’s fine but… if it’s iron it will melt, don’t be mad if it does. Breath of the fire dragon coat it…. no way”

With her words, a fireball swirled around the end of the wire and it lit up like a torch. The sight was not something ordinary iron could produce. This was only possible because of mithril’s ability to hold magic.

“Fufufu, you see, this is mithril alloy. If we have it, we can make magic-resistant armor and use magic in our daily life as well.”

“It’s really amazing that there’s mithril mixed in with this.”

As I looked at Vigna, who was looking at the fire on the wire with a stunned expression on her face, I heard something that sounded like a cry. It seemed that the guests had finally arrived. Vigna and I looked at each other and nodded, and headed straight for the field.

As expected, there were goblins climbing up the mud walls.

“I won’t forgive them for stealing the crops I’ve worked so hard to grow.”

I glared at the goblins as if they were my parents’ enemies. Well, my parents are more assholes than the goblins.

I’d been using the bones of the ancient fire dragon and armored armadillos as fertilizer to cultivate my fields, but when I woke up this morning I realized that my crops had been stolen, so I ambushed them like this.

Well, the crops are delicious and nutritious, so I can understand why they would want them. But I won’t tolerate thieves.

“This… Sorry, I’m inexperienced so I could only build such a wall.”

“What are you talking about? The damage is only this much because of your efforts. Ask me to make a clay wall, it will take a year.”

I hold my gun while replying to Vigna’s apologetic words. It’s thanks to her that we’ve only suffered this much damage. If it weren’t for the wall, monsters and animals other than goblins would be able to pick off all the lovely crops I grew.

“You’re….really nothing. I‘ll show you what I can do! I’m not as strong as Galatea, but I’m strong too!”

“I’m counting on you Vigna.”

There were four goblins that had invaded to steal the crops. While I shoot one of them with my gun, Vigna chops up two of them. Seriously, that’s awesome. ……

It seems like the goblins weren’t much of a challenge for her as expected.

—————————————————————————–

Goblins

Goblins are weak in strength, but are cunning and like to work in groups. They’re weak in front of the strong and stay away from dangerous places, but once provoked, they could be troublesome.

—————————————————————————–

Once the information flowed in after I touched a goblin, I called out to Vigna.

“Don’t kill them, I want the goblins to think it’s dangerous here. injure them properly and let them escape!”

“I see… we’re going to hurt them and chase after them back to their nest and destroy the entire nest. Nice idea Grace!”

“What’re you talking about? I can see the habits of the monster I touch with World Library.  Goblins are timid, so if they realize that this place is dangerous, they won’t come near here again. Just hurt them a bit.”

What horrible thing did this woman come up with, is she a fighting race or something? Exterminating them by entering their nests means invading the goblins’ territory. We don’t want to take any risks, so we’re trying to get the goblins to stay away, so why is killing them all a prerequisite?

By the way, this is a strategy I thought I could use after browsing through exotic books and now that I’m sure of it, after seeing it in the World Library, I’ve decided to implement it. It was originally developed in a village where there were no knights or adventurers, and it was said to be a strategy that took advantage of the characteristics of goblins.

“Well, if you’re okay with it, then so be it. Breath of the Wind Spirit, cut them all down.”

I’m not sure if she heard me or not, but Vigna used her wind blade to slash the back of a goblin that was trying to escape by climbing the mud wall. It was a pretty nasty gash, but it didn’t look like a fatal wound.

I look at the goblin’s fleeing back, covered in wounds, and vow not to make an enemy of Vigna, as I gather up the goblin corpses and the thorny clubs they dropped. The bones could be used as fertilizer, and the weapons could be used for something.

“However, we need to take some measures. We don’t know how many goblin settlements there are.”

“That’s right, we should make the wall in such a way that they shouldn’t be able to climb. Why don’t we try attaching thorns to the mud wall like this club? No, rather it’ll make it easier to climb.”

“That’s it! Thank you Vigna! I think I can handle it.”

I felt Vigna’s words reminded me of something. The goblins were climbing up the mud walls. But if they got pierced by thorns, they will take serious damage.

“What? If you want me to rebuild the wall I will, but I don’t think it’ll do much good.”

“No, that won’t be necessary. I’ve got a great idea. We’ll get it done tomorrow.”

“Hmm… Well, whatever.”

“You’ll see. This is where Grace Vermillion’s domination begins.”

What is she saying to my great words? I was laughing with the mithril alloy wire in one hand, ignoring Vigna who was staring at me. I’m going to make something new and leave my name in the World Library too.

Immediately, I went to Bowman to put my idea into action.
