Chapter 12: The god
“Don’t panic! There are only two enemies! Moreover, they are hindered by the trees and can’t fly properly! Focus on defeating them one by one!”
In front of the monsters she had never seen before, Enju, realizing her own powerlessness, was retreating along the path she had come, protected by the three knights.
It was then that it happened. The monsters suddenly appeared from above.
The atmosphere shifted drastically, and the knights’ frantic shouts and the monsters’ blood-curdling roars echoed through the air.
At the knights’ instructions, Enju hurriedly hid behind the shadow of a tree.
The monsters that appeared were deep green creatures with a pair of spiky wings. They freely flew through the air, and their body color blended with the forest, making it difficult for the knights to engage in battle.
“Should we guide them to the captain’s position?”
“No, if they breach the gate, it could cause a collapse. We have to take them down here!”
The sounds of battle drifted farther away from Enju.
Peeking out from the shadow of the tree, she saw that the knights were gradually moving away from her, drawing the two monsters toward them.
One of the monsters was already covered in wounds, and though the knights were struggling, they seemed to be gaining the upper hand.
Enju sat down, leaning her body against the tree trunk, and let out a relieved sigh.
At that moment, the distant sky glowed red.
“W-what…?”
The light blinked for a moment and then faded away peacefully.
When Enju became aware again, the knights, along with the monsters, had completely disappeared from view.
“…I really am just a hindrance…”
This wasn’t what she intended, and Enju buried her face between her knees, hugging her legs tightly.
She had been confident.
With her Swordsmanship skill, she had confidence that she wouldn’t be a burden even when facing monsters.
When her father had mentioned bringing her brother on the expedition during dinner, Enju had felt both anxiety and confidence welling up inside her.
The concern for her older brother, who couldn’t use [swordsmanship].
And the self-assurance that, if her brother was allowed to accompany the expedition, there was no reason she couldn’t go as well.
Enju loved her brother dearly.
She thought that, if the time came, she could protect him. But then—
“My older brother was much stronger…”
Faced with a monster, she had no choice but to cling to her brother, the very one she was supposed to protect. The words that reassured her in that moment came from no one other than her brother.
It was only then that Enju finally realized the reason she wasn’t allowed to accompany the expedition.
“I’m not strong at all…”
Perhaps it was the anxiety from being alone, but her vision began to blur.
It was the first time since awakening her skill that she had felt such a sense of helplessness and loneliness.
“When I get back, I’ll have my brother look at my swordsmanship…!”
Determined that it would do no good to keep wallowing, Enju lifted her head, only to see the worst possible thing.
(…!)
The flying-type monster the knights were fighting.
Exactly the same type of monster, another one, appeared.
Enju, who had been trying to stand up, quickly crouched down in panic.
The monster was circling around, seemingly searching for something.
Was it looking for its companions or hunting for prey?
In either case, it was not a situation favorable for Enju.
(If I don’t move now, I’ll be in trouble…)
The moment the monster turned its back, Enju quietly dashed away.

“Ha, ha, ha…!”
On the unstable ground, with extreme tension, Enju continued running desperately.
Finally, after checking behind her and confirming that the monster was not there, Enju stopped.
“Haa, haa, haa…”
The moment she stopped running, her legs began to tremble uncontrollably, and she could barely stand.
Collapsing to the ground, she tried desperately to catch her breath while looking around, and suddenly realized something.
“Where… is this…?”
She had been so focused on getting away from the monster that she had no idea where she was now.
What she did know for sure was that it was a place neither like where Dolph and the others had been nor the exit of the forest.
“What should I do…?”
She rested her hand on the wooden sword she had brought for self-defense and crouched down.
Then, even more hardship came rushing toward Enju.
“LOOOOAAAAOOAAAAA!!!!”
“Why, why are you here?”
The monster that she thought she had escaped had appeared.
The monster, finding its prey, let out a triumphant roar, and its sharp jaw was now aimed at Enju.

“Ugh, I have to fight…”
She tried to summon strength into her hand, which was gripping the wooden sword. She tried to, but no strength came.
Her hand trembled with fear, and she couldn’t even properly grip the wooden sword.
Not only that, but she couldn’t even stand up, and during that time, the monster had closed the distance, getting closer to her.
“Ugh, brother…!”
What came to mind in that desperate moment was not the stern but reliable face of her father, Dolph, but for some reason, the face of her older brother, Hyde.
Even though she understood it wouldn’t help, she cried out, clutching at him, and at that very instant— a gust of wind descended upon her.
“GYOAA?!?!?!”
With a deafening sound, the monster that had been approaching from the air was slammed to the ground.
The ground shattered with a shock, and a roar of dust and sand rose into the air, staining the green of the forest.
Amidst the dust, there was a figure.
“——ah.”
It was a young man with black hair and pure white wings growing from his back.
When he saw Enju, he smiled in relief and immediately turned to face the monster.
“GYO…? GYO… GYAAAAA!!!!”

The monster, covered in wounds, let out a furious roar and flew into the air.
The young man, however, looked down coolly at the rapidly approaching monster and swung the wooden stick he held in his right hand.
“Ha—!!”
With that single strike, the monster’s body was cleaved in two, disintegrating into jet-black light as it vanished.
A mana stone fell to the ground, and as the young man descended, he picked it up.
“Incredible…”
Enju was entranced by the brief moment.
The life-threatening danger she had just been in felt like a distant memory.
The scene before her was so shocking it left her awestruck.
“God…?”
The majesty of the young man with the pure white wings made Enju momentarily see the figure of a deity.
“Ah, th-thank you for saving me…”
In a panic, Enju bowed her head as the young man walked toward her.
“…In a little while, a flare will go up into the sky. Use it as a guide to leave the forest. Don’t worry, there are no more monsters around here…”
The young man’s eyes seemed to be looking at something far away, not here.
Feeling an inexplicable pressure, Enju involuntarily lowered her head. Then, the young man’s hand reached out to her head.
“It’s okay. You did well.”
“—Eh?”
With those words, the young man flew back into the sky.
Enju, as if to chase his disappearing figure, looked up at the sky.
Then, placing both hands on her head where he had patted her, she whispered softly.
“Brother…?”
