Chapter 85: Challenged by a lowly Noble

“Hey, you!”

“Hmm…?”

As Rest was about to leave, he was addressed in a rough tone.

Turning around, he saw a young man a few years older than himself standing there.

“You’re Rest, right? The fiancé of Miss Viola and Miss Primula.”

“Yes, that’s me… and who are you?”

“I’m Nick Bale. I’m from the retainer group of the Rosemary Marquis family!”

Rest had heard of the name Bale before.

The Bales were a noble family related to the Rosemary Marquis.

In the hierarchy of the nobility, there were relationships between the main family and branch families, where the latter would be supervised and protected by the former. Except for the dukes, who were related to the royal family, marquises held the highest rank among nobles and thus had many branch families under them.

“I’ll make it clear… I don’t acknowledge you! I’ll never allow a nobody like you to marry the two young ladies!”

Nick, the young man who introduced himself, snarled at Rest.

Behind Nick were several youths of the same age, glaring at him in the same manner.

(Well… I guess that’s understandable.)

Rest chuckled.

While it was unclear why Nick and the others had the right to criticize him when Albert, the head of the main family, had approved of him, he could understand their feelings.

In terms of his past life, it was like the school’s Madonna suddenly starting to date the unnoticed otaku character in class.

To the other guys, there might be some aspects that they couldn’t accept.

(Marrying women like Viola and Primula… It’s only natural for other men to feel jealous. I guess I have to accept that.)

“I see… So, what do you plan to do since you don’t acknowledge me?”

Could he be picking a fight?

If so, he would have to assert himself to avoid being underestimated.

“Let’s have a race!”

“…A race?”

Rest understood that it was a challenge, but did he really just suggest a race?

“That’s right! We’ll race from here to the master’s mansion in the Rosemary Marquis territory! Whoever arrives first wins! If I win, you have to withdraw as the young ladies’ fiancé!”

“…A race? Surprisingly peaceful way to settle things.”

“Of course! I can’t resort to violence against a younger mage who’s on my side!”

Nick stood with his hands on his hips, looking disgruntled.

Although he seemed to have behavioral issues, he didn’t seem inherently bad.

“Well… I don’t mind a race, but I can’t withdraw as their fiancé, you know?”

“What!? Why!?”

“Well, it’s a formal engagement. It’s not something you or I can cancel on our own, right?”

“Hmph…”

Nick seemed slightly taken aback when Rest pointed out the truth.

“…You have a point. But we’ll still have the race. I won’t back down with my raised fists!”

“That’s fine by me.”

In fact, it was a good opportunity.

In order for Rest to marry into the Rosemary Marquis family, he needed to gain the recognition of the retainers and branch nobles.

This was a chance to demonstrate his strength.

“While I can’t withdraw from the engagement… if I lose, I don’t mind reporting to the master that ‘I may not be suitable as your daughters’ fiancé’.”

“I see… Then let’s start right away!”

“I’m in too!”

“I’ll participate as well!”

Similarly, other young men and youths raised their hands.

They must have also been vying for the position of the Rosemary sisters’ husband.

It was a good opportunity to show off their strength.

“Hahaha! Young people are so spirited!”

“It reminds me of the past… We used to pick fights with Albert too!”

“Shall we bet on who will be the winner? I’m rooting for Dibble’s disciple!”

Meanwhile, the elderly mages who had been watching the scene smiled indulgently at each other.

Perhaps this was a regular event in the Rosemary Marquis family?

(The Rosemary Marquis family is a prestigious magic family, but there seem to be quite a few hotheads… After all, the lady of the house is a bit of a wild boar herself…)

Rest felt slightly exasperated, but he preferred this straightforward challenge to underhanded harassment or backbiting.

He stretched lightly, preparing for the footrace ahead.

“Alright… Let’s begin! Are you ready!?”

Nick nodded to one of the elderly mages.

The mage nodded back and raised his right hand.

“Ready… Set… Go!”

“Acceleration!”

“Body Enhancement!”

At the signal from the elderly mage, the young mages all started running at once, using magic to enhance their bodies and sprinting with incredible speed.

“Body Enhancement! Acceleration!”

Meanwhile, Nick surged ahead, using two spells simultaneously to outpace the others. Apparently, he could cast spells in tandem, as befitting his arrogant attitude.

“It’s a sprint! I’ll blow past everyone and make it to the finish!”

“Super Acceleration High Accelerator!”

With an air of superiority, Nick ran… only to be overtaken by Rest, who sped past him like lightning.

“Huh…?”

The participants of the footrace were left dumbfounded by Rest’s incredible speed, watching as he left them behind with astonished eyes.
