Chapter 7: The First Encounter with a Monster

Four days had passed since I planted seedlings in the farmland created with the [Otherworldly Farming] skill. Life had settled into a routine: mornings were spent on farm work such as planting and watering, while afternoons were filled with activities like hiking and playing in the stream on the nearby mountain—a schedule reminiscent of a carefree summer break as a child.

Though I thought I’d used up all my energy while working in my previous life, I was glad to discover I still had enough vigor to enjoy nature. The only concern was that Sheila was watching all of this, but she always wore a gentle expression, so even if she thought I was odd, she didn’t seem to dislike me—probably.

Speaking of Sheila, she began helping with farm work the day after I first planted the seedlings. I initially refused, feeling bad about making her help, but her silent pressure won me over, and she ended up assisting. She seemed to enjoy it, smiling as much as when she ate, which made me feel a bit better. Still, I planned to reward her with something delicious once the vegetables were harvested.

After finishing another bland breakfast, Sheila and I headed to the fields together. Today’s work was just watering, so it didn’t take long. However, the tomatoes had already started bearing green fruit, and I thought harvesting might begin tomorrow.

The Crackdraffs were root vegetables, so I couldn’t see their progress, but they were likely ready for harvesting soon as well. The [Otherworldly Farming] skill description mentioned that crops in this farmland grew faster than usual, but I hadn’t expected them to grow this quickly.

At this rate, I might never need to upgrade the growth speed, though it was possible that other crops requiring more time would appear later.

As I pondered, I noticed Sheila puffing her cheeks beside me.

“Sheila, is something wrong?”
“Well, we’re already done for the day, so I just feel a little bored…”
“It’s true, today was only watering. But tomorrow will be busy with the harvest.”
“Really? We can already harvest them?”
“Most likely. As I mentioned before, this farmland was created using a skill, so crops grow faster than on regular farmland.”
“Your skill is amazing, Sato-san. I’m looking forward to the harvest tomorrow.”

Sheila’s genuinely happy smile was infectious, and I found myself smiling too.

“Since the farm work is already done for today, would it be alright if I went to the mountain a bit earlier?”
“Of course! You don’t need my permission. Are you planning to swim again today?”
“No, I’m thinking of catching some fish. If I succeed, we can eat them for dinner.”
“That sounds wonderful! I’m rooting for you.”

That was the plan—to try fishing in the stream on the mountain. While playing there before, I’d noticed fish swimming around, so I decided to try catching some. Fresh meat or fish had been out of my reach since arriving here, and I craved something fresh.

Encouraged by Sheila, I headed to the stream with determination. Walking through the forest, I enjoyed the chirping of birds and the sounds of small animals. However, partway there, I heard a rustling noise, as if something was pushing through the undergrowth.

Though the sound was distant, it was loud and clear, suggesting a large creature—possibly a wild boar, a bear, or even a monster. After days of peaceful routine, fear quickly took hold of me. Turning back, I sought Sheila’s advice.

“Sheila, could that noise in the bushes be… a monster?”
“It’s very possible. But don’t worry; the only ones in this mountain are Wild Boars or Fang deers, so they’re nothing to be too cautious about.”
“Oh… okay…”

Sheila’s casual tone didn’t reassure me at all. Instead, I could only give a weak smile and continue walking. Fang deer? Wild Boar?

I remembered “boar” meant a wild pig, while “deer” was, well, a deer. Deer were supposed to be cute, but the idea of a boar monster sounded terrifying.

Despite my fear, I couldn’t turn back now. As I approached the stream, the rustling grew louder.

“Th-the sound is really close now… are we really going to be okay?”
“We’ll be fine. You’re quite the scaredy-cat, aren’t you, Sato-san?”

This wasn’t something to joke about. I wasn’t scared for no reason! Yet Sheila seemed as cheerful as ever.

When we finally got close, the source of the sound revealed itself: a creature about ten meters away.

“It’s just a Fang deer. Nothing serious.”

Sheila said casually.

“Wh-what!? That’s a Fang deer!?”

The creature was massive, with twisting, grotesque antlers and fangs that would put a wolf to shame. Its bloodshot, crimson eyes stared straight ahead, and it stood over three meters tall.

No one would ever call this thing a deer. I froze, my legs giving out beneath me. Sheila, unfazed, calmly walked past me and approached the monster as if on a stroll.

I wanted to stop her, but fear gripped my throat. The Fang deer noticed Sheila and charged at her, its deadly fangs gleaming.

In an instant, Sheila unsheathed her sword with blinding speed, sidestepped the Fang deer’s attack, and beheaded it in one fluid motion.

Her graceful movements left me speechless.

“All done. We can proceed safely now.”

She said matter-of-factly.

“Sh-Sheila, that was incredible! You were amazing!”

“Huh? It was just a Fang deer… but if you praise me like that, it’s a little embarrassing…”

“But it was amazing!”

Still sitting on the ground, I clapped enthusiastically, and Sheila scratched her head, clearly embarrassed. Maybe the Fang deer wasn’t a big deal to her, but she’d just saved my life. There was no way I wasn’t going to praise her.

After that, we continued to the stream. I tried fishing as planned, but I couldn’t focus, and my catch ended up being zero.
