Chapter 19: The Princess

Inside the library, sitting at a desk with intense focus, was the princess engrossed in reading. Surrounded by books, her figure painted a picturesque scene that captivated me without realizing it.

“Sato-san, aren’t you going to speak to her?”
“I’m not sure how to approach her… Just speaking normally should be fine, right?”
“Yes, I believe so.”

Trying to cover up my moment of distraction, I decided to call out to the princess as she read.

“Princess, may I have a moment of your time?”
“Yes? Oh, it’s you… the otherworlder named Sato, wasn’t it? What brings you here?”

Her silent figure, engrossed in reading, was as stunning as a painting, but when she spoke, her rough mannerisms slightly dampened that charm. Naturally, I kept any such thoughts from showing and expressed my gratitude instead.

“Thank you for informing the king about me. Thanks to you, I was able to get his approval.”
“Huh? You came all the way here just to say that? I don’t need your thanks—I was just doing my job.”

Though her words had a bit of a thorny edge, having dealt with terrible bosses in the past, this didn’t bother me in the slightest. Considering her age, which was likely her adolescent years, the slight abrasiveness even seemed a bit endearing.

“Even so, I’m truly grateful. And to show my appreciation, I’ve brought a gift for you. Please accept it.”

“A gift? If it’s just some generic cheap sweets from the marketplace, I don’t want it.”

“It’s not anything expensive, but I believe it’s something unique that you might enjoy.”

With that, I pulled five volumes of manga out of my bag and placed them on the table.

Although the princess initially acted uninterested, as soon as she realized the gift was books, her attitude shifted. She started stealing glances at them, despite turning her face away.

“Are those… books?”

“Yes. They’re books from another world. They’re not novels, but I think you’ll like them if you give them a try.”

“Books from another world… Hmm. I don’t really need them, but if you insist, I’ll take them.”

Despite her words, it was clear she was brimming with interest, her excitement barely contained. She was practically the definition of a tsundere—not toward me, but toward the manga.

“They’re romance stories, but they’re really entertaining. Please give them a read.”

“Romance… That’s not really my genre, but I don’t dislike books. I’ll take them. You can go now.”

Glancing at the title of the book she had been reading earlier, The Heroic Tales of Greid the Hero, it was clear romance wasn’t her typical preference. Even so, her gaze remained fixated on the manga I had given her.

It was easy to see that, while she wanted to dive into them immediately, she held back because of our presence.

“I’m glad you accepted them. If there’s anything else in the future, I’ll be counting on your support.”

“Sure.”

Her half-hearted reply made me chuckle, and as I left the library with Sheila, I noticed the princess reaching for the manga the moment we stepped out. I wasn’t sure if she’d enjoy the content, but at least I knew she was intrigued, which gave me a sense of relief.

“The princess seemed pleased, didn’t she?”

“Yes. The gift selection was perfect. Thank you for your advice.”

“Oh, it was nothing. All I did was tell you she liked books.”

“Even so, it was helpful when deciding on the gift. Now we just have to hope she enjoys the content.”

“I don’t think you need to worry about that. Even someone like me, who doesn’t usually read, got completely hooked. The princess is probably already captivated by it. Shall we pretend we forgot something and go back to check?”

“No, that would be too cruel! Considering her age and position, she’d probably want to keep that a secret.”

“True, I suppose. Sorry, I was just teasing.”

Sheila smiled mischievously, showing more varied expressions recently. It felt like we had grown even closer during our time in the capital, making this trip a great success on many fronts.

“Well, now that our business is done, shall we return to the villa? Just to confirm, Sheila, you’ll be staying a bit longer, right?”

“Yes. As I mentioned before, I’d like to continue helping for a while. I may be a burden at times, but I look forward to working with you.”

“No, no, I should be the one thanking you. Let’s head back, then.”

“Yes, let’s.”

With that, our enjoyable time in the capital came to an end, and we returned to the villa after three days, riding in the carriage prepared by the king.

If I could indulge in one more wish, it would have been to meet the heroes who had been summoned alongside me…

But given the distance, I can visit anytime. For now, I’ll save that for another opportunity.

With a heart full of excitement for the farm work and my growing attachment to Lime, I returned to the villa, feeling a new sense of anticipation as I gazed out the carriage window.
