Chapter 36: You Can’t Live Without Me

“Ayo, Kenta. It seems that Lindor has once again summoned someone at Admos’ request.”

Several months after Princess Weimar’s visit, Ivern, who had just returned to town, brought back the news.

“You’ve really become a good merchant, huh.”

“…I’m tired of that joke already.”

“Is that so? Then how about ‘informant’?”

“…That has a shady, underworld vibe to it, so I’ll pass.”

“What’s up with you today, so hard to get along with?”

As they were joking around, I tickled Leon, who was sitting on my lap.

“Kyah! Kyaa-ha-ha!”

“Right? uncle Ivern is no fun, huh?”

“Eh?”

“Hey. Don’t be filling the kid’s head with weird ideas.”

“It’s the truth, though.”

“No, it’s not!”

“Are you two at it again?”

While Ivern and I were bantering, Yulia, holding Ayla in her arms, walked over.

Seeing them, Ivern’s face softened, and he grinned.

“Oh, Ayla! Come over here!”

He reached out to Ayla, but Yulia slapped his hand away.

“You’ve just gotten back! Go take a bath and change your clothes first!”

“Ah, okay…”

After Yulia scolded Ivern, he walked back home in a huff.

After traveling a long distance and sweating, his clothes must have been dirty.

Ivern’s house was already finished next door, and his family lived there now, though he mostly stayed with me during the day and just went home to sleep.

“Goodness, Dad really is troublesome, huh?”

“Huh?”

Yulia spoke to Ayla, who she was holding, but quickly turned to face me.

“Hey, do you think what Ivern said earlier is okay?”

“About the summon?”

“Yeah. Like Victoria-sama said, if they’re targeting you… do you think this place might become a battlefield?”

Yulia spoke with concern, and I let out a small laugh.

“What’s so funny?”

“You don’t need to worry so much. I’ve been here three years longer than that guy. That means I’m always three years ahead. I’ve been constantly working on developing magic and training my body. Do you really think I’ll lose?”

When I said this, Yulia looked a little relieved.

“That’s true. And since they’re targeting you, I guess we’ll just have to run if things get bad. You’ll protect us, right?”

“Maybe don’t say it so openly though.”

As we were having that conversation, Meyleen approached us.

“Sorry, Yulia. If it comes to that, I’ll fight alongside Kenta, so please take Leon and escape.”

Hearing that, Yulia looked really sad.

“Eh? Let’s run together! If it’s Kenta, we’ll be fine, right?”

“Don’t say that in front of me. But, honestly, I agree with Yulia. If possible, I want you to escape with her and the others.”

When I said that, Meyleen’s expression hardened.

“Huh?”

Then, Meyleen lifted Leon off my lap and handed him to Yulia, who was now holding both children in her arms.

“Ugh…”

But Meyleen ignored how hard it was for Yulia and pressed her hands to my face, bringing it close to hers.

“Kenta.”

“Yeah?”

“You are everything to me.”

“Okay…”

“I can’t live without you. Even if I had Leon, I might neglect him.”

“Well, I hope you try your best…”

Meyleen said something unsettling, and I asked her to try hard, but she shook her head.

“Leon is cute, but that’s only because you’re here. If you weren’t here, I wouldn’t be able to stay myself. Please, don’t leave me.”

Meyleen, who said that, was on the verge of tears.

Honestly, I thought her words as a mother were a bit lacking.

But despite that, I couldn’t help but find Meyleen, who admired me so much, incredibly cute.

“…Alright. When the time comes, we’ll fight together. But, Meyleen, Leon… I’ll protect both of you no matter what. Don’t even think about leaving Leon behind.”

When I said that, Meyleen finally nodded in agreement.

“Yeah, I understand.”

“…Meyleen.”

Yulia said that and handed Leon to Meirin.

Meyleen took Leon in her arms and hugged him tightly.

“Leon… I’m sorry for being a bad mom. But, I can’t live without Papa. Please forgive me for that.”

“Eh?”

Meyleen apologized to Leon, but Leon looked at her with a puzzled expression.

Even so, it’s clear that Meyleen’s not all right. She’s broken in some way.

If something happened to Meyleen, I’m confident I’d destroy this world. We’re both so dependent on each other’s existence.

“How should I put it… Kenta and Meyleen, your existence is a stopper for each other, right? If anything happened to either of you, it’d be a huge mess…”

Yulia said that somewhat reluctantly, but I wish she would just accept it.

We’re both aware of it.

While we were talking, Ivern, freshly out of the bath, entered the house.

“Phew, I feel refreshed. Ayla~ come to daddy.”

With a happy expression, Ivern picked up Ayla and cuddled her.

“…I gotta say, Ivern’s pretty lucky, huh?”

“Huh? I’m lucky, yeah.”

I think Yulia said that with a hint of sarcasm, but it didn’t seem to register with Ivern.

The serious atmosphere from just moments ago vanished as Ivern’s appearance turned the living room into a cozy, warm space.

In that sense, maybe he really is an essential part of this household.
