Chapter 71: The Roots of teleportation

Today is magic lesson day. Mr. Glidden and Sara have just finished eating seafood risotto for dinner while listening to me.

“A battle between a group of monkey-types and a group of dog-types? I would have liked to see that too. It would have been very impressive.”

“Yes, very much. Especially the movements of the dog-type beastmen…”

I was about to say I was captivated with them, but then I looked at Mr. Henry next to me, who had a serious look on his face. He must have noticed my gaze, but he turns to Sarah and says something like, “The cheese adds richness to the dish.”

After the talk about the dyehouse, the topic of kingdom law came up. Mr. Glidden looked happy.

“I just hope that ordinary people and beastmen can live together in peace, accepting each other and living in harmony. So, what will happen to those young people?”

“Based on past precedents, I think they will be assigned to service work for six months to a year. The letter from the guard said, ‘Since there were no casualties and there seems to be no danger of them fleeing and leaving his family behind, it would be desirable for them to do community service in the city.”

“The monkey-type young man seems to be physically fit. What do you think, Mai? Why don’t you hire them for service work?”

I was unfamiliar with the term “service labor,” so I asked them to explain it to me.

According to Henry, it is a punishment for crimes that cause no human harm and can be compensated for. Since it is service work, no wages are paid, but a workplace that provides a foothold for reintegration into society afterward is desirable, he said.

“Our take-out lunches are very popular, so if they could help out in the kitchen and deliveries, that would be very helpful.”

“Then I’ll talk to the civil servant in charge. You will have to fill out some paperwork, but if you offer, they will be happy to help. Harrison is a civil servant in the legal department, so I’ll let him know.”

“Thank you.”

The monkey-type beastman’s conversation ended there, and I told Mr. Glidden that I wanted to find and help those with high magical powers from poor families. He and Sarah were surprised but agreed. Both of their eyes were moist.

“I see. You will take over that role. Thank you.”

“Mai-san …….”

Henry was also crying the other day too. The fact that these three people are crying means that perhaps Grandma has suffered some kind of harm as a holder of high magical power. If so, I would like to take on this role even more.

“How many children with high magical powers have you found, Mr. Glidden?”

“I found quite a few with a moderate amount of magical power, but only one with an outstandingly high amount of magical power. If we’re talking about the royal capital alone, that’s about it. That child didn’t get  employed in the castle’s magic department, but instead moved to the countryside where his parents live and is probably doing well there.”

“There was only one person… Then I will patiently continue searching with sensing magic. Also, there is one more thing I would like to know today. When I use transformation magic, the objects move a small distance. I am thinking that if I can increase the distance that the objects can move, I may be able to use transformation magic to send the object to another location.”

It’s something I’ve been experimenting with every night lately.

A peeled acorn appears on the plate next to where I wanted it to be. If I make ginger ale, the ginger goes into a separate jar.

“If imagery is the key to successful magic, then I would think that if I focused my attention on moving things around, I could extend the distance even further, am I right?”

As soon as he heard my question, the smile on Mr. Glidden’s face, which had been in a good mood, quickly disappeared. Sarah-san shifted her gaze to the cup. Mr. Henry looked up at the top of the wall and began to slowly trace his lips with his fingertips. We all fell silent.

“Did my grandmother use transformation magic to fly from this world to the one I was in?”

I waited for a reply, but I don’t get one. It probably hit the mark. And Mr. Glidden apparently doesn’t want me to try it. That’s what this air and the expressions on the faces of the three of them tell me.

Mr. Henry asks me with a perfect deadpan look on his face.

“What makes you think that?”

“The idea came to me from an acorn. Ever since I realized that transformation magic could move things, I’ve been experimenting with it every day.”

“What kind of experiments?”

Henry’s face and voice are strained.

“I placed firewood on the table and cast the transformation spell, first sending the wooden plate to the table next to it. Next, I moved it to the table two tables away. After that, table three, then I moved it to the bottom of the stairs. From the bottom of the stairs to the upstairs hallway. After much practice, I can now move it from the table in the shop to the end of the backyard, in front of the high fence, with no problem.”

“What a……. You figured it out all on your own.”

What I noticed was that Henry was surprised that the acorns I had peeled moved. But it’s hard to say that now.

“A while back you were surprised when you saw acorns being moved by transformation magic. Was that what triggered this?”

“Yes. ……”

“Oh, I see. So I must have been the catalyst.”

“Henry, I didn’t do this experiment because I wanted to go back to my world.”

“Then why did you do the experiment?”

“I just thought maybe I could at least send a letter.”

Sarah murmured, “A letter.” The three of them, including Henry, were visibly relieved.

“When Henry asked me if I wanted to know about my grandmother’s past, I told him I didn’t want to know. That’s because I didn’t want to hear about things she didn’t want to tell me. But since I decided to improve my skills as a wizard, I want to master what I’m good at, the transformation magic. So, Mr. Glidden, please just tell me that one thing. Did my grandmother use transformation magic to travel between worlds?”

Mr. Glidden looked at Mr. Henry, who nodded.

“As expected of Liyol’s granddaughter. That’s right. Liyol used transformation magic as the core to travel. Only, she failed and ended up crossing the world.”

“Failed?”

“Yes. She was supposed to move just a little bit around the room, but instead she disappeared. Liyol failed, but with great luck, she made it safely to another world and survived. Why she failed, I do not know. Mai, you must swear to me that you will not try it.”

“I swear. I don’t think I, a novice wizard, can transcend this world. Besides, I’ve decided to live in this world.”

The three of them breathed a sigh of relief.

“Then let’s talk about conversion magic with peace of mind. Your grandmother, Liyol, was a genius with high magical powers. She single-handedly perfected the theory of teleportation magic.”

“I see that she did.”

“Teleportation magic, with transformation magic as its foundation, doesn’t just make the place where you appear after the transformation farther away. There is a limit to how far a single wizard can transport a person. That’s why liyol was a genius…”

Mr. Glidden was reluctant to continue. I should have wanted to know the rest, but suddenly I became scared.

“She’d just come up with a way to transform her body into herself.”

Sarah kept her head down. Henry’s mouth made a whoosh as he inhaled air.

“Oh, …… I see. So that’s how it was. That’s why the tumor disappeared from my body.”

“Mai?”

Henry gently reached out to grab my arm as I stood up unexpectedly. I had to explain to him in a way that was easy to understand why I was so excited.

“I used transformation magic to peel the acorns and remove the insects inside, right? I suppose it is the same logic that made my tumor disappear. I think when Grandmother transformed me, she was imagining that she was removing the tumor and even the bits of it that had flowed into my bloodstream.”

Mr. Glidden nodded slightly several times. I seem to be right.

“I was only focusing on the distance traveled, but I think Grandma was focusing not only on the distance, but also on the time difference.”

“Yes, she did. I’m surprised you noticed that.”

“Time difference? Mai, can you explain it to me so I can understand it?”

“With transformation magic, depending on what you transform it into, there’s a slight time difference. But I had overlooked that time difference, and just thought, ‘That’s just the way it is. ‘ I think that’s what my grandmother focused on.”

“Mai, that time difference was the keystone of Liyol’s theory.”

The acorn story is in chapter 50.
