Chapter 67: Side-chapter.7 [Conversation between Romi and her husband] ◆ ◆
Before “Romi’s Bar” opens for the day.
The owner, Romi, was doing the books while talking to her husband, Charles, who was polishing the glasses. Charles leaves the role of owner to Romi and usually works as a bartender. Many people, except for the regular customers, think of him as an employee.
“Hey, did you hear about the dye house?”
“Derrick told me about it. It’s all the talk among my friends these days. It’s something that rarely happens, so he was excited about it. I heard he wasn’t in it, but he’s a dog type. He looked so proud.”
“Are you okay? We weren’t even able to talk at all, you know? Aren’t you upset?”
Charles set the polished glass on the counter and reached for another.
“Don’t be stupid. You’re dealing with monkey type beastmen, you know? It’s not like you don’t know how strong they are.”
“But!”
“I don’t want to have my ears ripped off. Forget that, they could tear me limb from limb. Our youngest, Tina, is still so little. I don’t want to die.. Even the dog-types won’t ask a rabbit for help. It can’t be helped, right? We’re experts at escaping.”
“Again! You coward!”
Romi muttered something under her breath, but Charles, who had good hearing, heard it. She had also muttered with that in mind as well.
In truth, Charles was also frustrated. He had long been deeply distressed to hear that young monkey-type beastmen were running amok causing trouble. The beastmen, being beastmen, are ingrained with the idea of living a n earnest life.
So the story of dog-type-like beastmen coming together beyond their professions to suppress the rampaging monkey-type youths was thrilling. The beastmen who didn’t participate applauded in their hearts, saying “well done.”
Up until now, even though there had been gatherings of different races, they had never subdued the young of other races. Charles envied the stories of those who took part in the event and drank with them after their work was done. On the other hand, he sympathizes with the adults of the monkey-type beastmen, who must have felt out of place.
“Romi, cheer yourself up. Anyway, I heard that there was a civilian who assured them that Riddick would be punished for this incident. I heard that he was wearing a civil servant’s uniform. Do you think that’s possible? If it’s true, I’m interested. I wonder what kind of person he is.”
Romi glares at Charles sharply.
“Let’s not pry into the person who will punish the bad guys. It will just cause trouble for that person. The important thing is that there is someone in the castle who is on our side. Do you understand that?”
“I do, but… But I want to know.”
“Even if you do, don’t pry! For a long, long time all we could do was run away and hide if something happened to us, but from now on things will be different. We now have someone in the government who is willing to say that they won’t discriminate against beastmen. This is the beginning of a new era. A new era has come for the beastmen society. Our children’s generation will be able to live more freely.”

Romi, who had gone back to work on the accounts, looked up again.
“I have to tell the story to the children. Our ancestors , the beastmen, came from the Old Continent to the New World, passed through other countries, and settled in this country, right? We have been living inconspicuously and undetected all our lives, haven’t we? We were prejudiced by people who thought we were savages, ferocious, or that we couldn’t speak the language. But finally, there are people who don’t look down on us. This is a monumental event.”
“I agree. We should remember the last day of February as a special day.”
“Yes! We can have a free pint of ale each just for that day.”
“But keep the free stuff to that.”
“I know, I know. It is frustrating, I’m sorry I can’t help you with all the rough stuff, but that’s all I can do. Oh, I can’t wait for next February!”
Charles poured a sip of spirits into a polished glass and held it up in front of his face.
“To the civil servant working at the castle. Cheers.”
“Oh, Charles! I’ll drink to that too.”
“We’re not open yet. only have a sip.”

With that, Charles poured some of the spirit into Romi’s glass.
“So once again, a toast to this brave civil servant.”
They clinked their glasses together and drank the amber liquid.
