Chapter 134: Teaching the Foolish Prince a Lesson

(As I thought, I can’t defeat him like this…)

While exchanging magic with the third prince, Rodel, Rest inwardly sighed.

Rodel and the rebel soldiers charged toward their main camp. Despite using “Amaterasu” against them, Rest couldn’t defeat them.

Rodel defended himself by creating walls of stone and although Rest managed to inflict damage on the soldiers following him, but he couldn’t defeat them completely.

“Amaterasu” is a powerful magic, but it has a drawback that it cannot fully unleash its power without sufficient “charging” time. To unleash it on a scale capable of scattering armies as before, it would require at least a minute to gather sunlight.

(There’s no time, and I can’t afford to darken the battlefield in this situation. The gathered sunlight was too weak, so it seems I could only muster the power of advanced magic at best.)

That’s the weakness of “Amaterasu.”

There is room for improvement in the future.

“Fire Cannon!”

“Water Wall!”

Rodel cast magic, and Rest defended himself.

It’s a one-on-one fight. A duel.

There are royal soldiers of the kingdom around, but they won’t intervene. For nobles and royals, a one-on-one fight, a duel, is sacred.

As long as Rest doesn’t ask for help, they won’t intervene.

“Fireball,” “Amplification,” “Compression,” “Acceleration!”

“Super Acceleration!”

They cast magic in a quartet, but Rodel significantly enhanced his physical abilities to evade. He tried to circle around behind Rest to cut off his head, but Rest also activated “Super Acceleration” to evade the attack.

“You’re strong… Who are you really?”

“That should be my line… Honestly, I thought you were just like Cedric and I underestimated you.”

Keeping his distance from Rodel, Rest sighed.

Indeed, Rodel’s strength was considerable. He deserved plenty of praise. He had been arrogant and selfish, so Rest thought he was like Cedric, but facing him directly showed he was genuinely strong.

He belonged to Class D at the academy, but with proper study for the written exams, he could have easily ranked higher in his grade.

(He has quite a bit of magic power, and his output is higher… He shoots advanced magic as if it were nothing. This guy… If only his humanity hadn’t gone off track, he could have become a hero in his own right.)

“I’m surprised. You weren’t just talk; you’re actually strong.”

“…You’re surprisingly strong for just a viscount. How much magic power do you have?”

On the other hand, Rodel seemed to be aware of Rest’s abilities and was becoming more cautious.

“That light magic earlier. Despite using enough power to mow down the army, you don’t seem to be running out of magic energy. It’s frustrating… but in terms of magic power, you’re superior.”

“You’ve improved enough to admit that honestly… It’s a shame you didn’t become a decent person sooner.”

“…”

He said it as if to provoke, but Rodel only smiled in self-derision. He didn’t take the bait.

“Super Acceleration!”

“Super Acceleration!”

Rest and Rodel simultaneously enhanced their physical abilities and clashed on the battlefield.

In terms of physical abilities and fighting sense, Rest had the advantage. In terms of magic output, Rodel was superior. As a result, their speed was evenly matched.

“Hmph! Hah! Yah!”

(He’s really strong… as expected.)

Rest lowered his head to avoid the kick delivered by Rodel and countered with a punch. Rest tried to grab Rodel’s arm and throw him away, but at the last moment, Rodel pulled his arm back and stepped back to increase the distance.

Despite using advanced magic several times since earlier, Rodel’s magic power showed no signs of running out. While Rest undoubtedly had the upper hand in fighting sense, he couldn’t press the attack.

It seemed that Rodel also had good natural reflexes. If he had trained properly, he would have succeeded not only as a magician but also as a swordsman or warrior.

(What a waste of talent… It’s really a shame…)

If he hadn’t gone astray, Rodel would have been an asset for the next generation alongside Rest.

It was truly regrettable that such a person disappeared as a traitor instead of making a more respectable choice.

“Cedric and that guy, Celery… Why did they ruin their own futures? They should have made better choices.”

“Aaaaaaaaaah!”

As Rodel screamed, he attacked Rest.

His fists, kicks, and body tackles, enhanced by magic, were narrowly avoided by Rest. He activated his magic.

“Lightning storm!”

“What…?!”

Rest unleashed a wide-area magic centered around himself.

Lightning turned into rain, raging and piercing through both Rest and Rodel’s bodies.

“A mutual strike… Was that your aim…? Idiot…!”

“You probably think I’m an idiot, don’t you?”

Enduring the heat and impact of the lightning, Rest gritted his teeth.

He endured it by activating body-enhancing magic, but it was still painful.

But… even so, he didn’t think his decision was wrong.

(I’ll admit it… Rodel Iwood. You’re strong.)

Strong. Very strong.

Ordinarily strong enough to make it difficult to win without injury.

“But… your experience points are overwhelmingly lacking!”

Rodel might have superior overall talent compared to Rest.

However… compared to Rest, who had fought monsters since childhood and had been groomed by Marquis Rosemary and Dibble, Rodel lacked sufficient combat experience.

The rough tactic of attacking with magic while taking oneself included was not something he had even thought of.

“If we had fought five or ten years later, the outcome might have been different… but that future will never come.”

“Ku…!”

Despite being struck by lightning, Rodel immediately stepped back out of range.

A rapid departure via high-speed magic. Despite being in a pinch, it was difficult to catch.

“Amaterasu!”

However, Rest wasn’t letting him go.

Creating a miniature black star, he briefly absorbed the light.

From there, a thin laser was released, piercing Rodel’s abdomen.

Even if Rodel enhanced himself with magic, he couldn’t surpass the speed of light.

Amaterasu, without sufficient light absorption, couldn’t incinerate Rodel, but if concentrated to its limit, it could create a hole the size of a ballpoint pen.

“Kah…?!”

Pierced accurately through the liver, Rodel coughed up blood.

In a panicked state, he activated healing magic… but it was too slow.

“Huh!”

This time, Rest accelerated and closed in on Rodel.

Drawing his sword for the first time, he slashed from Rodel’s chest down to below his neck.

“Agah…?!”

“It seems you’re not accustomed to healing wounds… Compared to other magic, it’s rather clumsy.”

Rodel’s healing magic lacked the brilliance of other spells.

If he had mastered proficient healing magic, he might have been able to hold out a little longer.

“It’s over, Rodel Iwood.”

“Kuh…!”

Another strike, a slashing blow.

With a wound marked with an ‘X’ on his chest, Rodel fell, spraying fresh blood.

“Enemy general, defeated…”

When he said something like that… applause rose up from the people around him.

Allies surrounding him cheered the victor.

Somewhere along the line, most of the battlefield had already settled. It seemed the rebellion had been suppressed.

Though unexpected difficulties arose… the battle between the kingdom’s army and the rebellion had ended.

The kingdom’s casualties numbered four hundred dead and eight hundred fifty wounded.

The rebellion’s casualties were twelve thousand five hundred dead and over thirty thousand wounded. The scattered soldiers were too numerous to count.

Despite the considerable damage caused by Rodel’s unexpected rebellion… the kingdom’s army ultimately achieved a decisive victory within half a day.
