Chapter 82: Invitation from the Student Council

An offer from Andrew Iwood, the Student Council President and the second prince.

To join the Student Council Executive Committee and take on the role of overseeing other students.

“So, does that mean… you want me to oversee your own brother?”

“It’s not just about my younger brother. There weren’t any first-year members in the executive committee of the Magic Department, so we genuinely needed more manpower.”

Andrew replied to Rest’s question.

“This happens every year… The student council officers and executive committee members often come from the same department as the president. Since I’m a student of the Knight Department, most of the student council members are also from the Knight Department. Well, to balance it out, the vice president intentionally appointed someone from the Magic Department, and we also invited Celestine.”

“I see… that makes sense.”

I had heard this information before. The Student Council President is elected, but in most cases, they come from either the Magic or Knight Departments. There isn’t a rule about it specifically. However, children of royalty or high-ranking nobles often choose either the Magic or Knight Departments, making it easier to gather votes. Despite the pretext that status doesn’t matter within the academy, nobody wants to oppose those in power, and everyone wants to gain favors. When a member of the royal family or a high-ranking noble runs for Student Council President, supporters gather actively, and opposing candidates often withdraw voluntarily.

It’s particularly evident when someone like Andrew is involved. When a member of the royal family runs for Student Council President, most other candidates would withdraw unless they’re exceptionally thickheaded. In Andrew’s case, all other candidates withdrew, so he automatically became the Student Council President without an election.

(It might be different if a foolish prince like Rodel were to run… Andrew-sama is from the Knight Department, so naturally, most of the student council members are also from the Knight Department. There’s also friction between the Magic and Knight Departments, and it’s easier to approach students from the same school building.)

“I wanted to gather members from various departments for the Student Council, but it didn’t go as well as I hoped. The gap between departments seems to be too significant.”

“So… why me then? Since Your Highness is the president, wouldn’t there be others who want to join the Student Council?”

“Well, there are others. Several candidates stepped forward. But… it’s no good if they’re all useless, right?”

Andrew shrugged.

“The Student Council Executive Committee is in charge of maintaining discipline among other students. You need the power and influence to make others think, ‘I can’t cause trouble if this person is here’ In that regard, you’re perfect.”

“…”

“You’re a first-year student in Class A of the Magic Department, the son-in-law of the Rosemary family, who holds the position of Chief Court Mage. On top of that, you defeated Daniela-kun, the second-ranked first-year student of the Knight Department, in the field of ‘swordsmanship,’ which has become a hot topic among the newcomers. If you join the executive committee, you’ll be able to keep the first-year students of the Magic Department in check… except for my foolish brother, of course.”

“Ah… do you have a bad relationship with your brother?”

“Terrible. Absolutely terrible.”

Andrew narrowed his eyes and raised his lips.

He looked like he was smiling, but his eyes weren’t. Viola and Primula, who were sitting on either side, seemed slightly frightened for a moment, but the tense atmosphere disappeared soon after.

“He’s an exceptionally foolish person. Occasionally, among those blessed with power and lineage, there are individuals who don’t care about those around them… but he’s particularly bad. He even looks down on Celestine, his fiancee and the daughter of a duke, and insults me by saying things like ‘you entered the Knight Department because you don’t have any talent in magic.’ I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve wanted to cut his head off.”

“Well, well…”

If he had done that, Rest wouldn’t have to go through so much trouble. From what he heard before, it’s not as simple as just punishing him.

“If you become a member of the executive committee, you’ll be allowed to use magic against students who commit wrongdoing. There’ll be no need for indirect methods like using smoke screens.”

“…”

“How about it? It’ll improve your grades, and it’ll be advantageous for your job after graduation… but I guess that’s irrelevant to you.”

Andrew shrugged his shoulders again.

For Rest, who is engaged to the Rosemary Marquis family, academic evaluations aren’t really necessary. Becoming a court mage is well within his capabilities based on his skills alone. Additionally, he has connections through the Rosemary Marquis. There’s no reason for him to join the student council to seek teacher evaluations.

(Still… wouldn’t it be attractive to openly retaliate? In the academy, using offensive magic outside of class is prohibited… It’s surprisingly restrictive.)

“I agree…”

Rest casually glanced around.

“… … …”

Viola and Primula returned Rest’s gaze silently. They seemed to be leaving the decision up to him.

“…Can I have some time to think about it?”

“Yeah, of course. Let me know when you’ve made a decision.”

Rest gave a tentative response, opting to put the decision on hold.
