Chapter 12: Verification

I invested additional skill points to raise the skill level of ≪Status Analysis≫. As a result, the range of data collection has expanded even further.

------------------------------

Status Analysis Level 2

  MP Cost: 1

  Effect: Quantifies the target's status.

------------------------------

At Level 1, the analysis target was limited to oneself.

However, upon reaching Level 2, it became possible to target others as well. Being able to understand the status of opponents in battle has become subtly significant.

"Alright... let's try various things right away."

I accepted a monster subjugation quest at the guild and headed into the dungeon.

Applying ≪Status Analysis≫ to myself, I'll observe how the experience points accumulate and monitor their changes.

First, I'll check once before entering the dungeon and once again after entering.

――As expected, just entering the dungeon doesn't grant experience points.

Next, I'll check if encountering monsters alone provides experience points.

――Naturally, this alone doesn't grant experience points.

However, when I used ≪Double Slash≫ to instantly defeat the orc and checked.

―― I gained about 5 experience points.

"Seems like defeating monsters does grant experience points after all..."

If that's the case, it would be a system similar to the RPG games that were common in my previous life ― but to jump to conclusions so quickly would be hasty.

Let's investigate more specifically when experience points can be gained by varying conditions.

For example, it might be that I gained experience points because I used a skill. Thinking that way, I immediately perform a ≪Double Slash≫ without a target.

The result ― I gained a small amount of experience points, but it wasn't as much as when defeating a monster.

In other words, experience points can be obtained just by using a skill, but the amount is not significant.

This supports the well-known rule that individuals like healers who don't engage in direct combat find it difficult to level up.

"For now, it seems like defeating monsters is the straightforward way to gain experience points..."

I continue through the dungeon, advancing my investigation.

Once again, I encounter a monster. This time, it's the same orc as before.

Since I instantly defeated it last time, I couldn't determine whether I gained experience points by defeating the monster or simply by engaging in battle with it.

To check this aspect, I decide to fight this time while holding back a bit.

“≪Magic Arrow≫!”

Among the skills I possess, I use the one with the least power to deal damage to my opponent.

When the skill hits the opponent, I check the experience points once.

"Wow! Experience points are gained!"

The result was, in a sense, quite groundbreaking.

Just to test it, I use the sword to damage the opponent without using the skill.

Even then, I still gained experience points.

Indeed, it seems that you can gain experience points not only when defeating monsters but also when "dealing damage to monsters."

"≪Double Slash≫!"

I finish off the orc with the deadly dual-wielding skill. When I check the experience points, they have indeed increased, but the magnitude of the increase is not much different from the value when using "Magic Arrow" to deal damage.

I make sure not to forget and jot down the current increase in experience points in my notebook.

"This is quite a significant discovery..."

In typical RPG games, experience points are gained when defeating opponents.

And even in this world, there is a superstition-level belief that "those who deliver the finishing blow to a monster are more likely to level up."

However, in this world, experience points are gained based on the damage inflicted on the monster.

Conversely, defeating an opponent does not necessarily result in exceptionally large experience points.

In other words,

From the perspective of earning experience points, it is advisable to face "monsters with extreme durability."

Conversely, when facing monsters with extreme emphasis on attack power, one must be extremely cautious to avoid taking damage. However, even if you manage to dodge attacks, you won't gain experience points, making it "futile effort." The risk and return are not balanced.

On the other hand, when facing monsters with extreme durability, there is almost no risk of being defeated in a single blow. However, to "defeat" them, you need to deal a lot of attacks, making it a challenging task. But from the perspective of gaining experience points, this becomes an advantage because the more damage you inflict, the more experience points you earn.

This will be a significant hint for exploring ways to efficiently gain experience points.

"Next, let's investigate whether the experience points obtained vary with the opponent's level."

I proceeded through the dungeon, battled opponents of various levels, and verified how much experience points could be obtained.

As a result, a very natural outcome was obtained.

In general, there are fewer instances of battling opponents with lower levels than oneself, and conversely, engaging in battles with higher-level opponents yields a greater amount of experience points.

This rule is within the realm of expectation.

However, the fluctuation in experience points due to level differences is surprisingly large.

In other words, when facing opponents with higher levels than oneself, a substantial amount of experience points can be obtained. Conversely, engaging in battles with lower-level opponents results in almost negligible experience points.

"Which means..."

Summing up the information so far, the efficient way to level up seems to be "battling higher-level opponents with durability, dealing as much damage as possible."

With that in mind, I come up with an idea.

Knowing about dungeons filled with monsters that have durability and are higher level than me, I, Haruto, says...

“――It’s the ≪Old Temple in the Swamp≫!”
