Chapter 66: The Classes Have Begun

Classes at the Royal Academy are divided into compulsory subjects and elective subjects for each department.

Compulsory subjects for the Magic Department include "Magic Theory," "Magic Acquisition," "Herbology," "Magic History," "Magic studies," and "Practical Magic," totaling six.

Elective subjects include "Alchemy," "Magic Medicine," "Barrier Magic," "Astronomy," "Magic Biology," "Divination," and "Ancient Languages."

In addition to selecting courses from their own department, students can also take classes from other departments. There are also classes that teach the skills necessary for nobility, such as "Dancing," "Ladylike Education," and "Etiquette."

The first class Rest and his friends attend is "Magic Theory," one of the compulsory subjects for the Magic Department.

"Now, let me reintroduce myself... I'm Nephilly Carder, the homeroom teacher for Class A and the instructor for 'Magic Theory' and 'Practical Magic'! You can call me Carder-san or 'Mom-san!"

Appearing in the Class A classroom was their homeroom teacher, Carder-san. She was the assertive-looking female teacher with chestnut-colored hair tied back that they had seen at the orientation on the day of the entrance ceremony.

"Now that I'm your homeroom teacher, I'll be getting serious with you all. Those who don't perform well might find themselves demoted to Class B even before the final exams!"

While class placement is generally based on entrance exam and final exam results, promotions and demotions can also occur at the discretion of the teacher. It seemed that Ms. Carder was quite strict.

"Now, let's begin the class... Ruido Gistal, stand up!"

"Huh? M-me!?"

Ms. Carder pointed to a male student with a surprised expression. The boy who had been stifling a yawn hastily stood up.

"We'll be discussing Magic Theory today... Can you explain the Five Great Magics in general magic studies?"

"Uh, well..."

Perhaps he was caught off guard by being singled out. Despite it being a basic question that appeared in the entrance exam, he couldn't come up with an answer and just flustered.

When Primula calmly answered, Ms. Carder nodded.

"Elemental Magic, which uses attributes like fire and water. Biological Magic for enhancing the body and healing. Object Magic for manipulating inanimate objects like rocks and metals. Summoning Magic for summoning magical creatures from other realms. And Faith Magic, where magic power is offered to deities, angels, and spirits in exchange for miracles. These are the five fundamental magic in modern magic. In addition to these, don't forget to learn Alchemy for creating potions and magic tools, and Barrier Magic for interfering with space."

Ms. Carder glanced around the classroom with a piercing gaze, then turned her attention to another student.

"Now, Jewel Eazel. Among the Five Great Magic, name all the magic that students in the Magic Department of this academy will learn!"

The timid girl with glasses answered hesitantly.

Rest stood up, his breath caught in his throat.

It was a considerable challenge, but... it was something he had learned during his exam preparations.

"About 1,500 years ago, during the ancient Diamond Dynasty, monsters were summoned for a war with a neighboring country. However, the appearance of the monster army led to the destruction of the capital overnight. More recently, about twenty years ago, a research facility within the Geisel Empire mysteriously caught fire. All researchers perished in the blaze. The Empire hasn't released detailed information, but nearby residents reported witnessing a giant of flames, suggesting that the failure of summoning magic may have been the cause."

"Excellent. That's correct."

It seemed that his answer pleased Ms. Carder.

Ms. Carder smiled satisfactorily.

Rest let out a relieved sigh and sat back down in his chair.

"It's not uncommon for practitioners to injure themselves when magic fails, not just in summoning magic. It's beneficial to have a firm grasp of the fundamentals to prevent such harm. Magic Theory may seem to emphasize basics, but don't forget its importance, as it forms the foundation of magic."

As Ms. Carder tapped the blackboard with her pointer, she opened the textbook.

"Now, let's continue the lesson. Turn to page ten in your textbooks."

Finally, it seemed the prelude to the class had ended.

Ms. Carder began the lesson in earnest, and the students diligently took notes from the board.

Although Ms. Carder seemed quite strict, her teaching style was clear and engaging, not boring the students.

Amidst the tension, Rest and his friends finished their first class since entering the academy.
