Chapter 81: His Majesty’s Decision
The relaxed atmosphere in the guest room tightened once more.
“Your Majesty, His Majesty the King has arrived.”
The servant’s announcement transformed everyone at once. The women, who had been cooing over the baby holy dragon only moments before, composed themselves, and even Mars—the scholar of holy dragons—stopped filling page after page with notes.
Perhaps sensing the change, the holy dragon hurried back onto my lap.
The door opened quietly.
“Forgive the delay. It took a little time to suspend the meeting.”
His Majesty entered and sat in the chair prepared for him. The dignity of his presence settled the room.
“Have you heard what happened, Your Majesty?” the Queen asked.
“Of course, Minerva. I was told that the Holy Dragon Egg had been discovered.”
His Majesty raised an eyebrow at us. By now, however, only the shell remained. Mars was carefully collecting every fragment.
Could holy dragon eggshell be used as a potion ingredient? I should have asked for a piece before he gathered it all.
“Your Majesty, this is the holy dragon that hatched from the egg.”
I lifted the creature from my lap. The King’s eyes widened; evidently, he hadn’t expected the egg to have hatched already.
“So this is a holy dragon. May I touch them?”
“I believe that should be fine.”
Why was everyone asking me as though I owned the dragon? I needed to correct that misunderstanding before I somehow ended up keeping them as a pet.
His Majesty gently stroked the holy dragon’s fur. I wouldn’t have objected if he had simply taken responsibility for them then and there.
“Your Majesty, regarding the holy dragon’s care…” Mars began, then hesitated. Sweat appeared on his brow.
“Speak freely. I wish to hear the opinion of the kingdom’s foremost holy-dragon scholar.”
“Yes, Your Majesty. According to the surviving legends, a holy dragon requires a considerable supply of mana while growing. Mana can be transferred most efficiently by the person chosen by the dragon. In this case, that person appears to be Lord Julius, who hatched the egg.”
“I see.”
This was new. Appraisal had said nothing about supplying mana after the hatching.
Still, if other people could provide mana less efficiently, then surely the castle’s many mages could manage it. There was no reason the responsibility had to fall entirely upon me.
“Kyu…”
The holy dragon looked up at me with round, mournful eyes, as though they had sensed my attempt to pass them off to someone else.
My chest tightened.
Rosalia immediately gathered them into her arms.
“Big brother…”
She looked up at me pleadingly. That expression was unfairly effective.
“Father, it would be cruel to separate Julius from the holy dragon,” Chloe said.
“That’s true,” His Majesty replied. “Then perhaps Julius should remain here and raise the dragon in the castle.”
What? No. Absolutely not.
Living in the royal castle would suffocate me. My peaceful life would vanish completely.
“That sounds ideal,” Her Majesty said. “We should summon Margrave Heine and discuss it at once.”
Your Majesty, please don’t encourage him.
At the King’s order, a servant departed to find Father.
I’m sorry, Father. Your troublesome son has caused you another problem.
No, wait. This began with Chloe. I had merely been swept along. I was innocent.
“What are you going to name them?” Chloe asked cheerfully.
I wanted to pinch her cheeks.
“Do we know whether the dragon is male or female?” Caro asked.
“Holy dragons have no male or female distinction,” Mars explained. “As for names, no surviving record mentions a named holy dragon. I can’t say whether naming one is appropriate.”
Perhaps treating an intelligent sacred creature like an ordinary pet would be insulting. They had spoken directly into our minds while inside the egg, so they clearly possessed intelligence.
“Would you like a name?” I asked, stroking the dragon’s head.
“Kyu!”
The eager response proved they understood me.
“How about Tama?”
“Nya!”
“Ow!”
They bit my finger.
“Big brother, they don’t like that name.”
“I was joking. I merely wanted to confirm that they understood our words.”
“Then it’s certain!” Mars exclaimed. “The holy dragon comprehends human speech. This is a discovery of historic importance.”
He resumed writing at tremendous speed.
The dragon glared at me. They were rather cute when offended. Perhaps ‘Porky’ would have been even worse.
“Let us choose something suitable,” Caro said. “What about Sei?”
The holy dragon showed little interest.
“That’s too obvious,” Chloe said. “Holy dragons are said to be messengers of Mirares, the Creator Deity. What about Mira?”
“Kyu!”
The reaction was immediate and delighted.
Was it truly acceptable to name them after the Creator Deity? I felt uneasy. I already suspected Mirares had been interfering with my life, and this would entangle me even further.
More importantly, the dragon had once spoken into my mind. Would Mira eventually be able to do so again?
“Your Majesty, Margrave Heine has arrived,” a servant announced.
Father had come more quickly than expected. Then I remembered that he was already visiting the castle to deliver the presentation-model hot-and-cold air blower.
Perhaps he had other business here as well.
Either way, I desperately needed him to prevent my permanent residence in the royal castle.

This isn’t a story about the MC growing up and developing pharmaceutics. This is a story about a boy who gets dragged around by the willful people around him in very inconvenient circumstances, as a method to entertain the reader.
True very true.
