Chapter 85: How an F-Rank Adventurer Fights
While teaching Aeris how to gather medicinal herbs, Tauro asked why she had come to the village.
Her answer was surprisingly well considered.
She had concluded that items were essential if she wanted to master the role of a rear guard.
Whether she used healing magic as a [Priest], offensive magic as a [Mage], or defensive magic as a [Barrier Master], every spell involved a delay and consumed mana. Medicinal herbs, potions, and similar items could compensate for those weaknesses.
Aeris had heard that Dansas Village was rich in medicinal herbs and offered many related quests, so she had come to learn about them while she was still F rank.
The village did indeed have many varieties of medicinal plants.
Tauro himself had discovered new herbs there and learned to make several kinds of potion.
His basic physical abilities were still those of a child, so he compensated through tactics and preparation.
Experience had taught him how important potions were to that approach.
He therefore sympathized with much of Aeris’s reasoning.
At first he had thought she was overbearing and not particularly bright, but she had clearly considered her goals seriously. Tauro decided to teach her properly.
Aeris was astonished by the boy’s knowledge of medicinal herbs.
She had prepared by studying books, but Tauro knew far more.
He taught her the basics useful on gathering quests: how to find each plant, which similar species could be mistaken for it, where it grew in clusters, and how long it took to regrow.
Beyond that, he possessed knowledge she would have expected only from an experienced pharmacist. He knew which herbs could be mixed, how their effects changed with the formulation, preparation methods and techniques, and even which plants produced different results depending on the order in which they were added.
Tauro claimed he had learned from books, then taught himself the rest by applying that knowledge.
If it was true that his only skill was a garbled-text skill, the amount of training he had achieved through his own effort was extraordinary.
More than that, he freely shared the fruits of all that effort with her. Aeris felt as if the difference in their character had been placed directly before her, and that she had lost.
Then she would have to prove her own worth during the kobold extermination afterward.
Aeris burned with determination.
“Rumeya, use [Taunt] and draw its attention!”
“Got it! Come at me, kobolds!”
Rumeya activated [Taunt], an ability of his [Shield User] skill, concentrating the kobold’s attention on himself.
While Rumeya blocked its attacks with his shield, Shin cut in from the flank.
Tauro threw a durability-enhancing potion to Rumeya and a strength-enhancing potion to Shin. Then, from the gap between them, he fired an arrow with [Precision] and finished the kobold.
The three worked together beautifully.
They had practiced regularly against imagined enemies, so the tactic flowed smoothly.
Aeris, however, had no time to cast offensive magic before the battle became a melee. Her aim wasn’t yet accurate enough to risk a spell that might strike an ally.
She tried to use support magic instead, but Tauro’s potions beat her to it.
The kobold extermination ended quickly without Aeris accomplishing anything.
“Sorry. I wanted to test how the three of us would fight together this time,” Tauro told her.
He had noticed her preparing to use magic, but he didn’t know which spell she intended, when she would cast it, or what effect it would have. They couldn’t pause the battle to find out, so he had prioritized the three-person tactic.
“You must fight monsters together as a team all the time. That coordination was excellent.”
Aeris praised them honestly. There had been no opening for her to join in.
“What? Today was the first time we’ve fought together,” Rumeya replied. “The tactic was one Tauro taught us, though.”
“That’s right. I was nervous because it was our first time, but it worked well.”
Shin and Rumeya exchanged a high five.
That was their first coordinated battle?
Aeris was stunned.
Although she was only F rank, she had accumulated battle experience by being allowed to join a higher-ranked team.
She took pride in her adaptability and had been praised for it. Yet these three had performed better on their first attempt than the team she normally accompanied.
And Tauro had taught them everything.
Just who was this boy?
Aeris developed an intense curiosity about him.
