Chapter 382: Creation of an Unknown Plant
After meeting with Count Graunewald, Tauro borrowed the garden of the mayor’s residence for an experiment.
His father was too busy to attend, but repeatedly appeared at the office window to watch.
Your work isn’t progressing at all, Father…
Feeling the count’s gaze, Tauro arranged the necessary materials from [Magic Storage].
“Will this experiment use [Creation Magic (Weak)]?” Ankh asked.
“Yes. Zion, please be ready to replenish my magical power if anything goes wrong.”
“Y-Yes! You can depend on me, Tauro-sama!”
Delighted to be entrusted with an important role, Zion positioned herself beside him.
“Then I’ll begin.”
Tauro intended to test whether [Creation Magic (Weak)] could produce the seed of a plant that had never existed in this world.
“[Creation Magic (Weak)]!”
A light brighter than usual blazed between the materials in his hands. When it faded, numerous seedlike grains remained.
“It worked!”
Several seeds nearly spilled from his arms in his excitement.
“What are they supposed to grow into?” Ragune asked, lifting one carefully.
“If they match my design, they’ll produce fruit containing soy sauce.”
“Soy sauce?”
“A seasoning from my previous life. I designed an entirely new plant around it.”
Tauro drank a magic-restoration potion while Ankh examined another seed.
“You created a species from imagination alone? Leader, are you certain this is safe?”
“We’ll know more after growing one.”
Tauro planted a seed.
“[Plant Growth Promotion Magic]!”
A shoot broke through the soil and rapidly extended into a ground-hugging vine. Leaves spread along it, followed by fist-sized, egg-shaped brown fruits at regular intervals.
Tauro stopped the spell and immediately drank another magic-restoration potion.
Zion remained tense beside him, ready to intervene.
“I’m all right now,” Tauro assured her. “Thank you.”
He picked one of the hard brown fruits.
“Now we test whether the contents match my intention.”
He cut away the tip.
The rich aroma of soy sauce escaped immediately.
“Success!”
A small taste confirmed it. The liquid was intensely salty, with depth and a faint sweetness.
“What would you use this for?” Ankh asked after sampling it.
“Cooking. Soy sauce is an extremely versatile seasoning. More importantly, I designed this plant to grow only in the saline soil around Caxart’s salt lake.”
“Very few crops survive here because of the salt carried through the soil and air,” Ragune observed.
“Exactly. This vine absorbs excess salt from the ground and concentrates it in the fruit. It should tolerate the conditions that damage ordinary crops while also producing a valuable seasoning.”
“The idea is absurd,” Ankh said, staring at the fruit, “but you actually made it work.”
“As expected of Tauro-sama!” Zion exclaimed, whether or not she fully understood the agricultural implications.
“It could become another specialty unique to Caxart,” Ragune said.
“Now that this succeeded, I want to try a more ambitious variation.”
Tauro removed a single seed and a small piece of metal from [Magic Storage].
“What are you planning?” Ankh asked.
“This is a fragment of Orichalcum I obtained in the Dragonfolk Village. I want to combine it with the new seed and create a plant that bears metal.”
“A plant that produces Orichalcum? Are you serious?”
“Mineral crystals can grow when dissolved substances precipitate and accumulate into an ordered structure. The mechanism isn’t identical, but I want to design a plant that absorbs suitable material and forms metal-bearing fruit.”
“So the seed itself would create metal?” Ragune asked.
“Would that not be extraordinary?”
“It would be amazing!” Zion declared before the experiment had even begun.
“This attempt will probably consume far more magical power, so I’ll create only one seed. Zion, remain ready.”
“Yes!”
She braced herself beside Tauro.
Holding the Orichalcum fragment and the soy-sauce-fruit seed together, Tauro focused on the new design.
“[Creation Magic (Weak)]!”
