Chapter 383: A Crisis Beyond Death

The moment Tauro began chanting [Creation Magic] and light seeped from his palm, a dangerous chill raced down his spine.

“Oh, crap! This is definitely going to kill me!”

Tauro had felt this same danger while creating Zion’s Opposing Demon Gauntlets.

This time, however, that experience worked in his favor.

He immediately stopped chanting [Creation Magic].

Even so, Tauro felt as though his magic power were being torn out by the roots.

At the same time, his consciousness was ripped away, leaving him with the sensation that he was floating.

I stopped halfway, and I still died!?

More certain than ever that death was upon him, Tauro collapsed helplessly to the ground.

“Tauro-sama!”

Zion rushed to him the instant he lost consciousness and immediately began pouring her own magic power into him.

Ragune tipped a magic-restoration potion into his mouth and forced it down his throat.

Ankh began chest compressions on the spot.

The garden instantly descended into a frantic, desperate struggle.

Count Graunewald, Tauro’s father, had been working upstairs while keeping an eye on the experiment. The moment he realized what had happened, he rushed down to the garden.

Having witnessed the entire incident, Count Graunewald didn’t waste time asking questions. Instead, he ordered the mages among his subordinates to join Zion in transferring their magic power to Tauro.

Zion continued pouring magic power into Tauro while meditating to replenish her own reserves.

“Someone give Zion a magic-restoration potion!”

Ankh issued the order without pausing his chest compressions.

One of Count Graunewald’s unoccupied subordinates hurried to Zion’s side and held the potion to her lips, helping her drink while she remained in meditation beside Tauro.

 Then—

“…Gah!”

 Tauro began breathing again.

At that moment, the Voice of the World resounded in his mind.

“One activation condition for the special skill [&%$#], <One Who Has Surpassed Mere Luck>, has been confirmed. [Luck] has ranked up to [Great Fortune].”

 My [Luck] ranked up!?

As Tauro reeled in surprise, the Voice of the World continued.

“One activation condition for the special skill [&%$#], <One Who Has Leapt Far Beyond the Brink of Death>, has been confirmed. You have acquired [Ability Limit Breakthrough]. Which ability would you like to apply it to?”

It was a question he had never been asked before.

 …What?

Tauro was bewildered by the Voice of the World’s question.

“Which ability would you like to apply it to?”

The Voice of the World repeated itself.

The first thing that came to mind was the ability responsible for this disaster.

 …[Creation Magic (Weak)]?

“Limit breakthrough for [Creation Magic (Weak)] confirmed. It has ranked up to [Creation Magic].”

 …

 …That’s it?

The entire exchange took place in an instant.

Everyone around him was overjoyed that Tauro had come back to life. Zion and Ragune clung to him.

Ankh slumped where he was, exhausted and relieved.

“Leader… I really thought we’d lost you this time.”

Ankh spoke when he noticed Tauro’s eyes open and saw him looking around.

“…I thought so too. I lost so much magic power that I was sure I wouldn’t survive. Thank you, everyone. Zion’s magic transfer seems to have helped especially. And it was a good thing I performed the experiment here, with all of you nearby. Your quick response saved me.”

Tauro spoke so clearly that it was hard to believe he had only just returned from the brink of death. Count Graunewald let out a long sigh of relief and sank to the ground.

“Tauro, watching someone hover on the brink of death right in front of me is terrible for my heart…”

He placed a hand on Tauro’s head, then continued.

“But I’m glad you survived. If my child had died before my eyes, I don’t think I’d ever have recovered.”

Count Graunewald released another relieved breath, stood, and issued orders to his subordinates.

“Carry Tauro to his bedroom. Cancel everything scheduled for this afternoon.”

“Father, I’m fine now!”

Tauro protested in a hurry, not wanting to cause any more trouble.

“How could someone who was moments from death possibly be fine, you fool? You’ll rest for the remainder of the day.”

There was no anger in Count Graunewald’s eyes—only unmistakable concern.

“…Understood. I’m sorry.”

Tauro reflected on his recklessness as Zion, now crying with relief, and Ragune both held him tightly.

As a precaution, Tauro was carried to his bedroom on a stretcher. Only after lying down on the bed did he finally begin to calm down and think about the new ability he had acquired.

He had instinctively chosen to break through the limits of [Creation Magic], but when he considered it more calmly, he couldn’t help thinking that [True Eye] might have been the better choice.

“If I’d chosen [True Eye], maybe it would have unlocked another ability, like [Personal Appraisal]… I might have made the wrong choice…”

Dying would have been incomparably worse, but Tauro set that obvious fact aside and regretted his impulsive decision. There was nothing he could do now that the choice had already been made.

“I removed the ‘(Weak)’ from [Creation Magic], but what exactly changed…?”

Tauro had been tempted to test it for some time, but after the uproar only ten minutes earlier, he hesitated.

Since this sort of impulse nearly killed him every time, he decided to show restraint for once.

 And he reflected.

[Creation Magic] was, by its very nature, a double-edged sword.

How he used it mattered just as much as what he created.

If he overdid things, the consequences could become troublesome later. Worse, as this incident had proved, a single attempt could kill him instantly.

Tauro had thought he was finally getting the hang of it, but he reached the same conclusion as always: [Creation Magic] was best used sparingly.
