Chapter 37: A Stroll Around the Royal Capital
The day after his whirlwind encounter with the prime minister and the nobles, Tauro finally had a day off.
Early that morning, a messenger from the prime minister had informed him that he was scheduled to meet the prince the following day.
Tauro wanted to spend the day relaxing, but Mina was his bodyguard and had to remain beside him. If he lounged around alone in his room, she would be stuck there too.
“…Shall we take a stroll around the royal capital?”
After some thought, Tauro invited Mina out.
“Is there anything you need, Mina? I don’t have a particular destination in mind, so we can stop wherever you like.”
He asked her as they walked.
“Don’t you need to stop by the trading company?”
“Apparently everyone there’s busy preparing for tomorrow’s launch of Reversi. Visiting would only make them feel obliged to entertain us, so I thought we should stay away.”
“I see. I want to buy souvenirs for my parents and younger brother, but we’ll still be here for a few more days…”
“You have a younger brother?”
“Yes. He’s the same age as you.”
“I see. He must be proud to have you as his older sister.”
“Actually, my brother is a fan of yours. He’s watched the puppet show over and over, and he keeps saying he wants to hurry up and become an adventurer like you.”
“A fan!? Of me!?”
Tauro was stunned.
The boy had probably gotten the wrong idea from the exaggerated puppet show. Tauro was pleased, but also troubled.
“He even reenacts the scene where you drove off the debt collectors using copper coins.”
Gah!
That story had spread too!? It had been painfully melodramatic, and remembering it always made Tauro cringe with embarrassment.
He blushed visibly, not merely in his imagination.
The royal capital was vast, crowded, and immense in every respect.
The great square was packed with so many people that it looked as though a festival were underway, and rows of stalls filled it with energy.
The roads surrounding the square were broad, with carriages passing constantly.
Tauro and Mina crossed the great square on foot and headed for the magic-tool district they had heard about at the inn.
It was Mina’s choice.
Saisi had magic-tool shops too, but nothing on the scale of those in the royal capital.
It would take days just to browse them all.
The two found a large shop and went inside.
“Welcome!”
A clerk greeted them.
Tauro looked around. Every magic tool was displayed with meticulous care.
These weren’t the sort of items customers could casually pick up and examine.
We came into the wrong shop!
The atmosphere made Tauro realize how out of place they were.
“Hmm? Is that…!?”
A backpack sat on a pedestal directly ahead of them.
Its label read, “Magic Storage (Large), Backpack Type,” while the price card said, “Please ask a nearby clerk.”
“That’s our shop’s pride and joy: a unique creation by the renowned legendary magic-tool craftsman Jean Fellow. It costs ten platinum coins.”
The clerk’s manner suggested that a grubby child had wandered in and was being silently asked whether he could possibly afford it.
[Presence Detection] confirmed that the clerk didn’t regard Tauro kindly.
But that hardly mattered. One platinum coin was worth roughly ten million yen by the standards of his former life, so ten coins meant one hundred million yen.
When he used [True Eye], it valued the backpack at about seven platinum coins.
A thirty-percent margin was fairly modest once the shop’s overhead was considered. Perhaps this store was surprisingly honest after all.
At the moment, however, Tauro cared less about the price than the item itself.
He leaned forward like a child staring through glass at a coveted toy.
Magic storage was a staple of fantasy stories.
It was one of the things Tauro had always wanted.
“I don’t need a large one. Do you have anything smaller?”
Mina, who had been watching beside him, asked the clerk.
Tauro was surprised that the price hadn’t fazed her.
“Are you going to buy one, Mina?”
“I’m only looking. I want to know the prices, functions, and designs.”
She had effectively announced to the clerk, without the slightest shame, that she had no intention of buying anything but still expected to see the merchandise.
“V-very well. Please come upstairs.”
Overwhelmed by her confidence, the clerk led them to the second floor.
After browsing all kinds of products, the pair marched out without buying a thing.
“Hahahaha! You’ve got incredible nerve, Mina!”
“You were enjoying yourself by the second half too.”
And so the two thoroughly enjoyed their day off.
I don’t know what the original Japanese word is but is “Chamber of Commerce” is almost certainly the wrong translation for it.
It isn’t, believe it or not. You can MTL the raws but you’ll get the same thing.
Raw says 商会 which is like a business, or a company. More literally think of it as a ‘place to do business’. Deepl does translate it as chamber of commerce, google tl and bing tl both translate it as company.
Chamber of Commerce would still make sense for business and since it’s large scale, would fit.
I’ve worked for a company that called their online e-Commerce which I’m guessing translated as electronic commerce (being online). It would depend on how the author wants to set their merchant guild as and this being the royal capital would make it the Chamber of Commerce in a sense.
Hm. It’s… hm. In context it sounds more like a Bazaar or Expo than a proper Chamber of Commerce, but from the kanji “Chamber of Commerce” is technically correct…
