Chapter 36: The End of an Exhausting Day
The prime minister continued his appraisal.
“Hmm… Strange. I have appraised garbled skills before, but I can’t determine what skill this garbling conceals.”
He furrowed his brow.
“What does that mean?”
Tauro asked for clarification.
“It means that deciphering it would require an appraisal ability above my S-minus rank. Ordinarily, one can infer the nature of a skill from the abilities acquired and the pattern of attribute growth. As I said, however, your proficiency is increasing across multiple professions, making prediction impossible. If all of them were martial professions, I might suspect Holy Knight, Hero, Champion, or something similar. Yet your proficiencies include unrelated trades such as blacksmithing, woodworking, and apothecary work. In all my life, I’ve never appraised growth like yours.”
Even the prime minister had given up on explaining Tauro’s peculiar development.
If the man who probably possessed the finest appraisal skill in the capital couldn’t solve it, Tauro certainly couldn’t.
There was no reason for pessimism, however.
His proficiencies were increasing—and in several professions at once.
God had indeed granted him a valuable special skill.
Seen that way, Tauro felt certain he had been blessed.
The excessive difficulty of its ability-unlocking conditions was its sole drawback. He would simply continue working steadily and take life at his own pace.
“That concludes the appraisal. You appear to possess a rare skill, Satou, and your proficiencies in numerous professions are high for your age. None stands out by itself, but you’re plainly diligent. I’ve found nothing suspicious, so there should be no problem.”
Tauro remembered that the prime minister had said he was evaluating him on someone else’s behalf.
“I shall have you serve as instructor to His Highness the Prince. His Highness refused to accept anyone else. Teach him once a week; on the other days, please instruct us and the young members of the households represented here.”
“Th-the prince!?”
His pupil would be royalty.
And another thing…

The situation kept growing more serious. Tauro wanted to avoid attention, and his mind threatened to go blank.
“Don’t worry. You’ll be paid appropriately.”

Tauro longed to retort.
Once released from the den of nobles, Tauro and his companions were driven back to the inn.
It was already evening.
Meena, who had spent the entire gathering as an unnoticed presence beside him, offered a few words of sympathy.
“You worked hard.”
“Yes…”
“But your next opponent is the prince, isn’t he?”
Her intonation made it impossible to tell whether she was teasing him or being perfectly serious.
“…I would rather forget about that for now.”
Tauro sighed as he entered the inn.
An employee immediately noticed that he and Meena had returned.
“Welcome back. Shall we prepare your meal or your bath first?”
“What would you prefer, Meena?”
Tauro deferred to her out of courtesy.
“I think I’d like a bath after dinner.”
“Where shall we eat? I’d prefer to take my time in my room.”
“That suits me too.”
“Then we’ll do that, please.”
“Certainly.”
The employee hurried toward the back of the inn.
“Please prepare dinner for Master Tauro and his companion! They’ll dine in their rooms. Begin preparing their baths for afterward as well!”
The call carried all the way to the entrance.
“Meena, thank you for guarding me all day again.”
“And you worked hard too, Tauro. Get some proper rest.”
The inn was busy with the evening meal. As Tauro climbed the stairs to his room, the bustle of employees making their many preparations followed him upward.
