Chapter 38: First Contact with the Prince
The morning had arrived for Tauro to begin instructing the prince.
There was no carriage from the trading company outside the inn. In its place stood a magnificent white carriage from the royal palace, covered in vivid carvings.
The door bore the royal family’s gryphon crest.
Inn employees and passersby alike stopped and stared at the extraordinary sight.
A carriage bearing the royal crest had come to collect a ten-year-old boy.
No one was more surprised than Tauro himself.
He had assumed the trading company’s carriage would take him as far as the castle gates.
He had hoped to avoid attracting attention until then.
“Master Tauro Satou, we’ve come to escort you.”
The man who had come for him bowed respectfully.
Eager to escape the attention as quickly as possible, Tauro replied, “Let’s leave at once!” He hurried Mina along and climbed into the carriage.
The carriage proceeded through the castle grounds.
Ordinarily, carriages weren’t permitted inside the castle, but royal carriages were exempt.
The man who had collected them explained this. Tauro didn’t know his name, so he decided to call him Sebas for the time being.
Just let me walk with everyone else!
It was the heartfelt cry of a boy who wanted no more special treatment.
“We have arrived.”
Once they disembarked, Sebas led them deeper into the castle.
As they walked, knights and maids occasionally bowed to them. Tauro wished they would stop.
I’m a commoner from a farming family!
Mina remained composed, but even she couldn’t ignore knights bowing to her and returned their bows.
Perhaps, as a warrior, she admired knights.
Tauro found that side of her rather charming.
“Attendants may proceed no farther.”
Sebas instructed a man stationed at the entrance to escort Mina to a waiting room.
“See you later, Mina.”
“All right.”
She nodded and followed the man into the waiting room.
“This way, Master Satou.”
Sebas guided Tauro farther inside.
They stopped before a heavy door.
Sebas knocked.
“Enter.”
A child’s curt voice answered.
“Excuse us.”
The door opened, revealing Fifth Prince Fleue standing against the light from the window.
Even in silhouette, Tauro could immediately tell that elven blood flowed in Prince Fleue’s veins.
His ears were pointed.
Unlike the slender elf of Tauro’s imagination, however, the prince was rather plump.
“So you really are a child. How old are you?”
The prince questioned him arrogantly the moment he entered.
“I’m ten.”
Tauro answered while thinking that the prince might be exactly the sort of person he disliked.
“You’re three whole years younger than I am.”
He’s trying to lord his age over me…!
At that point, Tauro stopped feeling merciful.
He endured the prince’s remarks and let them pass. Once the Reversi lesson began, however, he crushed him completely.
It might have been immature, but Tauro was a child too, so surely he could be forgiven.
Whatever Tauro thought, Prince Fleue couldn’t win no matter how many times they played and eventually looked ready to cry.
His retainers probably let him win most of the time.
“You’re far too strong! I hardly ever lose! What trick did you use?”
Apparently, the prince wanted to accuse him of cheating.
Tauro couldn’t very well make a prince cry, so he explained that there was a knack to the game.
“Is that how you defeated Prime Minister Barriera?”
The prince had evidently heard about their match the other day.
“I could hardly believe it when I heard that the prime minister, who defeated me, had lost. So there really is such a technique!”
It seemed Prime Minister Barriera had dealt the prince one of his few defeats.
Together with the other day’s events, this convinced Tauro that the prime minister showed children no mercy whatsoever.
“Very well, Satou. I want to beat Barriera. Teach me how!”
The prince’s speech remained imperious, but his demeanor had softened.
It seemed Tauro’s refusal to hold back had worked in his favor.
“All right. Let’s defeat the prime minister!”
An adult who showed no mercy to children was a common enemy, and the two boys quickly hit it off.
