Chapter 121: Night at the Adventurers’ Guild
　The lobby of the O’Circus branch of the Adventurers’ Guild was an enormous hall with a tavern attached.
　At that hour, many adventurers had already begun drinking.
　A low wall divided the building, with the reception counters occupying the right half and the tavern the left.
　Each side had its own entrance, although people could move freely between them inside the building.
　The tavern’s noise carried throughout the reception area, but the branch’s regulars were accustomed to it and paid no attention.
“I have visited large guild branches before, but this may be the noisiest one yet.”
　Aeris complained quietly to Tauro, already weary of the commotion.
“Let us submit our report quickly and find an inn.”
　Tauro nodded and approached one of the many open reception counters.
“I have confirmed the completion of your escort quest from Dansas to O’Circus. Here is your reward. As originally scheduled, will you also accept the return escort from O’Circus to Dansas in several days?”
　The receptionist consulted the information displayed on a thin, box-shaped magic device as she spoke.
“Yes, please.”
　Tauro nodded.
“Very well. I have confirmed the return escort quest for Black-Gold Wings.”
　While Tauro’s team completed the formalities, several local adventurers noticed the unusual composition of the four-person group.
“Did our branch have a team with two children in it?”
“Was there not one child in that family team, Family Hawks?”
“Then these four must be from somewhere else.”
“Maybe they’re a newly formed team.”
　The adventurers speculated loudly in the distinctive O’Circus accent, making no effort to keep their voices from carrying.
“…They look ready to drag us into their drinking. Let us leave before that happens.”
　Once the receptionist had recommended an inn, Tauro quietly urged his companions toward the exit.
　Aeris and the others immediately agreed.
“Hold on, you four. Come talk with us for a moment. Huh? Your tags say you’re an E-rank team! So you aren’t complete beginners.”
　A local adventurer stopped them, then stared in surprise at their identification tags.
“Oh! A young E-rank team!”
“That’s impressive. Come have a drink with us!”
“Don’t invite children to drink!”
　The increasingly cheerful adventurers crowded around them.
“Thank you, but we’re all tired after the long journey. Please excuse us for tonight.”
　Tauro declined politely.
“You’re the leader? You’re a confident little fellow. Where are you from?”
“We’re from Dansas, in Dareder County.”
　Tauro decided that answering a few questions might persuade them to let the group leave.
“Dareder? That’s deep in the countryside. Did your branch promote you quickly because it was short of adventurers?”
　Tauro and his companions didn’t immediately react, but the remark was undeniably rude.
　The O’Circus branch apparently suffered from a shortage of adventurers, which made advancement to E rank relatively easy there.
“There are so many requests in this city that we can choose whichever work we like. Since you’ll be here tomorrow, enjoy yourselves.”
“Actually, we’re only here temporarily for an escort quest.”
“Really? What miser hired a team of children as escorts?”
　The local adventurer sounded indignant on their behalf, but his words were also insulting to Black-Gold Wings.
　Aeris’s irritation was becoming obvious, and Tauro sensed that the conversation would soon turn unpleasant.
“My companions are exhausted, so we’ll take our leave.”
　He gently ushered Aeris away and led the group out of the guild.
“What was wrong with those people? Have they never learned basic manners? They were unbelievably rude!”
　Aeris vented her frustration as they walked toward the inn.
“They didn’t seem to mean any harm. Their manner of speaking is simply very direct.”
　The local culture reminded Tauro of an outspoken classmate from the Kansai region in his previous life. Explaining the comparison calmed Aeris somewhat.
“When you put it that way, I can understand them a little better.”
　Rumeya didn’t appear to have sensed any malice from the locals.
“Their manner is certainly startling, but some people may find it easier to deal with.”
　Shin had also been surprised, though he hadn’t formed a particularly bad impression.
“I’ve met people who speak like that before, so I’m accustomed to it. Someone hearing it for the first time would naturally be taken aback.”
　Tauro sympathized with Aeris while asking her to keep the city’s culture in mind during their stay.
