Chapter 104: A New Home
Tauro began constructing the roof with practiced ease.
Thanks to the dexterity bonus from [Precision], he had no trouble building it from wood.
“You really are skillful, Tauro,” Aeris said admiringly.
“Dexterity is the one stat where my score is high,” Tauro replied with a wry smile.
He finished the roof in no time, laid the floor, and fitted a proper door into the opening in the wall. The extension looked as though it had always been part of the house.
“And now it’s time for this.”
Tauro took a large lump of clay from [Magic Storage].
“Is that clay?” Aeris asked, puzzled about what he intended to do with it.
“I’m going to use it to make a toilet bowl with [Creation Magic].”
“A toy-let bowl?”
“You’ll understand once I make it.”
Tauro held the clay and cast [Creation Magic]. In a dazzling flash, it changed shape and became the familiar ceramic toilet bowl he remembered from his previous life.
Aeris had no idea what the white ceramic object was.
“What’s this?”
“A toilet.”
“Wait—you used [Creation Magic] on that?!”
Aeris was dumbfounded, but after Tauro installed it and explained how to use it, she was delighted.
Many private homes in this world had no toilets. People often dug holes in the woods or bushes outside, while in some places waste was simply discharged into a river. For women in particular, a sanitary toilet was a welcome luxury.
“But what happens when the waste accumulates? Is there anyone in this village who collects it?”
That was an important question.
“Normally, it would be pumped out from outside once it accumulated. But I can use [Purification]. If I cast it after each use, the waste will return to soil, so we’ll only need to remove some of that soil occasionally.”
“What?! You can use [Purification]?”
“That’s the part that surprises you?”
Her reaction wasn’t at all what Tauro had expected.
“Of course it is! I have the [Priest] skill. [Purification] is a high-level spell, and even I can’t use it yet!”
“A-anyway, that settles the toilet problem.”
Wanting to get the conversation back on track, Tauro forced the topic to a close and moved on.
In the garden, he had Aeris use earth magic to construct L-shaped walls beside the well, forming a small shed. Tauro added a roof and a door, then had her build a bathtub inside according to his instructions.
“A bath is a luxury. Filling it with water and heating that water are both difficult. Even if we build one, will we be able to use it often?” Aeris asked pragmatically.
“Leave that to me.”
Tauro took a gold coin, climbed into the empty tub, and used [Creation Magic] on its side. A golden magic circle appeared there.
“Now we only need to place a magic stone in this pocket to heat the water.”
Aeris hadn’t understood why Tauro had instructed her to make the recess, but now it made sense.
“Then all we have to do is supply the water!”
She began to fill the bath with water magic.
“That works for you, but ordinary people would have to fill it from the well, wouldn’t they?”
“Hm? Well, yes. Not everyone can use magic. But drawing all that water from a well is a lot of work.”
“That’s where this comes in.”
Tauro took a mana-recovery potion from [Magic Storage] and drank it. Then he brought out lumber, iron, and lumps of chromium and nickel that Aeris had never seen before.
Using those materials, he cast [Creation Magic] above the well. Light flooded the area as an intricate device took shape.
“What’s this?” Aeris asked, staring with fascination after turning away from the glare.
“A stainless-steel hand pump.”
“A what-steel hand pump?”
“A stainless-steel pump. It’s used to draw water. I designed it to work by hand or automatically when a magic stone is inserted.”
Tauro staggered as the spell drained his mana, then drank another mana-recovery potion.
“Are you all right?! You look pale. That’s enough for today—go rest,” Aeris urged.
“I’m fine. It’s only mana exhaustion. The potion will restore it, and my color will return soon.”
“Honestly! Don’t become accustomed to something like that. You make me worry!”
Aeris was exasperated with him. Once Tauro recovered and demonstrated the pump, however, she happily tried it and was delighted by how well it worked.
