Chapter 105: A New Life
Shortly after Rumeya moved, Tauro and Aeris transformed the house by adding the extension. When Shin and Rumeya came to see how they were doing, they were astonished by the changes.
“Make those for our house too—the toilet and the device on the well!”
After touring the rooms, the two immediately asked Tauro for their own.
Tauro consulted Aeris and agreed to build them. He needed her earth magic to make the walls, but he also asked because she opposed him pushing himself too hard.
“They’re our teammates, so this is still all right—but don’t overdo it,” Aeris warned him.
Thus began Tauro and Aeris’s life as housemates.
Tauro wondered whether much would change, but they had already lived under the same roof at the Dwarf Inn, so their routine remained largely the same. The main difference was that without an inn’s morning bustle, they could awaken peacefully and refreshed.
“Good morning, Aeris.”
Tauro, who had risen first, greeted Aeris when she emerged.
“Good morning, Tauro.”
Aeris was wearing pajamas. Tauro was accustomed to seeing her in a dress at the inn, but this was his first time seeing her dressed for bed.
“It’s unusual to see you in pajamas.”
At his candid observation, Aeris suddenly became self-conscious and blushed.
“You’re the only one here. There was no reason to change clothes first.”
Tauro interpreted this as her finding it tiresome to be overly formal around a teammate.
“You’ll want breakfast, right?” he asked, regaining his composure.
“Yes, but where are we going to eat?”
They were no longer at an inn, so no one would prepare food for them. Aeris considered several places in the village.
“Nowhere. I’ll make it, so wait a moment. Is there anything you dislike?” Tauro asked matter-of-factly.
“What? You can cook?!”
Aeris had no idea that Tauro had invented many of the village’s specialty dishes. She had assumed the food he produced from [Magic Storage] was merely something he had bought and preserved.
“Of course. Cooking is one of my specialties.”
Tauro took plates and cups from [Magic Storage] and arranged them on the table. Then he went to the stove, lit it with fire spirit magic, placed a frying pan over it, set a cutting board beside it, and began chopping vegetables and meat.
While Aeris marveled at his practiced movements, Tauro noisily fried thin slices of meat. The addition of seasoning filled the room with a delicious aroma.
The food was ready in no time. Tauro transferred it to a large platter and placed it on the table.
“It’s a simple breakfast, but help yourself. Put whatever you like between slices of bread.”
Tauro pulled out a chair for the still-standing Aeris, who hurriedly sat. He took his own seat and pressed his hands together.
“Itadakimasu.”
He gestured for Aeris to begin eating as well.
“What does ‘itadakimasu’ mean?”
“Hmm… It can have several meanings, but I use it as a greeting of gratitude to the people who produced the food we’re about to receive.”
“I see. Then… itadakimasu.”
Aeris imitated Tauro and pressed her hands together.
After the meal, Aeris took responsibility for washing the dishes. Tauro had intended to use [Purification], but she insisted on doing it herself.
Aeris could cast [Clean]. Unlike [Purification], it only cleaned surfaces and couldn’t eliminate germs, but using it before germs multiplied would remove their source. [Clean] was more than adequate; Tauro’s [Purification] would be excessive for ordinary cleaning.
Contrary to Tauro’s expectations, however, Aeris didn’t use magic. She intended to wash everything by hand.
Since that was her choice, Tauro decided to watch over her warmly.
Aeris struggled with the unfamiliar task, and her hands occasionally slipped, nearly sending a plate to the floor. Each time, Tauro watched nervously. By the time she finished without breaking anything, the repeated scares had left him mentally exhausted.
