Chapter 18: The Holy Knights of the Holy Order

Dawn Kingdom, capital city Junhui, the largest and wealthiest metropolis in the entire realm.

Today, all of Junhui was bustling with excitement. A legendary and highly respected order of knights was about to arrive, drawing massive crowds into the streets eager for a glimpse.

At the city’s southern gate, the doors slowly opened. Trumpets blared from atop the walls, welcoming the incoming guests. The main boulevard leading to the royal palace was packed with onlookers. Even rooftops were crowded with spectators.

“They’re here!”

Everyone’s eyes were fixed on the distant silhouettes slowly approaching. Gradually, a mighty formation of soldiers appeared.

Clad uniformly in white and gold full-body armor, their synchronized steps resounded in unison. The sheer discipline and heroic aura of the group left the crowd awestruck. Not a single knight glanced at the cheering masses—their gaze was fixed straight ahead.

A white flag bearing a four-pointed star fluttered among them, unmistakably revealing their identity: the Holy Knights of the Holy Order.

This holy order had set out from the Holy Kingdom of Caleb, birthplace of the Lumichaean Faith, and after a long journey had finally reached Junhui City.

Of course, most of the holy knights were still encamped outside the city walls. Only a select elite—fewer than a hundred—were permitted to enter the city to audience with the king.

“Look! That white horse has wings!”

“Pfft, that’s a pegasus, you know—only the Holy Kingdom has those rare mounts.”

“That female knight riding the pegasus—she’s stunning!”

The crowd stirred as they noticed a white-winged pegasus and its rider leading the formation.

At the front of the procession, aside from the Grand Commander Orthofen, there were five of the Holy Order’s top-ranking knights.

But no one drew more attention than the woman at the center: Angelica Sia, riding the pegasus. With her golden hair and sapphire eyes, her beauty alone was breathtaking.

At that moment, another knight rode up beside Angelica and whispered,

“You really know how to steal the spotlight.”

Angelica replied calmly,

“If you’re jealous, you’re welcome to try riding a pegasus yourself.”

“Come on now, everyone knows only pure maidens can ride one. If I so much as laid a finger on that horse, it’d probably kick my face in!”

“Ahem!”

At the sound of Commander Orthofen’s cough, the knight instantly fell silent and backed off from Angelica, riding forward respectfully.

Once inside the inner city, there were no more commoners. Outside the royal palace, several nobles of Dawn Kingdom stood waiting.

The knights halted. The leading paladins dismounted and handed their reins to aides. Orthofen stepped forward and, following protocol, announced their mission:

“I am Orthofen, Grand Commander of the Holy Order. In accordance with the Winter Accord, I’ve brought the Paladins to aid Dawn Kingdom in its battle against the undead scourge.”

A balding, middle-aged noble stepped forward and replied respectfully,

“We welcome your arrival. Commander Orthofen, please follow me to meet His Majesty. The rest of your men will be escorted by Baron Cole, and will be treated with the utmost hospitality.”

He gestured toward a young man beside him as he mentioned Baron Cole.

“Much obliged.”

With that, Orthofen followed the noble into the palace while the rest of the holy knights followed Baron Cole eastward.

In the royal council chamber, over thirty nobles in ornate attire stood on either side. At the center, on a grand throne, sat an old man with a stern expression and a golden crown—the King of Dawn.

As Orthofen entered with the guide, all the nobles turned to scrutinize him in unison—a gaze he had long grown used to. Calmly, he approached the throne and placed his hand over his chest in salute.

“Your Majesty, I, Orthofen, Grand Commander of the Holy Order, bring greetings from His Holiness the Pope of the Caleb Theocracy.”

“Mm. Be sure to convey my regards to His Holiness as well.”

“Yes, Your Majesty.”

Thofen then began reporting in detail how the Holy Order would assist Morninglight Kingdom during the upcoming winter. The King posed a few follow-up questions.

“Speaking of which, last winter the walls of Bianshu Town were breached by undead creatures. Thankfully, the holy knights were able to drive them off. I wonder—will the same happen again this year?”

A noble suddenly brought up the matter, looking visibly concerned.

In response, another noble said nonchalantly.

“There’s absolutely no need to worry. Even if Bianshu Town can’t hold, the holy knights can always retreat to Dongsheng Fortress. After all, before the walls of Bianshu were constructed, it was Dongsheng Fortress that held off the undead.”

“Besides.”

Another noble added.

“The scale of undead at Bianshu can’t even compare to that at Chisha Fortress. Dongsheng Fortress can handle it easily.”

“That’s true.”

“Quite reasonable.”

The other nobles began whispering among themselves, most of them agreeing with the ones who said there was nothing to worry about.

“Commander Thofen, what is your view?” the king asked Orl.

After a moment of thought, he replied.

“Your Majesty, I believe we should leave it to the commander stationed there to make the judgment. In any case, holding the small breach on the eastern frontier shouldn’t be an issue.”

“Very well. We’ll go with Commander Thofen’s recommendation.”

With the matter of military support settled, the king extended an invitation:

“This evening, I’ve arranged a send-off banquet in honor of the Holy Order. I hope you will all attend.”

“We certainly will.”

Thofen responded.

Just as he was about to take his leave, a sudden voice interrupted.

“Wait a moment!”

Everyone turned to look. The speaker was none other than Prince Legois Wells, the eldest prince of the Dawn Kingdom.

Tall and broad-shouldered with a rugged appearance, Legois stepped forward, bowed to the king, and made his request:

“Father, please allow me to accompany the holy knights to Chisha Fortress. I too wish to contribute to the fight against evil.”

“That’s out of the question.”

The king refused firmly.

“War is no game. Chisha Fortress is too dangerous in winter.”

“Father, I understand that war is no game. That’s why I’ve trained in martial arts since childhood, and even studied magic, which I once disliked. My current strength has already been acknowledged by the Knight Commander—I’m confident I can make a difference on the battlefield.”

Legois refused to back down and even cited the support of Hughes Bandel, the kingdom’s strongest knight, who was well-known and stationed permanently at Chisha Fortress.

“It’s still too dangerous.”

The king replied, clearly worried. Though he knew his eldest son was powerful, he couldn’t bear the thought of losing him—he was too old to withstand such a blow.

“Father.”

At that moment, Prince White Wells, the third prince, stepped forward. With his lean face and perpetual, unreadable smile, he always gave off a somewhat sinister air.

“Chisha Fortress is a stronghold and since Brother’s strength has been endorsed by the Knight Commander, there’s no harm in letting him go. Besides, I’m sure the kingdom’s knights and the holy knights of the Holy Kingdom will protect him well.”

Legois gave White a strange look—he rarely spoke on his behalf, so his support now was unexpected.

“Commander Thofen, what is your opinion?”

The king asked again, this time hoping he would emphasize the dangers and help him reject the request.

But to the king’s surprise, he replied.

“If the Crown Prince wishes to fight the undead at Chisha Fortress, we will ensure his safety is not threatened.”

Several nobles immediately voiced their support for the prince’s request, saying things like, “It will temper him,” and “His presence will boost morale.”

“Enough! I’ll allow it.”

Faced with such momentum, the king could no longer refuse and had no choice but to agree. Still concerned, he added,

“Once you’re there, make sure to protect yourself.”

“Yes, Father.”

The Crown Prince replied joyfully.
