Chapter 15 – Signing the Contract
“Miss Fanny, I’m afraid I can’t hire you under the terms of the commission.”
Owen said with deliberate seriousness.
“W-What…?”
Hearing that, Fanny lowered her head in disappointment. Although she had mentally prepared herself for rejection before coming, it still hit hard when it actually happened.
“But..”
Owen hadn’t finished his sentence.
“if you’re willing to stay in Bianshu Town, I’d like to sign a long-term contract with you. Although the short-term pay won’t be as high as the commission, it will still be substantial—and most importantly, stable. In return, I’ll arrange magic lessons to help you make up for your weaknesses.”
Yes—Owen had already decided to keep Fanny by signing a contract, so he could train her with peace of mind.
“Really?”
Fanny’s face lit up immediately.
“I’m willing!”
“Eh?”
Owen was momentarily stunned—he hadn’t expected her to agree so quickly. Signing a contract was a serious matter, and most people usually asked for a few days to think it over.
Of course, Owen didn’t know that Fanny had come to Bianshu Town with a bit of a “now or never” mindset. If staying meant a stable job and a place to live, she was ready to accept nearly any condition that wasn’t unreasonable.
“Then let’s sign the contract right now!”
Fanny urged him eagerly, as if afraid Owen might suddenly change his mind.
“Uh… Ryan.”
Owen turned to his butler Ryan, who nodded and immediately went to the study to prepare the necessary materials.
After spreading out a blank parchment scroll, Owen picked up a quill and drafted the contract on the spot. Once finished, he handed it to Fanny for review.
After confirming the terms, both parties signed and stamped their fingerprints—officially establishing their contract relationship.
Everything had gone so smoothly that Owen couldn’t help but feel suspicious. If he hadn’t already confirmed Fanny’s magic level using the sensing orb, he would’ve thought he was signing a contract with a scammer.
Just as he was about to issue new instructions to Ryan, a young voice suddenly cut in.
“Can I eat it now?”
It was Fanny’s sister, Lilica, who was staring wide-eyed at the cake on the table, practically drooling—but too scared to touch it.
Before entering the castle, Fanny had warned Lilica not to touch anything, fearing they couldn’t afford to pay for damages if anything broke.
“Lilica…”
Fanny tugged at her sister to remind her to behave, then turned apologetically toward Owen.
“I’m really sorry, my sister’s still young and doesn’t know better.”
“It’s alright. That’s just how kids are—I’ve seen plenty like her.”
Owen shrugged it off casually, then gave Lilica a gentle smile.
“Of course you can eat it. It was prepared for you.”
“You’re such a nice big brother!”
Lilica’s eyes sparkled with joy. She immediately beamed and reached out for the cake, happily digging in without any concern for manners.
“Hey, slow down. No one’s going to steal it from you.”
Fanny leaned over and brushed the hair away from her sister’s mouth so she wouldn’t accidentally eat it.
Once Lilica was patting her tummy in satisfaction, Owen finally instructed Ryan to arrange their lodging.
Before leaving the reception room, Owen told Fanny to come to the castle the next morning to begin magic lessons. If she wasn’t comfortable leaving Lilica alone, she could either bring her along or leave her in the care of the small church in town.
Under Ryan’s guidance, Fanny and her sister left the lord’s castle.
At the castle gate, Ryan informed the guards about Fanny’s new status—starting tomorrow, she would be allowed to enter and exit freely. Then, he led the sisters to the local church to show them the way and handle some matters.
Finally, they arrived at a renovated wooden house—their new home. It was furnished with basic furniture and only needed a bit of cleaning before moving in.
“This really is our place? It’s amazing!”
Compared to their previous tiny, broken-down shack, this house was like a dream. Fanny could hardly believe it. What’s more, according to the contract, rent was waived for the first year—she and her sister could stay worry-free.
“Is that so?”
Ryan stroked his bearded chin.
“Funny—at first, the master was worried that offering this kind of housing might upset a mage.”
“There’s nothing to be upset about! I’m already more than grateful.”
Fanny said sincerely.
“If you’re satisfied, I believe the master will be very pleased.”
Ryan said with a smile.
He then handed a key to Fanny and added.
“From this moment on, this house belongs to you.”
After Ryan left, Fanny and her sister immediately unlocked the door and entered the house assigned by the lord. Compared to their previous place, this one was far more spacious. Lilica was so excited that she rolled around on the floor, not minding the dirt at all.
Fanny spent the entire afternoon cleaning and organizing the house, completely wearing herself out. That night, she held her sister in her arms, and the two of them quickly fell asleep in the same bed.
Perhaps it was because she had signed a contract with the lord, but all of Fanny’s previous anxiety had vanished, and she slept soundly and peacefully.
“Sister Anri… thank you,” she murmured in her sleep.
Whether it was because she felt too relaxed or was just too exhausted, Fanny ended up oversleeping.
She had clearly promised to be at the castle early the next morning for magic lessons, yet she only woke up when Owen’s personal guard came knocking at the door.
Messing up on the very first day left Fanny in a panic. She hurried to wake up her sister, and the two quickly got themselves ready. After dropping Lilica off at the church for care, she rushed off to the castle.
She had made this arrangement because she was worried Lilica might unintentionally do something inappropriate and offend the lord. Just the day before, when her sister suddenly asked to eat the cake, Fanny had nearly had a heart attack. Thankfully, Owen had been magnanimous and didn’t blame them—but who knew if he would be so understanding next time?
Still, she needed to worry about herself first. What kind of punishment would she face for standing up the lord on the very first day?
Nervously, Fanny entered the castle. Led by a maid, she arrived at the third-floor study, where she had heard Owen often worked.
After the maid announced her arrival, Fanny stepped into the study, her heart pounding—only to see Owen looking at her calmly.
“Looks like you slept well last night. That’s good.”
Truthfully, Owen had been quite upset at first. After waiting for so long and not seeing her, he felt like his time had been wasted.
But after sending someone to fetch her, he had calmed down and reflected. Perhaps he had been too eager and hadn’t taken her circumstances into consideration.
After all, the two of them had just arrived in Bianshu Town the day before—they were likely exhausted from travel. He should have let them rest for a few days before beginning lessons.
“I’m really sorry, Lord Owen. I overslept. I promise it won’t happen again.”
Fanny said, bowing deeply.
She didn’t believe for a second that Owen wasn’t angry. Maybe he was just pretending to be nice on the surface, while inwardly seething—that kind of person was the scariest.
“There’s no need to apologize. I was the one who didn’t think it through. You just arrived in Bianshu Town yesterday—I should’ve let you rest a few days first.”
Huh? So he really wasn’t mad? Fanny wondered if this lord might actually be even kinder than she had imagined.
“No need to rest! I want to start my magic lessons as soon as possible and contribute to Lord Owen’s cause.”
“Not to me—to Bianshu Town.”
Owen corrected her.
“Huh?”
Fanny was confused. Wasn’t Bianshu Town Owen’s territory? Was there really a difference?
