Chapter 15: The Will of the Residents

“Hmm, morning…”

I'd been working on the gun with Bowman and Vigna. After two days of all-nighters, we finally finished the prototype. The potatoes are really good. I didn't get sleepy at all, even though we were up all night! It was worth the effort and although the quality was not as good as the gun Souzi left behind, I think it was at least up to the level of actual combat. I let out an exhale of admiration as I look at the tubular rifle and handgun made of mithril alloy. This is the first weapon mass-produced by the Asgardians that combines my knowledge, Bowman's technology and Vigna's magic. This weapon will protect the people.... and kill the enemy.

“I told them I would take full responsibility.”

 They insisted that since this was made by the three of us, the glory and sin it would cause would be ours.... They were ready for this...

As I look at the two of them sleeping with all their might, I feel grateful. I pull a blanket over Vigna. Bowman, well, he seems sturdy and won't catch a cold.

I'm going to grab my rifle and head out.

“I'm coming with you.....”

“Get some sleep, you're pretty tired.”

“You're tired, too.... And I want to see what it can do.”

When I tried to go outside, Vigna grabbed me by the hem of my shirt. It seems she’s following me, even though she’s sleepy.

And the heck with that power! I tried to shake her off, but she wouldn't budge. I gave up and went outside with her.

“So.... how does this rifle work?"

"Hahaha, I can't help it. I'll explain it to you. You stupid muscle brain.”

"fufufu, it's been a while since I've heard that. Well, continue, Grace.”

“What's with that reaction? Did you eat something weird?”

“Huh, I'll crush you.”

The usual came, but it’s better to be cursed. I explained with my usual tension.

“I'm sorry for getting carried away Vigna-sama! This weapon is called a rifle and when you pull the trigger, the fire magic in the magic stone inside explodes, sending mithril bullets flying. Unlike the one I have, you have to load each bullet one by one, but the speed is incomparable to bow and arrow and above all, it doesn't use any power. Well, there’s a certain amount of recoil, but..... like this."

I pulled the trigger of the rifle in my hand and with the recoil, the bullet shot out and pierced the earthen wall. After this, it’d be better to go through various experiments, such as whether there’s a problem with shooting several shots.

I hope so..... I was worried and she grabbed my hand to cheer me up. What’s this? Was she always so kind?

Her warmth cheered me up and I waited for the people to gather.

“So… it’s highly possible that the recent wyvern attack was a man-made attack by someone targeting this territory. It’s likely that the territory will be attacked by someone after this."

My words were met with a murmur by the assembled members, the early inhabitants of the territory including Agni and Neil. 

That's right, we've just been attacked by monsters and there's a chance that something similar will happen in the future. It was understandable that they were surprised. I want them to spare me too.

“So here's the thing. I've decided to create a variety of weapons to protect this city. Vigna and Galatea won’t be enough. The ones who can fight will be trained to fight in addition to their regular duties. We'll be asking some of the non-combatants like Noel to nurse them as well. That's why..."

They were concentrating on my words, trying not to miss a single word. I continued with my words, capturing their gazes with all my might.

“If you don't want to get involved in the fighting, feel free to let me know, the knowledge you obtained here must be kept a secret, but I'll give you some money and food....”

"That's not true Grace-sama! This is our village now, too. We're not going to run away now. Thank you for reaching out to us who had no place to stay. It’s not over yet.  Right guys."

“That's right, we haven't even finished thanking you for giving us land and farming tools. In an emergency, I'd fight with my hoe too.”

“And besides, it's not every day you see a lord interested in farming. I like to see you working hard to grow crops, so please don't say something so lonely.”

"Yes, Master! I’ve yet to repay you for all the knowledge you’ve shared with me as a mere commoner. And.... you'll let me help you with your inventions, won't you?”

“ I still need to practice with my sword and my sister has also been taken care of. And I get rewarded by Vigna-san. I'm learning a lot of things.”

"Everyone....."

I couldn’t say anything to the unexpected words. I'm just a lord trying to develop this territory… and yet, I've never heard anyone say this much about me.......

“I told you, they like you and they like this territory.”

“You’re right, Vigna. Okay, we will now decide on a schedule that includes combat training and nursing. Also, you guys said that, but if anyone wants to get out of here, feel free to say so!”

"Ooooh, we're going to protect our village!”

Everyone cheered at my words. They're even better than I expected. That’s why I want to protect them. In order to do that, we need to mass-produce guns, expand our armaments and train for combat…

“Master, I'm back. I know who the attacker is."

“Galatea.... Welcome back. You’ve found them?"

While we were making noise, a slightly dirty-looking Galatea returned. Is it the identity of the assailant? I’ll listen to what she has to report.
