Chapter 99: Creation Magic (Weak)

It was the middle of the night when the members of the D-rank rescue party reached Dansas, so they immediately dispersed after agreeing to make their report the following day.

Bob hurried home as well. He had a feeling Momo would be too worried to sleep while waiting for him.

Sure enough, a light was burning inside the house. Momo was still awake.

When Bob opened the door, Momo rose from her chair and embraced him without a word. Bob held her tightly in return.

“I’m sorry I worried you,” he apologized sincerely.

“…It’s all right. You’re alive,” Momo answered without releasing him.

“…But…”

“But?”

“…You smell. Go wash off your sweat first.”

Catfolk liked to keep themselves clean. Bob had been unable to wash properly for several days, and Momo delivered her complaint with a tearful laugh.

The next morning, the four young adventurers went to the guild together to report their quest’s completion.

They received the reward for defeating three orcs, but the achievement didn’t count toward promotion because orcs were normally targets for adventurers in the D-rank range.

Under guild rules, defeating a target above one’s rank wasn’t considered in promotion evaluations because of the danger involved. If it counted, more adventurers would take reckless risks and the casualty rate would rise.

Aeris looked dissatisfied, but rules were rules.

Since this had been an emergency quest, the guild paid them generously, which delighted Shin and Rumeya. It was also their first quest since reaching E-minus rank, making it especially meaningful to them.

“All right! Let’s rent a house and bring our girlfriends here!” Rumeya suggested to Shin.

“Good idea. I’ve saved a fair amount, and with what we can earn on E-rank quests, I can afford to bring mine over.”

Tauro and Aeris exchanged glances.

“You have girlfriends?!” they exclaimed together.

“Yeah. Rumeya and I both have girlfriends back in our home villages. We haven’t seen them in a long time, though,” Shin explained.

“…I see. I’m only eleven, but somehow I feel like I’ve lost…” Tauro muttered.

“Hahaha! You’re still a child, Tauro. I’m nineteen, and Shin is eighteen. It would hardly be strange for us to have girlfriends.”

Rumeya clapped Tauro on the shoulder.

“Exactly. You’ve got plenty of time,” Shin agreed.

“Damn, I can feel the composure of adulthood!”

For the first time, Tauro truly felt the difference in their ages.

Shin and Rumeya took the day off to search for a house. Tauro also took the day off, claiming he had something to do.

Aeris followed him.

“…Why are you following me, Aeris?”

“You’re going to do something, aren’t you?”

“…Yes. That’s why I said I had an errand.”

“Right. That’s why I’m coming with you.”

Her eyes shone with curiosity.

“…Well, I only learned a new spell and want to test it. It’s nothing important, okay?” Tauro emphasized.

“Really? But isn’t your skill a trash ski—no, a garbled skill?”

“You just said ‘trash,’ didn’t you?”

“…No.”

Aeris looked away.

“…Whatever.”

Tauro started walking, hoping that explanation would shake her off, but Aeris continued following him.

“…Fine. But do you swear you won’t tell anyone?”

“…? Yes, I swear.”

Tauro sighed and went to the edge of the village, where there was no sign of anyone else. Then, forgetting Aeris was watching, he began his experiment.

If [Creation Magic (Weak)] worked as he imagined, it ought to be extraordinary.

The “Weak” part bothered him, but he would understand it once he tried the spell.

“[Creation Magic]!”

Tauro pictured what he wanted and cast the spell.

Nothing happened.

“…Huh?”

“…?”

Aeris stared blankly as well.

Wasn’t it supposed to create something from nothing?

The result was nothing like Tauro had expected. He tried again and again, but the spell didn’t respond at all.

“…Are you all right?” Aeris asked as he struggled.

Maybe it can’t create something from nothing.

After yet another failure, Tauro decided to test a different possibility. He took a piece of wood from [Magic Storage].

Aeris tilted her head, but Tauro ignored her reaction and continued his experiment.

“[Creation Magic]!”

Holding the wood, Tauro visualized what he wanted and cast the spell.

A dazzling light flashed, and the wood transformed into a seamless wooden chair.

“What?!”

Aeris stared in astonishment.

“Isn’t this the legendary alchemical magic?!”

Tauro had no idea whether it was legendary, but he was delighted to have finally succeeded.
