Chapter 76: The Popular G-Rank Quest
One day, a G-rank quest was posted on the bulletin board in the guild lobby.
G-rank quests fell outside the normal ranking system. They were also known as “errand quests” for amateur adventurers or “penalty quests” for people who had broken guild rules, so hardly any adventurers usually bothered to read them.
That day’s G-rank quest, however, had drawn a crowd.
Tauro went over to see what all the commotion was about.
“Renovate a vacant building for a guild-run tavern.”
That was what the notice said.
“I’m pretty handy. Maybe I’ll take it. I want that tavern open as soon as possible!”
“Yeah! Until now, we could only drink at the inn during certain hours. Having a tavern would be great!”
“Who repaired this guild building? That was recent, wasn’t it? Get them to do the tavern too!”
The adventurers who wanted to drink in the middle of the day were making quite a fuss.
Tauro was entirely in favor of a guild-run tavern, so he decided to accept the quest.
The child adventurer who was becoming famous around the guild had taken the job, inspiring other adventurers who were confident in their craftsmanship to sign up as well.
Shin and Rumeya followed suit, declaring that if Tauro was doing it, they would too.
The quota was filled almost immediately, and the tavern-opening project was underway in no time.
The village had plentiful timber, including good-quality wood that could be obtained cheaply, so materials were no problem.
Renovation began under the direction of Branch Manager Chloe—or, more accurately, with Tauro giving instructions behind the scenes.
The site was a large, abandoned single-story tavern across from the guild.
Tauro’s plan was to rebuild it as a two-story structure.
The ground floor would be the tavern, while the second floor would provide lodgings for adventurers. The rooms would be larger than those at the existing inn, and the higher lodging fee would reflect that, but there should be more than enough demand.
The existing inn’s rooms were barely large enough for sleeping, making them unsuitable for long stays.
Adventurers staying for extended periods often pooled their money to rent a house, or rented a warehouse in which to store their belongings.
Tauro himself had been wondering whether it was time to rent a house.
His [Magic Storage] meant luggage wasn’t a problem, but the inn’s thin walls carried sound, so any work he did in his room risked disturbing the other guests.
Even when he worked in the inn’s yard, he had to be mindful of the time.
With his own circumstances in mind, Tauro designed the new building with careful attention to soundproofing.
Besides, lodging would make the project far more profitable than a tavern alone. There was no reason to leave the upper space unused.
The adventurers with construction experience were astonished when they saw the plans.
The two-story design surprised them, as did the decision to make the upper floor into lodgings.
“We’re definitely moving in here…!”
Their thoughts seemed almost audible even without [Presence Detection].
The adventurers working on the project had been confident in their dexterity, but watching Tauro work nearly destroyed that confidence.
He cut and planed every piece of wood with millimeter precision, then handed it over exactly as specified in the plans.
Under the branch manager’s instructions, the others handled the assembly. Every piece fit perfectly, and the intricate joints required no nails.
It didn’t take long for everyone to conclude that Tauro must either be a carpenter’s son or possess a highly developed [Woodworking] skill.
After the first day’s work, the adventurers asked Chloe who Tauro really was. She naturally refused to disclose personal information.
In truth, Chloe herself wanted to know.
A test with a magic tool had confirmed that Tauro possessed only a single garbled-text skill.
Garbled-text skills were regarded as the very definition of uselessness.
That made it seem likely that Tauro had worked harder than anyone else to acquire his present abilities without the help of a skill.
Because no one knew what a garbled-text skill actually did, its owner couldn’t even work deliberately to improve it.
Yet Tauro was producing remarkable results under those adverse conditions.
Chloe could only admire him.
When the adventurers working with him asked about his skills, Tauro honestly replied that he possessed only one garbled-text skill.
Even if he lied, [Appraisal Obstruction (Extreme)] would keep an [Appraisal] from exposing him. Still, the advantage of a garbled-text skill was that it spared him from having to explain his mysterious abilities at all.
After hearing his answer, the adventurers apparently reached the same conclusion as Chloe. One after another, they patted Tauro on the shoulder and encouraged him.
“You’re working hard, kid.”
“You’re amazing.”
