Chapter 75: Appointed Branch Manager
Everyone was surprised when Chloe the receptionist was announced as the new branch manager.
Tauro was surprised too, but Chloe herself was the most surprised of all.
She was kind but calm and collected, so people often mistook her for being cold. In truth, she was just as emotional as anyone else.
While Tauro was helping Chloe with paperwork, she turned to him with an anxious expression, nearly in tears.
“What am I going to do, Tauro…?”
“Please calm down. This is just an extension of the work you’ve already been doing. Now you can leave reception to the new employee and the paperwork to Assistant Branch Manager Shiroi. You’ll only need to make the final adjustments, so it should actually be much easier than before.”
Tauro tried to reassure her.
“But the responsibility…”
Chloe’s anxiety didn’t subside.
“You’ve managed everything just fine until now. You can keep doing what you’ve always done. The only difference is that instead of asking adventurers for help, you’ll now be able to give them instructions.”
“But…”
“You used to be an adventurer yourself, so you’ll be fine.”
“That was only for a few months, and I never made it past F rank…!”
“When you don’t know something, ask everyone and talk it over with them. If you do that, most problems can be solved somehow. You don’t need to shoulder everything by yourself.”
Feeling encouraged by Tauro’s words, Chloe nodded.
“All right. I’ll give it a try.”
And so Chloe accepted the appointment, and the Adventurers’ Guild in Dansas Village gained a new branch manager.
Although Chloe was now the branch manager, most of her work remained unchanged.
Sometimes she still worked at reception, and sometimes she handled paperwork.
She occasionally traveled to larger guild branches in town for meetings, but otherwise things were much the same as before.
The most noticeable difference was that she now wore trousers and other casual clothes instead of the staff uniform, along with a badge on her left breast identifying her as the branch manager.
The Dansas Branch of the Adventurers’ Guild adopted a basic policy requiring adventurers operating from the branch to include potions among their equipment.
The aim was to reduce the fatality rate on quests.
Dansas Village had an abundant supply of medicinal herbs, so potions could be produced more cheaply than elsewhere. Providing inexpensive potions wouldn’t only reduce deaths, but also keep injuries from worsening and prevent the branch’s fighting strength from declining.
To achieve that, it was important to streamline the pharmacists’ potion-refining process so they could produce them in large quantities.
If the branch could supply adventurers at lower prices, everyone would benefit.
Quite a few adventurers at the branch had already been saved by potions, so there was little opposition.
Those who did object were people who had never suffered a serious injury. Even they couldn’t argue too strongly once they learned that some of the branch’s most famous adventurers owed their lives to potions.
Using her authority as branch manager, Chloe also promoted Bob to D-, Tauro to F+, and Shin and Rumeya to F rank.
The promotions rewarded their performance during the Killer Ant extermination quest.
First, the colony had been far larger than the advance report suggested. Second, it had included a queen. The four of them had defeated the ants quickly and saved the village while keeping damage to a minimum.
Personally, Chloe would have liked to promote all four of them by two ranks, but guild rules made that impossible.
She had considered citing their earlier defeat of the Goblin Knight and Goblin Sorcerer as well, but that case had already been processed and couldn’t be counted again.
Even so, the four adventurers regarded the promotions as an unexpected windfall.
Bob in particular had only recently been promoted to E+, and reaching D- wasn’t simply a matter of completing enough quests.
Candidates were screened to determine whether they deserved promotion, with their character, aptitude, and contributions to the guild all taken into account.
That was the barrier separating the E-rank band of ordinary adventurers from the D-rank band of skilled adventurers.
Many adventurers remained at E rank until they retired.
Bob had satisfied every requirement.
In particular, he had contributed greatly to the village and worked hard to improve the adventurers’ reputation, so no one opposed his promotion.
Tauro, Shin, and Rumeya were still in the F-rank band of novice adventurers, where the requirements were less strict. Their promotions reflected the branch’s expectations for their promising futures.
Shin and Rumeya were delighted.
They had earned rapid promotions simply by scattering powder, and they were grateful they had followed Tauro.
Tauro, however, remained calm.
He wanted to establish a proper fighting style for the two of them before they advanced into the E-rank band.
