Chapter 61: The Cursed Totem
Bob regained consciousness because Tauro had splashed a potion over him.
He must have been drenched because Tauro had used so many precious potions on him.
Even as Bob thought about that, Tauro drew the Goblin Sorcerer’s attention and rolled across the ground, moving away from him in the opposite direction.
When Bob looked, he saw the Goblin Knight’s corpse lying in front of him.
He had no memory of what had happened. Had Tauro killed it?
It looked as though its throat had been pierced with a single thrust.
Wait, this was no time to analyze the situation.
He had to help Tauro.
Bob got to his feet and beheaded the Goblin Sorcerer, which had its back to him as it prepared to blast Tauro with fire magic.
“Bob, you saved me.”
Tauro ran over and thanked him with a smile.
“No, I’m the one who was saved. Thank you.”
The exhausted Bob managed a weary smile.
“Bob, after you collect the right ears and magic stones from these two, could you report what happened to the guild?”
“Y-yeah. What are you going to do, Tauro?”
“I thought I’d take a look inside the shrine.”
“Will you be all right on your own?”
“Yes. If I encounter any danger, I’ll run. I won’t take any risks.”
“All right. Then I’ll return to the village after collecting everything.”
With that, the two parted ways for the time being.
Tauro arrived at the shrine.
“There doesn’t seem to be anyone inside…”
Peering in from the entrance, he saw numerous dark spirits gathered in the darkness.
Since gaining the ability to see spirits, Tauro had never seen so many gathered in one place. Although [Presence Detection] sensed nothing, he remained vigilant.
The interior was dark, so he used spirit magic to summon a light spirit and asked it to illuminate the area.
Now he could walk safely without worrying about his footing.
As he ventured deeper inside, an awful stench assaulted his nose.
Animal carcasses lay scattered everywhere. They were probably the source of the smell.
However, this couldn’t be the acrid odor Bob had detected.
The farther Tauro went, the more numerous the dark spirits became and the thicker the darkness grew.
The light spirit’s glow and the dark spirits seemed to push against each other within the same space, creating a strange sight. Since they appeared harmless, Tauro continued onward until he reached a dead end.
There stood a stone altar with a round stone resting upon it.
The dark spirits clustered thickly around the area, but Tauro could see that they were keeping their distance from the stone.
In front of the altar stood a totem assembled from various bones, probably erected by the goblins for some kind of curse ritual.
“For now, it’s filthy and it stinks, so I’ll clean this thing and dispose of it first.”
Tauro cast [Purification], the spell he normally used to clean his body, on the totem.
The totem vanished as though it had turned to sand and scattered on the wind.
“Was it cursed…? I’m glad I didn’t touch it…!”
Tauro panicked for a moment, but relaxed when nothing happened.
“The animal carcasses stink too, so I’ll clean the entire shrine with [Purification].”
He widened the spell’s area, focused, and cast [Purification].
That produced an unexpected response.
The dark spirits moved slightly closer to the round stone on the altar.
“Hm…? Are you all interested in that stone?”
Tauro addressed the dark spirits.
Naturally, there was no answer, but as a test, he cast [Purification] on the stone itself.
The black spheres of light that were the dark spirits moved a little closer again.
It seemed the spirits wanted to approach the round stone.
Tauro therefore cast [Purification] repeatedly.
However, after casting it too many times, he exhausted his mana and nearly collapsed, dropping to his knees.
“Sorry, but I can’t do any more today.”
Overcome by intense fatigue, Tauro drank a bottle of mana recovery potion.
“I’ll come back tomorrow.”
With that, he left the shrine and headed back to the village.
If he stayed any longer, Bob would worry and come looking for him.
As Tauro made his way toward the entrance, he collected the rubbish in his magic storage. Once outside, he emptied it into a single pile beside the shrine and set off for the village.
