Chapter 54: With No Destination in Mind…
After being inactive for several months, Tauro had to start over at G-rank.
Even Leo, head of the Adventurers’ Guild’s Saisi branch, could do nothing about it.
Those were the guild’s rules.
An adventurer who went more than two months without completing a quest was demoted, while one inactive for more than five months lost their membership entirely.
Only first-rate adventurers of B-rank and above were exempt, since quests lasting that long were normal for them.
Tauro’s absence had exceeded five months, so his membership was revoked. He paid the fee and registered all over again.
This time, he registered simply as “Tauro,” rather than “Tauro Satou.”
With his father wanted as one of the remaining bandits, Tauro was uncomfortable using the Satou family name.
There was also his future to consider.
For better or worse, the name Tauro Satou had become known among the nobility and even the royal family. It was too heavy a burden for him now.
And so he began again as simply Tauro.
Tauro quietly worked through beginner errand quests.
Today, he was carrying stone for repairs to the city wall.
It was his first real exercise in a long time, and he quickly found himself short of breath.
Yet after his months of torment and convalescence, merely being able to move his body made him happy.
It reminded him how precious freedom was.
An adventurer completing errand quests as a penalty called to him.
“Tauro, are you all right? Don’t push yourself.”
“I’m fine!”
Tauro answered cheerfully.
The adventurer nodded and returned to work.
Later, Tauro made Leo a proposal regarding the royalties from Yasuragi Inn.
“You want us to buy out your rights?”
“Yes. Then you won’t have to keep paying me a share.”
“Are you sure about that?”
“Yes. I’m thinking of moving. I’d like to find a room of my own.”
“So you need a large amount of money at once?”
“Something like that.”
Leo considered the proposal.
“If that’s what you want, we’ll buy them.”
Tauro suggested a low price, but Leo refused to accept it. In the end, Tauro received several times the amount he had proposed.
“And as for the curry shop…”
“No.”
Leo cut him off immediately.
“You built that business from the ground up and supplied the capital yourself. The guild will operate it, but you’re keeping the rights. You can withdraw the proceeds anywhere there’s an Adventurers’ Guild.”
Leo seemed to have guessed what Tauro was planning from the meaningful way he spoke.
“Thank you very much.”
Tauro bowed deeply.
“I told you there was no need for that when we first met here.”
Leo turned his back and waved, telling him to leave.
Tauro bowed once more to Leo’s back, then left the branch chief’s office.
Nei was working at the reception desk.
When she spotted Tauro coming down from the second floor, she winked at him.
“Tauro, did your errand quest go all right?”
“Yes. I got a little out of breath, but it really does feel good to move again.”
“I’m glad you’re feeling better.”
Remembering the past few months, Nei’s eyes filled with tears.
“Please don’t cry.”
Tauro smiled as he spoke.
“Sorry. I’ve been a little too quick to cry lately.”
“Oh, Nei, I’m going to the royal capital again. Could you prepare the paperwork for me to hire one escort?”
“The royal capital? Ah, you’re going to visit everyone there. You said you had only thanked them by letter so far. All right.”
“Thank you very much.”
Tauro bowed deeply.
“Tauro, your head’s far too low!”
Thinking he was joking, Nei laughed and waved for him to straighten up.
On the morning Tauro departed for the royal capital, Leo came to see him off.
“Leo? What brings you here?”
Nei, who had also come to see Tauro off, was surprised to see him.
Mina had been assigned as Tauro’s escort.
“You must be busy. Are you sure you want to escort someone like me?”
“Of course. Traveling to the capital with you is fun.”
Tauro nodded, thinking how painful it would be to tell her after they arrived that this was a one-way journey for him.
“Then I’ll be in your care as my escort. Leo, Nei—thank you for seeing me off. I’m leaving now.”
Once again, Tauro bowed deeply.
He intended it to be a bow that would last a lifetime.
“Tauro, that’s long enough.”
Nei laughed and waved her hand.
Tauro raised his head and committed both of their faces to memory. Silently thanking the city of Saisi for all it had done for him, he set out in search of a new place to call home.
