Chapter 53: Time to Move On
Tauro was released from prison.
The townspeople, adventurers, and guild staff all rejoiced.
But everyone was shocked by how completely he had changed.
Nothing remained of the adorable boy who had been the guild’s mascot. He was emaciated, covered in wounds, and terribly weak.
Nei seemed to remember how Tauro had looked when they first met. Tears welled in her eyes as she embraced him.
“I’m…home…”
At the sound of Tauro’s frail voice, Nei finally collapsed in tears without letting him go.
“Welcome home, Tauro…!”
Those were the only words she managed before she began sobbing uncontrollably.
The Adventurers’ Guild was furious over Viscount Saisi’s brutality. With the Garfish Trading Company also taking action, the Merchants’ Guild publicly condemned him as well.
The mood in Saisi became openly hostile.
The viscount’s reputation fell to the ground, while messages of sympathy for Tauro poured in.
Even so, the man was still their lord.
Outwardly, the people kept their resentment quiet.
For three months, Tauro had lived through hell.
There had been no limit to the violence. If he was struck ten times one day, he would be struck eleven times the next. The abuse only escalated; it never eased.
The guards often withheld his meals, and their harassment of the once-popular boy grew steadily worse.

Tauro had known it was poisoned, but he still had to eat. Without food, he would die.
The poison left him writhing in agony. Just as he reached his limit and considered confessing to a crime he hadn’t committed simply to end the suffering, a voice sounded.
“One activation condition for the special skill [Garbled Text] has been confirmed: <One Who Endured Every Kind of Pain>. You have acquired [Status Ailment Resistance] and [Status Ailment Recovery].”
The Voice of the World had reached him shortly after his second month in prison, and it saved him.
Those abilities helped him keep his spirit strong.
They covered all manner of ailments, including poison, pain, and paralysis.
They didn’t make him completely immune, but compared with the first two months, the difference was like going from hell to heaven.
That was how Tauro survived three months of torment.
Potions and a healer’s magic treated his external wounds.
His internal injuries were another matter.
They required medicine and time.
When the doctor told him he would be confined to bed for a while, Tauro joked, “I’m happy just to be able to sleep in a soft bed.”
That made Nei cry again.
Leo, on the other hand, said, “If you can still joke, you’ll be all right.”
Tauro decided to avoid self-deprecating jokes around Nei for the time being.
On this day, Tauro turned eleven.
His health had finally returned, and his emaciated body was gradually filling out again.
Then the Voice of the World echoed in his mind.

Alone in the guild courtyard, Tauro smiled wryly as he practiced with his sword.
Once he had recovered enough, he returned to adventuring. Yet in all the months between his release and his return, no one from Viscount Saisi’s household came to see him.
There wasn’t so much as a letter.
Leo’s anger didn’t abate. He declared that the branch would refuse all requests from the lord for the foreseeable future.
Tauro was grateful that Leo was angry on his behalf, but he didn’t want the relationship to deteriorate further.
Tauro himself had no intention of forgiving Viscount Saisi, but neither did he want Leo and the others to become consumed by hatred.
“Maybe it’s time for me to move on…”
The idea he had been considering for months returned to his mind, and Tauro sank into thought.
