Chapter 470: The Day of the Operation to Annihilate the Imperial Soldiers

From the morning, Tauro and Aeris held extensive discussions with viscount Musai and his men, and by noon, they were headed to the square that had served as the venue for their experiment the previous day.

They would surely be under surveillance starting from the moment they left the castle. Furthermore, considering they were heading towards the same square again, it was natural that the imperial soldiers would be surprised by their actions.

After all, they wouldn’t expect them to return to the same location so soon.

However, their enemies could also misjudge that Tauro and Aeris’s flight into the sky and out of the city was not because they sensed they were being surrounded and were fleeing

And having learned from Tauro’s flight lessons the previous day, it was likely that they had taken some countermeasures.

This was something we had anticipated as well.

That said, Tauro didn’t plan to repeat the same experiment as the day before, so he wouldn’t be able to fly.

This was partly because he wanted to keep his abilities a secret from his allies, Viscount Musai and the others, but more than anything, it would have been too hard to go through that painful experiment again.

The Intense pain all over his body and heavy bleeding caused by dark spirit magic were more than enough for Tauro.

“So, what should we do until the imperial soldiers try to capture us?” Aeris asked, sitting with Tauro in a corner of the deserted square.

Tauro figured that the imperial soldiers observing them from a distance beyond his “Presence Detection” would indeed send a signal to all their soldiers.

Just like last time, they will likely use light as a signal, so our allies can use that as a signal to close in behind the imperial soldiers.

“Hmm… Should we talk about something casually?──Oh right, once we’re done accompanying the saint’s party, what do you want to do?”

Tauro asked since Aeris hadn’t been able to do much in terms of adventurer activities since her return.

“Well… I know it’s something we need to decide collectively after talking with everyone, but… I still want to explore areas of this country that I don’t know yet. I’d like to see the city where you first started adventuring, Tauro, and it might be nice to visit another country to expand my activities as an adventurer. —When I think about it this way, there are so many things I want to do!”

“That’s true. I understand what you’re saying. Now that I think about it, traveling around the country with Saint Maiden’s party might be a good way to scout for future adventures. Thanks to this, I’ve come to want to visit areas south of the Bariella Duchy as well.”

As the two began to get excited about discussing their future adventures, Aeris sensed something.

“…Tauro. a small barrier has been set up around this area.”

“I thought so… they’re using barrier magic to counter my ‘Levitation.’”

Tauro had expected this.

The only options left would be to shoot them down with potential projectiles or use magic, but that could risk harming Aeris, the target of the whole abduction.

If I were to do it, I’d probably set up a barrier to restrict the range within which I can fly.

Then, with Tauro’s ‘Presence Detection,’ he confirmed the presence of sever people that were not his allies—Ragune, Ankh, Zion, and others—hiding in nearby buildings or ruins.

However, some of those presences disappeared quickly.

“!?—Could it be that they have someone capable of countering my ‘Presence Detection?”

With the awareness gained from yesterday’s awakened state and his ‘True Eye,’ Tauro could tell they were elite members of the Empire’s special forces.

This meant the enemy’s strength might be greater than they had anticipated.

Though Tauro was confident that he will be fine because he has his best partner, Pela, with him, he steeled himself, realizing the enemy could indeed be formidable.

 That was when it happened.

Shadows appeared around the plaza, surrounding Tauro and Aeris.

Some were dressed in a way that would allow them to blend in with the locals, while others are dressed as adventurers.

Around fifty of them approached the deserted square— It was more than I had expected.

Since Tauro’s 『Presence Detection』 was unable to detect more than half of them, it must mean that many possessed ‘Presence Concealment’ skills that surpassed his ability.

“…Who are you?”

Tauro knew the answer, but he decided to ask anyway.

It was merely a way to buy time, and during that time, the soldiers led by viscount Musai would be tightening the encirclement.

Also, with Ragune and the others lying in wait in an abandoned house nearby, they were set to rush in if needed.

“…Kill him.”

A voice from within the encroaching ranks spoke just one word.

Then about ten soldiers who were tightening the encirclement drew their weapons and assumed fighting stances.

No questions asked!

While I had expected this, their thoroughness is remarkable.

Tauro instantly takes out his shield and short sword “Tauro Modified” from his magic storage and equipped them.

“…A quick-witted brat.”

Someone muttered again.

At that moment, the approaching imperial soldier silently attacked Tauro.

Aeris readied her ebony wand, fending off the approaching imperial soldier while quickly casting several spells on Tauro.

“…Subdue the saint. Her magic is troublesome.”

Again, a voice came from someone I didn’t know.

Tauro immediately took up position behind Aeris and imbuing magic into his short sword “Tauro Modified” to slash at the imperial soldier.

The soldier easily dodged Tauro’s attack.

Or so it seemed.

However, the range of the sword in Tauro’s hand expanded as he infused it with magic, creating a blade of light that extended to the reach of a typical sword.

Due to the cutting power of that light blade, two imperial soldiers collapsed, blood splattering everywhere as they fell.

“This guy uses magic swords; be careful!”

One of the soldiers’ facing Tauro warned their comrades.

Tauro immediately stopped pouring magic into it, returning the weapon back to just a simple short sword.

This was to conserve his magic, but also to prevent his enemies from gauging the distance between them by not always revealing the light blade.

With two of their numbers down, two more soldiers at the back stepped forward, their weapons readied.

Their movements were efficient.

The others remained vigilant, paying attention to their surroundings while keeping an eye on Tauro and Aeris.

This truly was a group that had received thorough training…

Though Tauro had been able to take down two with a surprise attack using “Tauro Modified,” he felt it might not be so easy to defeat the next ones.
