Chapter 463: The Sealed Blessing

On the morning of the day the “Blessing Ceremony” conducted by Saint Mathilda in the capital city of Bariella was to be held, a small trouble arose.

When Mathilda tried to lightly use magic to rehearse, her spells were immediately nullified and she found herself unable to cast any.

“Why?! –It’s like something is interfering with my magic, my mana is being canceled out!”

Mathilda furrowed her brows, expressing her dissatisfaction.

The aides from the Kingdom of luwan were taken aback by this.

The “Blessing Ceremony” was set to take place in just a few hours.

If they could not do so, it would disgrace Duke Barriella, and it would also bring shame to the Kingdom of Luwan which boasted the Saint.

With the Saint’s reputation soaring just the day before, this was the last thing they wanted to happen.

Marquis Donaison, the leader of the Kingdom of Luwan, instructed his aides to test whether they could use magic.

“I can use it just fine.”

“I’m okay too.”

“I’m not having any problems either.”

Once the aides confirmed that they could use their magic, they began to wonder among themselves whether Mathilda’s whims were again causing issues.

“… What’s going on here? Saint Mathilda, please try again.”

Marquis Donaison urged Mathilda to cast magic once more.

“Purify! … No, it won’t work. Something is definitely obstructing my ability to cast spells!”

Mathilda’s expression quickly darkened with anxiety.

“Could it be that someone is specifically targeting the Saint and interfering with her alone?” one aide speculated, though it was a wild guess.

“It could be something like a curse or a sealing effect created by a barrier… It’s possible that it could be that.” another aide nodded in agreement.

“In that case, we’ll have to find and capture whoever is getting in our way! But is that possible in just a few hours?”

Marquis Donaison asked his aides.

“We might have to enlist the help of Viscount Musai, who is in charge of this territory’s capital, and the Crown Prince to locate the culprit…”

“…Considering the relationship between the crown prince’s side and Viscount Musai of Duke Bariella’s family, it may be difficult.”

Marquis Donaison remarked, sensing the atmosphere that had developed between the two of them in such a short period of time.

“What do you mean by that?”

One aide asked Marquis Donaison again.

“It’s common knowledge that they aren’t on good terms. There’s a rumor that Marquis Haragura is backing the Crown prince, but as you are aware the Marquis and His Excellency the Prime Minister are in conflict with each other, right?”

He explained.

“…Is that how it is? So that means the one interfering with the Saint must be an agent of the prince’s side who wants to humiliate Duke Bariella with the ‘Blessing’ ceremony in his dukedom…”

The aide hesitated, sensing he might be speaking too candidly.

“And if the Saint is embarrassed, our Kingdom of Luwan, which has her as our protector, will also face disgrace! If we can’t perform the ‘Blessing’ at the last moment, it will definitely cause a rift between us and the Prime Minister, regardless of whether it’s due to our stubbornness or some other trouble…”

“I suppose we just have to confide in Viscount Musai and investigate the cause before the ‘Blessing Ceremony’…”

“…That seems to be our only option. However, keep it a secret from the Crown prince’s side. If they are the root of this problem, word of this getting out gives a chance for countermeasures to be taken. Of course, we can’t assume that the prince’s side is definitely the culprit; it could be the plot of a foreign power as well.”

After discussing this with his aides, Marquis Donaison promptly sent a messenger to Viscount Musai.

Meanwhile, Tauro and the others…

“I’ve been wondering about this for a while now…”

Aeris, who had joined Tauro and the others in their special room, suddenly gazed thoughtfully at the space above her head.

“What is it, Aeris?”

Ragune responded to her friend’s musing.

“There’s a barrier and some sort of curse magic that was not present last night surrounding this mansion,”

“A barrier?”

This time it was Tauro’s turn to react.

“Yes. Originally, there were several barrier spells cast to protect this mansion, but a new barrier and curse, which appear to be harmless at first glance, has been established over them. Usually, something like this wouldn’t be noticed by anyone, but it’s clinging to me and causing a bit of an inconvenience, which is why I caught on to it.”

“A barrier and curse that only you can sense… Can’t you break it?”

Tauro asked.

“Hmmm… It’s hard to tell if it’s the object or the magician that is casting the magic, but it can’t be broken unless we cut off the source. I’m still fine, though it’s unpleasant. Luckily, it’s nothing serious so it won’t cause me any trouble,”

Aeris replied, frowning slightly as she gazed vacantly at the space.

“Well, if that’s the case, then there’s no problem,”

Ankh replied optimistically.

“Actually, I also felt a bit of an odd sensation like Aeris mentioned…”

Zion agreed with what Aeris had said.

“You too, Zion? … What could it be, then? Could it be something that interferes with healing or light magic? I’m not sensing anything myself, though…”

Tauro tilted his head in confusion.

“…It definitely feels very limited in its scope. Given this sensation, it wouldn’t be surprising if the ‘Saint’ noticed it as well… wait? Could this be what it’s about?”

Tauro seemed to understand what Aeris meant, and the two exchanged glances and nodded.

“What’s the matter, leader?”

Ankh asked for clarification.

“The barrier and curse Aeris noticed may be targeting the Saint specifically,”

“““Ah!”””

Ragune, Ankh, and Zion all nodded in understanding.

“Then it’s possible that there’s a huge commotion around the Saint, who might be under attack right now,”

Ragune speculated.

“I think it’s more accurate to say it’s a limited magic seal rather than an attack. It’s likely set by someone who wants to disrupt the ‘Blessing Ceremony.’ I could probably ignore a barrier of this level and still use my ‘Blessing,’ but for that novice ‘Saint,’ it might be difficult,” Aeris said after giving it some thought.

“For now, we need to report this to Viscount Musai. It would be a serious problem if he’s unaware,”

Once Tauro had made that decision, he called the maid and asked her to deliver a message to Viscount Musai.
