Chapter 445: Difficult to Handle

Tauro caught up with the Saint and tried to stop her.

“Excuse me, but what do you intend to do now?”

It was an entirely reasonable question.

Surely that will make her stop.

“Sightseeing, of course. This country is larger than the Kingdom of Luwan, is it not? I heard it has many things we don’t have there. I agreed to the king’s request and came here because I wanted to see them.”

The Saint continued striding away from the palace without slowing at all.

Tauro had failed to stop her, but he had learned something valuable. She appeared to be acting independently of Luwan’s immediate plans.

Perhaps she understood that the kingdom was using her and had simply decided to exploit her value as a Saint for her own purposes.

“Now that I know you’re the Saint, I have no choice but to ensure your safety. If anything happens to you, my head may literally roll. Could you come with me while I rejoin my companions?”

Tauro could no longer take risks. An incident involving the Saint could become a dispute between nations, so he desperately searched for a reason that would persuade her to accept protection.

“Companions? Who are you, anyway? Begin by giving me your name.”

The Saint remained haughty from beginning to end.

Tauro wanted to avoid introducing himself and becoming memorable, but escape now seemed impossible. Within several days, Prince Fleue would probably recommend him as one of her attendants regardless.

He could only resign himself to the situation.

“Tauro. Tauro Graunewald. I turned fourteen today.”

“Fourteen? You’re unusually composed for your age. I’ll overlook your earlier rudeness in failing to introduce yourself. I’m Matilda, the Saint who’s the pride of the Kingdom of Luwan! Tomorrow, this country’s Prime Minister will appraise me, and then I shall become the most famous person in the world. You should earn my favor while you still can.”

Matilda clearly understood her own value. Her abilities might indeed be extraordinary.

Her behavior, however, was far too reckless.

“Lady Matilda, may I take you to my companions now?”

“What sort of people are they? You aren’t planning to kidnap me, are you?”

“Rejoining them is meant to prevent that possibility. I’m an adventurer, and my companions are adventurers as well.”

“Very well. Take me to them. But remember—if you attempt anything wicked, divine lightning will fall upon you for offending the Saint!”

Matilda raised the small magic wand hanging at her waist in warning.

“That’s exactly what I’m trying to avoid.”

Relieved that she had agreed, Tauro led her to the Graunewald residence in the Royal Capital.

“Wait. Who exactly are you? You call yourself an adventurer, yet you live in a mansion this large.”

Matilda stopped when Tauro tried to enter as though it were perfectly natural.

“This is my home in the Royal Capital.”

He avoided further explanation and guided her inside.

“Welcome back, Lord Tauro! Who’s your guest?”

Zion came to greet him, apparently having waited for his return.

“She is… an acquaintance, and perhaps a rather important person. Are Ragune and Ankh here?”

“Yes. Everyone has returned.”

Zion ran to call them.

“You’re a noble, are you not?” Matilda asked.

“Strictly speaking, I’m one of a nobleman’s sons.”

“That much is obvious from your clothes and your access to the palace. Who was that girl?”

“She’s one of my companions. Ah, here they come.”

Zion returned with Ragune and Ankh.

“Leader, did something happen?” Ankh asked. He noticed Matilda and added, “Who’s that woman?”

“This is Matilda, the Saint everyone in the Royal Capital is discussing.”

“A Saint?” Ragune examined her without the slightest surprise. “From what I can see, she’s still at the level of an unhatched egg. With proper training, she may develop considerably.”

“So she’s a Saint,” Ankh said. “After seeing the one at Aeris’s residence, this girl doesn’t look particularly impressive.”

“It’s rather cruel to compare her with that person,” Zion said in Matilda’s defense, though the remark hardly helped.

Matilda stared at them in disbelief. It was apparently the first time anyone had reacted to her fame with complete indifference.

“D-Do you understand who I am? I’m the Saint who will soon become the most famous person in the world!”

“Is that true?” Ragune and Ankh asked Tauro in unison.

Zion also looked unconvinced.

“That’s how the public sees her. More importantly, Ragune, I’d like Aeris to meet her. Could you bring Aeris here?”

“Aeris? Understood. Let’s move to another room.”

Ragune evidently didn’t want to open [Dimensional Corridor] in front of Matilda.

“Lady Matilda, please wait here for a moment,” Tauro said.

“What? Where are you going without me?”

“We’re only bringing another companion. We’ll return shortly.”

After reassuring her again, Tauro left for another room with Ragune.

“Lady Matilda, are you strong?” Zion asked, perhaps to fill the silence—or perhaps from genuine curiosity.

“Strong? I’m the Saint. Strength is far too small a measure for someone like me. The great figures of the world will kneel before me and beg for my Blessing.”

Matilda delivered the declaration with immense pride.

“I understand now,” Ankh muttered. “Tauro went to fetch Aeris because he had no idea how to handle her.”

He had finally realized that Tauro considered a marquis’s daughter the best person to deal with someone like Matilda.
