Chapter 413: Easy Job

Tauro realized that this quest would be quite difficult for an ordinary adventurer.

The reason was that it required [Magic Storage] (Medium) or above.

Judging by the quantity piled inside the warehouse, even if magic tools with storage functions were permitted, transporting everything to the surrounding towns and villages would normally require many trips.

The previous contractor had probably been an adventurer who specialized in this kind of quest.

Even completing the delivery circuit itself seemed demanding.

“We’ll take everything scheduled for shipment over the next few days while we’re here.”

Tauro said, storing all the produce crammed into the warehouse at once.

The village chief was so astonished that he sank to the ground.

“G-Good heavens…! You have [Magic Storage] (Large)! The previous adventurer had [Magic Storage] (Medium), but even that was so rare and useful that we kept him under an exclusive contract for years. Would your party consider signing one with us?”

The village chief offered the party a contract before he had even seen how they handled the work.

Just then, a man who appeared to be the village chief’s son arrived.

“Dad, are these the new adventurers? Wait… The warehouse is empty! Do two of them have [Magic Storage] (Medium) or above?”

The son apparently found it more plausible that two people possessed [Magic Storage] (Medium) than that one person had [Magic Storage] (Large).

“…No. This young adventurer apparently has [Magic Storage] (Large).”

“R-Really?! Would your party please sign an exclusive contract with us?”

He immediately made the same offer. In that respect, they truly were father and son.

“Now, now, let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Why don’t you wait and see how we handle the work first?”

Somehow, Tauro—the one being hired—ended up having to calm them down.

“But I’ve been searching for someone with [Magic Storage] (Large) for years, and I’ve never found one! This must be divine providence. How could I possibly let this chance to secure a contract slip away?”

The village chief rose and clasped Tauro’s hand.

“We can even provide you with a house in the village. Yes, you could marry whichever village girl you prefer and settle here! What do you say? Why not retire from adventuring and work exclusively for us?”

The village chief’s eyes were completely serious.

His son, standing behind him, looked equally earnest.

The pressure from the two of them was intense, but Tauro declined.

“We already have plans of our own, so I’m afraid we must decline the exclusive contract.”

Tauro was bewildered by this strange turn of events. He had been forced to refuse an offer before the job had even begun.

“I see… That’s unfortunate. Well, please give it some thought while you work. Son, the customers in the surrounding towns and villages are waiting. Set out as soon as you can.”

“O-Oh! Right, of course. Everyone, please get into the wagon. We’ll stop at a nearby village first and deliver some of the overdue shipments as quickly as possible.”

The son ushered Tauro and the others into the prepared wagon, climbed into the driver’s seat, and set off.

“This is moving awfully fast.”

 Ankh muttered in exasperation.

“I’m sorry. A labor shortage has delayed our shipments recently, inconveniencing several settlements. We send out large quantities of agricultural produce, but we also transport goods arriving from other towns and villages. If we stop moving, distribution throughout the region grinds to a halt.”

The village chief’s son heard Ankh’s complaint from the driver’s seat and apologized.

“I see. Anyone with [Magic Storage] (Medium) would naturally be in high demand.”

Tauro now understood the village’s predicament.

“[Magic Storage] also keeps produce fresh during transport, which makes it exceptionally useful.”

The village chief’s son urged the horse onward as he explained the situation to Tauro and the others behind him.

“I understand completely. [Magic Storage] is very useful to me as well—it lets me eat freshly made pork cutlets whenever I please.”

 Ragune nodded sympathetically.

“You can use [Magic Storage] too, miss? That’s incredible! Would you reconsider signing an exclusive contract with us?”

Forgetting that he was driving, the village chief’s son turned around and renewed his appeal.

“Please watch the road! That’s dangerous!”

Tauro warned him with a strained laugh.

“Once this quest is over, I’ll have a proposal for you. I hope you’ll give it serious consideration.”

 Tauro spoke with deliberate significance.

“A proposal? Do you have a better idea?”

“Something like that. For now, let’s concentrate on the work and make up for the delays.”

With that reply, Tauro left the village chief’s son to focus on driving.

Late that afternoon, they arrived at a fairly large nearby village.

“Oh, isn’t that Garde from Marfa Village? I thought this delivery was going to be late.”

As the wagon entered the village, the residents called out to Garde, the village chief’s son.

“Yes, but we found a new [Magic Storage] user. We’re hoping to complete the entire circuit in one go, so we arrived early.”

“That’s wonderful news! Then please bring the usual quantities of our regular goods to the village chief’s house.”

“Understood. We’ll be staying here tonight, so please reserve rooms for us at the inn.”

Garde exchanged familiar business greetings with the residents.

When they reached the village chief’s house, Tauro followed Garde’s instructions and unloaded a large quantity of agricultural produce from [Magic Storage].

“…Everything is here, just as usual. Thank you for your hard work. By the way, Garde, could you arrange to have our village’s eggs processed elsewhere again?”

The village chief immediately began discussing the next transaction with Garde.

“The usual arrangement? Certainly. The price will be the same as before—is that acceptable?”

“Yes. Thank you very much.”

 That concluded the negotiation.

After Garde received payment for the delivered produce, Tauro stored the money in [Magic Storage] as well.

This appeared to be the central task of the quest.

Tauro and his companions were responsible for guarding the wagon and its driver, Garde—the village chief’s son—while also managing the transportation of goods and money.
