Chapter 412: The Territorial-Capital Quest

Tauro and his companions spent several peaceful days in the territorial capital. They completed a number of requests through the Adventurers’ Guild and quickly earned a favorable reputation.

“Are there any requests that would take us to villages around the territorial capital?” Tauro asked a receptionist.

The Graunewald branch was particularly large, and its request board held far more notices than most guilds.

However, Tauro, Ragune, and Zion still knew little about the surrounding area. Rather than search blindly through the crowded board, Tauro decided to ask directly.

“The surrounding villages?” the receptionist repeated. “That’s unusual. Most adventurers newly arrived at the Graunewald branch insist that they want work inside the city.”

 She thought for a moment.

“There’s one request from a large village near the capital. The completion reward is rather low, though.”

Because the newcomers had made an unusual request, she offered them a job that other adventurers had repeatedly ignored.

 The faded notice read:

Transportation and protection of agricultural produce and other goods. Applicants must possess [Magic Storage] or a magic tool with equivalent storage. Recommended for D- to E-rank adventurers. The work requires an extended circuit through surrounding villages to sell and exchange products.

“This may accept D-rank adventurers, but the actual difficulty and reward appear intended for the lower D- and E-rank bands,” Tauro said, narrowing his eyes at the worn paper.

Every member of Black-Gold Wings was D-plus. The team was approaching the C-rank band, and Tauro wondered whether accepting such poorly paid work might seem inappropriate.

“I’m afraid that’s correct,” the receptionist admitted. “The team that previously handled this route retired. Current adventurers refuse to accept it.”

“The client has worked with the guild for many years. Even though the reward is low, we don’t want to abandon a valued customer.”

She clasped her hands in a pleading gesture.

“Please consider it.”

“What does everyone think?” Tauro asked.

“We should take it,” Ankh replied. “It fits our purpose perfectly.”

“I agree,” Ragune said. “The work itself should be easy, and it’ll allow us to visit several villages around the capital.”

“If Tauro-sama approves, then I approve as well,” Zion said.

 Her answer was entirely predictable.

“Then we’ll accept the request.”

Tauro asked the receptionist to complete the formalities.

She urged them to leave immediately.

The client was already making a scheduled circuit through neighboring communities. Fresh produce was the village’s main selling point, so the goods needed to be placed in [Magic Storage] as quickly as possible to preserve them.

After hearing the explanation, Tauro first stopped at Magic Tool Street to complete a personal errand. The party then traveled toward the client’s village.

The settlement lay on the outskirts of the territorial capital, surrounded by broad fields and a peaceful rural landscape.

“This is a large village,” Ragune said, admiring the numerous windmills. “The scenery is beautiful.”

“I believe this village built its prosperity by shipping crops throughout the region,” Ankh said, searching his memory.

“I’ve never seen windmills this large,” Zion said excitedly.

“The fields are enormous,” Tauro observed. “Still, it’s unusual to ship food away from the densely populated capital. I thought most villages were largely self-sufficient.”

“Normally they’re,” Ankh explained. “But this place produces so much that it’s called the territorial capital’s food storehouse.”

“Large-scale cultivation lowers the production cost, allowing the village to sell cheaply. Other settlements can’t grow every crop they need, and they’ll naturally buy food that’s both inexpensive and good.”

“I understand. Our task is to distribute that surplus throughout the surrounding communities.”

Their conversation continued as they climbed a small hill toward the village chief’s home.

The house stood beside several large warehouses. It was substantial but simple, without extravagant decoration.

An elderly man emerged as the party approached.

“Are you the adventurers who accepted our request?”

“Yes. We’re the D-plus adventuring team Black-Gold Wings. Are you the village chief?”

Despite his age, the man walked firmly and possessed energetic eyes.

“Indeed. Thank you for coming. I’d like you to accompany my son on the distribution circuit immediately. Will that be possible?”

“Immediately?”

It was already past noon, and even Tauro was surprised by the chief’s impatience.

“Your [Magic Storage] is at least Medium capacity, correct? That will be an enormous help.”

“Everyone in the village is occupied with farm work, and we don’t have enough people to manage the shipments. Sending several wagons is expensive, so an adventurer with [Magic Storage] greatly reduces the burden.”

The chief led them to one of the neighboring warehouses.

When he opened the doors, Tauro and his companions found the building packed from wall to wall with sacks of agricultural produce.

“Please store everything in this warehouse first. These goods were supposed to leave for other villages and towns yesterday.”

“Deliver this delayed shipment, then return for the next load.”

The chief spoke with visible relief.

“That’s an extraordinary amount of food,” Ankh said for the entire party.

“This request is much larger in scale than I expected,” Tauro agreed.
